Cops nab lorry driver who nearly ran over policeman on duty
Seberang Perai Selatan (SPS) police chief Supt Jay January Siowou said a police team from the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division of the SPS district police headquarters was conducting Ops Bersepadu and Ops Samseng Jalanan in the Jawi Toll Plaza area, here at 11.30pm Saturday, when they spotted two tipper lorries in a suspicious condition.
"When ordered to stop, the two vehicles refused to cooperate before continuing to speed towards Jalan Besar Nibong Tebal.
"One of the lorries ran a red light at Bukit Panchor and almost hit a police officer on duty. The driver even drove dangerously towards Jalan Transkrian before being arrested with the help of a patrol car (MPV) and the police Motorcycle Patrol Unit at Jalan Sungai Duan, Kampung Ladang Kalidonia," he said in a statement Sunday (Aug 17) night.
He said initial investigations found that the lorry driver, a local man, did not possess a valid driving licence and a Goods Vehicle Licence (GDL), while the lorry's road tax had expired.
Supt Jay said the tipper lorry was seized and the case was being investigated under Section 186 of the Penal Code for obstructing a civil servant from performing duties and Section 279 of the same law and Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act for dangerous and reckless driving. - Bernama

KOTA KINABALU: The legal team representing the family of Zara Qairina Mahathir has welcomed the Attorney-General's Chambers (A-GC) decision to charge several suspects in connection with her alleged bullying case. The team, led by Hamid Ismail, said the decision aligns with recommendations they submitted to the A-GC on Aug 14. "Our proposal at the time was based on disclosures by the Director of Bukit Aman's Criminal Investigation Department, which revealed evidence pointing to bullying prior to the incident involving Zara Qairina. "Therefore, prosecution must be carried out against those named in the evidence under Section 507D(2) of the Penal Code," the lawyers said in a joint statement today. The legal team also includes Shalhan Jufri, Rizwanaden M Borhan, Mohd Luqman Syazwan Zabidi, Mohd Syarulrizam Mohd Salleh, and Farrah Nasser. However, the lawyers noted that they have yet to be informed of the identities of those who will be charged in court. Earlier, the Attorney-General Tan Sri Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar, when contacted, confirmed that five teenage girls would be charged in connection with Zara Qairina's death. Dusuki said the five would be charged at the Kota Kinabalu Juvenile Court on Wednesday. The A-GC said the decision was b ased on police investigation papers.

Six men remanded over armed assault outside nightclub
KUALA LUMPUR: Police have remanded six men for four days after a 29-year-old man was assaulted by a group of armed individuals outside a nightclub in the city. Brickfields police chief Assistant Commissioner Ku Mashariman Ku Mahmood said the suspects, aged between 25 and 29, were arrested following a report lodged at 9.33am yesterday. A 28-second video of the incident has since gone viral, showing the victim being attacked and sustaining injuries to his back. "The case is being investigated under Section 148 of the Penal Code for possessing weapons during a riot, and Section 326 for voluntarily causing grievous hurt," he said in a statement today. He added that police obtained a four-day remand order for all suspects under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code, until Thursday.

Six men arrested over armed riot at KL nightclub
KUALA LUMPUR: Police have arrested six men suspected of being involved in an armed riot at a nightclub in the capital on Sunday (Aug 17), which left another man injured. Brickfields OCPD Asst Comm Ku Mashariman Ku Mahmood said the arrests followed a police report lodged by a 29-year-old man at 9.33am on Saturday. The victim claimed he was assaulted by a group of unidentified men while leaving the nightclub, sustaining injuries to his back. "Acting on the information, six suspects aged 25 to 29 were arrested. All are remanded for four days until Aug 21," he said in a statement on Sunday (Aug 18), adding that the case was being investigated under Sections 148 and 326 of the Penal Code.
