on Sunday suspended five personnel, including two sub-inspectors (SIs), following reports of an alleged torture of a 28-year-old man at the Bordumsa police station in Tinsukia.

Besides SIs Jayanta Kalita and Rajib Deka, three constables from the Assam Police commando battalion — Bishal Jyoti Basudev Boro, Bhaiti Das and Rajib Deka — have been suspended, following direct orders from the director general of police (DGP) Harmeet Singh.
The incident occurred on Friday, when the alleged victim, Sanjit Moran, was standing in a queue to cast his vote during the panchayat polls. Moran, a resident of No.
1 Mohong Village, got involved in a verbal altercation with the police personnel at the voting booth and was summoned to the Bordumsa police station on Saturday afternoon.
According to Moran, the cops subjected him to a brutal assault, beating him mercilessly, before rubbing his body with 'Bhoot Jolokia' (ghost pepper). "I was called to the police station and beaten without any justification. They even applied 'Bhoot Jolokia' on my body, causing unbearable pain," a visibly traumatised Moran said at the Margherita Civil Hospital, where he is undergoing treatment.
As news of the alleged torture spread on Sunday morning, hundreds of angry locals staged a massive protest outside the police station, demanding justice. They raised slogans against police high-handedness, forcing higher authorities to take immediate action.
Tinsukia superintendent of police (SP) Abhijit Gurav issued the suspension order for the two SIs on Sunday afternoon, while Ananda Tokbi, commandant of the 6th commando battalion at Sadiya, suspended the three constables.

Interestingly, Bordumsa police station officer-in-charge (OC), Biswajit Saharia, has been asked to report immediately to Tinsukia police headquarters. The DGP has also directed Gurav to complete the inquiry within 48 hours.
A high-level inquiry has been initiated to investigate the matter thoroughly. "The department has zero tolerance for such misconduct. If the allegations are proven true in the inquiry, further legal action will be taken against all the involved personnel," Gurav said.

Lok Adalat refunds Rs 53 crore to 6,000 cybercrime victims in Telangana
HYDERABAD: The National Lok Adalat refunded Rs 53.5 crore to 6,848 victims of cybercrime cases on Saturday. A total of 1,93,439 compoundable cases, including cybercrime cases, were disposed of in the Lok Adalat. Telangana Director General of Police (DGP) Dr Jitender said that all police units in Telangana performed exceptionally well in disposing of 1,93,439 compoundable cases in the current National Lok Adalat held on Saturday, compared to the 1,83,182 compoundable cases disposed of in the previous National Lok Adalat held on March 8, 2025. The DGP said the top five units that performed exceptionally well in the disposal of cases during the National Lok Adalat were Hyderabad Commissionerate with 32,171 cases, Rachakonda with 21,397 cases, Nalgonda district police with 16,496 cases, Warangal Commissionerate with 13,651 cases, and Ramagundam Commissionerate with 13,316 cases. The cumulative refunds facilitated since February 2024 now stand at Rs 281.1 crore, benefitting 30,478 cybercrime victims across Telangana.

Five arrested in Assam's Goalpara for allegedly throwing beef near temple, says CM
The Assam Police have arrested five persons for allegedly throwing beef near a temple in Goalpara in a 'deliberate attempt to incite communal tension', Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Sunday. In a post on X, the Bharatiya Janata Party leader said that Bodir Ali, Hazarat Ali, Tara Mia, Shajamal Mia and Jahangir Alom, all residents of Lakhipur, were arrested for attempting to incite tensions after the Muslim festival of Eid-ul-Zuha. 'A case has been registered and strict action is being taken to ensure all such elements face the full force of the law,' Sarma said. This comes after at least 60 persons were arrested over the course of a week in connection with communal tensions that broke out in Dhubri on June 8. The tensions had erupted after the remains of an animal were discovered near a temple. On June 13, the state government issued nighttime shoot-at-sight orders in Dhubri to bring the situation under control. Sarma had claimed that the animal remains found near the temple on June 8 were part of the head of a cow. The chief minister claimed that the next day, another severed animal head was found in front of the temple premises, which sparked violence. Widespread protests had broken out in Dhubri on June 8 morning, with a large number of residents blocking a road adjacent to the temple. They shouted slogans and burnt tyres as part of their demonstration. Deputy Commissioner Dibakar Nath issued orders prohibiting five or more persons from gathering in Dhubri town. The administration had also banned rallies, processions, meetings and demonstrations. The situation was brought under control by June 10 and the prohibitory orders were withdrawn. On Friday, the chief minister had also claimed that a day before Bakri Eid, which was celebrated on June 7, a poster showing Dhubri to be part of Bangladesh was found in the town. Sarma alleged that a group was attempting to spread tensions in the area.

Non-servitors banned from climbing chariots
Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government will take stringent legal action, including arrests, against any non-servitor found climbing the chariots during this year's Rath Yatra in Puri, Law Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan said on Sunday. He also asserted that use of mobile phones on the chariots will be strictly prohibited. Speaking to reporters, Harichandan said, 'No non-servitor will be allowed to climb the chariots. If any such person is found on the chariot, strong action, including arrest, will be taken. Also, servitors will not be allowed to carry mobile phones onto the chariots.' To ensure the timely completion of rituals and maintain discipline during the 'Pahandi Bije' (the ceremonial procession) of the deities, the government has requested a list of servitors designated to perform rituals on Rath Yatra day (June 27). 'The final list will be enforced strictly,' the Minister said. Meanwhile, DGP Yogesh Bahadur Khurania held a meeting here to review the security measures for the Rath Yatra. The road connecting Uttara Square near Bhubaneswar to Puri will be under CCTV surveillance, and efforts are underway to instal CCTV cameras along the Puri-Konark road as well, the DGP said. For the first time, an integrated command and control centre will be set up at the Puri Town Police Station to monitor crowd movement and traffic. 'AI-enabled CCTV cameras are being installed at key locations in Puri for real-time monitoring,' he said. Traffic advisories will be issued from the control room to guide pilgrims and visitors, he added. Besides, a mobile app has been developed through which people will get information about the route through which they will have the convenience to visit Puri during the festival and park their vehicles, he informed. Along with police personnel, rapid action force, Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) and specialised agencies will be deployed in Puri for the festival, he said, adding, 'We have requested the authorities concerned for deployment of Central forces.' Drones and an anti-drone system will also be deployed in Puri during the Yatra, he added. Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja visited Puri on Sunday and took stock of the construction of chariots. 'Chariot construction is progressing as per schedule, and I am confident that it will be completed on time,' he toldreporters.
