Indian-origin lawyer Mathura Sridharan has been appointed as Ohio's 12th Solicitor General, a role that makes her the state's top appellate lawyer. She will now represent the midwestern state in some of its most important legal battles, including cases before the US Supreme Court and other high-level state and federal courts.
Her appointment was announced by Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost last week, who had nothing but praise for Sridharan's sharp legal mind and track record in court.

'Mathura is brilliant… she won her argument at SCOTUS last year. Both the SGs she worked under (Flowers & Gaiser) recommended her. I told her when I originally hired her I needed her to argue with me. She does… All the time! Excited to promote her. She will serve Ohio well,' Yost wrote on X.
But instead of just celebrating the achievement, Sridharan found herself the target of racist and xenophobic trolling online.
The hate centred on her Indian heritage, with many questioning why someone with a non-Western name and background should hold such a senior legal post. Some even mocked her for wearing a bindi in her official photo.
Thankfully, the backlash didn't go unanswered. The Ohio AG quickly came to her defence, calling out the trolls and reaffirming her qualifications and right to represent the state.
So who is Mathura Sridharan? Why did her appointment trigger such reactions? And how did the Attorney General respond?
Here's a closer look.
Who is Mathura Sridharan?
Mathura Sridharan currently serves as Deputy Solicitor General of Ohio, and also heads the state's Tenth Amendment Center, a division focused on defending state authority and pushing back against what it sees as unlawful federal overreach.
According to The Federalist Society, a conservative and libertarian legal group with which Sridharan is affiliated, she has led lawsuits aimed at protecting Ohioans from federal policies that allegedly violate the Constitution and disturb the balance of power between state and federal governments. Her academic credentials are as impressive as her legal work. Sridharan holds a Juris Doctor from the New York University School of Law, along with multiple degrees from MIT, including a Master's in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, and Bachelor's degrees in both Economics and Electrical Engineering & Computer Science.
Before joining the Solicitor General's office, she clerked for two prominent federal judges: Judge Steven J Menashi of the US Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, and Judge Deborah A. Batts of the US District Court for the Southern District of New York.
Outside of her legal work, Sridharan is trained in Carnatic music, a classical form of music from South India, and has even performed during Chennai's December music season.
She has been married to Ashwin Suresh since 2015.
Why is Mathura Sridharan being trolled?
Soon after the news of her appointment went public, Sridharan found herself at the centre of a wave of online trolling.
A number of social media users took issue with her wearing a bindi in her official photo. 'What is that on her forehead?' one user on X asked. While another wrote, 'She's got a permanent dot, huh?'

Some even mocked her name and even questioned her identity as an American.
Why would you select someone who isn't an American for such an important role? — ThatGuyFromHS (@ThatGuyFromHS) July 31, 2025
'She's Indian. They all have a loyalty first to other Indians. Horrible pick. Totally un-American. The GOP is pathetic.' And a third comment read, 'No one with the last name 'Sridharan' fought in the US Civil War. She's not an American.'
That is not all. Some even trolled her for her religious beliefs.
'Is she a Christian? That's the biggest factor that concerns me. Based on the bindi on her forehead, I worry she is not. That absolutely should matter to us when choosing our leaders. The beginning of wisdom is the fear of the Lord. If someone worships demons, then they are by nature children of wrath and foolish. How can they effectively lead us?' one user wrote.

'The problem is not with her…': Ohio AG responds to the trolling
Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost didn't stay silent. In a pointed response, he directly defended Sridharan's appointment and said that she is being wrongly portrayed as a non-American.
He added that if Sridharan's complexion or her name is bothering someone, the problem is with them and not her.
A few commenters have asserted incorrectly that Mathura is not American.
She is a United States citizen, married to a US citizen, and the child of naturalized US citizens.

Why is Trump not imposing extra tariffs on China just like India for importing Russian oil? Is he scared? VP Vance admits...

