Engineer loses over RM100,000 to phone scam

The Star08-08-2025
CHUKAI: An engineer lost RM114,000 after falling victim to a phone scam syndicate that impersonated the Bukit Aman Anti-Money Laundering (AMLA) Criminal Investigation team.
Kemaman police chief Supt Mohd Razi Rosli said the incident occurred on Tuesday (Aug 5), when the 31-year-old victim received a phone call from a person claiming he was being investigated for involvement in an account fraud syndicate.
He said the suspect had instructed the victim to make several payments to avoid arrest and to clear his name from the alleged investigation.
"Panicked and fearing legal repercussions, the victim made five transactions amounting to RM114,000 to four different bank accounts in two days, as directed by the suspect," he said in a statement on Friday.
The victim only realised he had been deceived when he was no longer able to contact the individual. The case is now being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.
Mohd Razi also advised the public to verify suspicious phone numbers and bank accounts using the Semak Mule application before taking any action.
He added that individuals can contact the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC) at 997 to confirm the legitimacy of any request involving third-party money transfers. - Bernama

Site supervisor charged with transferring RM2mil in proceeds from unlawful activities

SEREMBAN: A site supervisor has pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court here on Monday (Aug 18) to transferring RM2mil in proceeds from unlawful activities into his bank account about two years ago. Law Tuan Hai, 62, made the plea before judge Mohamad Kamil Nizam. He was charged with receiving proceeds from unlawful activities, amounting to RM2mil, from a law firm's current account by deceiving a 54-year-old man into transferring the money to his current account. The money was transferred after he allegedly deceived the man into believing that he wanted to sell a property lot in Mukim Tebong, Tampin, when he was not the legal owner of the property. The offence, under paragraph 4(1)(b) of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001, was allegedly committed at a bank branch in Bahau between Oct 27 to 31, 2023. Law faced imprisonment of up to 15 years and a fine of not less than five times the amount or value of the proceeds of the illegal activity or RM5mil, whichever is higher, if found guilty. He was allowed bail of RM30,000 with one surety and also ordered to report to the police station every month, surrender his passport to the court and not interfere with witnesses. Judge Mohamad Kamil also ordered the case to be transferred to the Melaka Sessions Court to be heard with another case facing Law, which was for cheating and involved the same amount. The court set Sept 2 for the case mention at the Melaka Sessions Court. - Bernama

Engaged couple among those caught for alleged khalwat in Johor

BATU PAHAT: A couple planning to tie the knot at the end of the year was among three pairs detained by Johor Islamic Religious Department (JAINJ) enforcement officers for alleged khalwat in separate operations here. The couple, both in their 30s, was caught in a Yong Peng hotel room during a midnight raid last night. "Upon questioning, they admitted they were engaged and due to marry soon. However, they were found together in a room without a lawful bond," JAINJ said in a statement today. In the same hotel, officers also detained a man and woman, both in their 20s, who admitted they were in a relationship and had plans to get engaged soon. Both couples were detained for investigations under Section 27 of the Syariah Criminal Offences Enactment 1997, which carries a fine of up to RM3,000 or two years' imprisonment. In another case, a female student, in her 20s, was caught with her boyfriend at her rented home in Batu Pahat yesterday afternoon. The enforcement team moved in about 3.30pm following a tip-off about a man frequenting the house, which is shared by four female students. "During the raid, the woman was home alone as her housemates were away. She is believed to have invited her boyfriend over. During the raid, the woman was clad in shorts and a T-shirt, while the man was wearing a matching T-shirt and a sarong. They told the enforcement team that they were discussing studies. All three cases are under investigation, with charges expected to follow.