New Delhi: US President Donald Trump imposed 25 percent tariff on India for buying Russian oil. On being asked why he isn't imposing same tariff on China for buying Russian oil, there is no straight answer. Meanwhile, US Vice President JD Vance has admitted that imposing tariffs on China is a very difficult decision. JD Vance has said that after imposing a huge tariff hike on Russian oil imports from India, US President Donald Trump is now considering similar measures against China. But he stressed that deciding to impose tariffs against China would be much more difficult and politically sensitive. Why did Trump not impose tariff on China for importing Russian oil? It is clear from the statement of Vice President JD Vance that Donald Trump is afraid of China's retaliation. In fact, when Trump imposed tariffs on China for the first time, China immediately retaliated and reduced the supply of those rare minerals to America, which are most needed by America's defense industry. The current situation is that American defense companies are struggling to make weapons, and many companies have been forced to extend the delivery date of weapons by two to three months. What did VP Vance say on the issue? That is why JD Vance has admitted that 'the relations between the two countries also affect many other issues.' That is, America is looking after its own interests and is avoiding imposing tariffs on China due to fear. Speaking on Fox News' Sunday Morning Futures, Vice President JD Vance said, 'imposing tariffs on China is being considered, but no decision has been taken yet.' Vance said, 'The President (Donald Trump) has said that he is thinking about it, but he has not taken any concrete decision. The China issue is a little more complicated because our relationship affects many other things that have nothing to do with the Russian situation.' How much oil did China purchase from Russia in July? China's imports of Russian crude oil crossed $ 10 billion in July, the highest monthly level since March. However, the figures so far in 2025 are 7.7% lower than in 2024. Vance said that the President is 'reviewing his options' and 'a decision will be taken at the right time.' At the same time, senior advisor Peter Navarro warned that such tariffs 'can also harm America.' This statement of JD Vance comes after the recent 25 percent additional tariff imposed by the US against India. Due to which the total tariff rate on Indian goods has increased to 50%. This additional duty will come into effect from August 27.

Mayawati for serious talk in Assembly, Parl

1 2 Lucknow: On the first day of the monsoon session of the UP legislative assembly on Monday, BSP president Mayawati, said, "It should not be just a formality despite being brief, but it is important to make it useful for the state and the public, for which both the govt and the opposition will have to move forward by abandoning their political interests, hatred and bitterness. " She further stated that the monsoon session of Parliament, which is ongoing, is also not functioning in a completely peaceful manner, due to which it is not operating properly and as per the expectations of the people. "Concern among the people is natural because of this, as the burning issues of the public and the country are not being discussed with full seriousness," said Mayawati. The discussion on the possibility of a negative effect on the country's economy and development due to the heavy US tariff on Indian trade is being widely debated everywhere, she said, adding that it needs to be properly discussed, especially in Parliament, because it is related to the national interest and the country's 'good days'. "It cannot be taken lightly, and the country's future cannot be put at stake. Both the govt and the opposition should pay proper and appropriate attention to this," she added. Additionally, whatever doubts are being raised in the country regarding voters, voter lists and their revision, EVMs, etc, which are related to the country, public interest and democracy, should be resolved as soon as possible, she said. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Taking to X, CM Revanth posted: "As Rahul Gandhi begins the fight for democracy and the restoration of the sacrosanct power of every Indian's vote… the BJP has resorted to a dastardly act by detaining him, Priyanka Gandhi, and other Congress leaders. Jails cannot crush resolve or silence the voice of Rahul Gandhi. #VoteKiChori." Mahesh Kumar Goud said that the detention of Rahul Gandhi by Delhi Police is not an act of law, but an exposure of the BJP's fear. "Rahul Gandhi has fearlessly exposed the ECI's collusion with the BJP and unmasked the 'Vote Chori' that is shaking the very foundations of democracy. His fight is not for politics, but for the Constitution and the sacred right of 'One Person, One Vote'." The TPCC chief added that every Congress worker, from the grassroots to the top leadership, stands shoulder to shoulder with Rahul Gandhi. "His voice is our voice, his fight is our fight and no detention can break this resolve. The BJP may attempt to silence him, but they will only amplify the nation's call for truth," Mahesh Goud
