Prime Day uptake fuels Amazon Indias festive sales hopes

Prime Day uptake fuels Amazon Indias festive sales hopes

News18a day ago
New Delhi, Aug 17 (PTI) Amazon India is 'excited" about the festive season, its optimism bolstered by strong Prime Day sales last month and rising demand from smaller cities, the e-commerce giant's India Head Samir Kumar has said, adding the company has stepped up supply-side readiness to meet expected festive demand.
Festive season shopping remains one of the biggest annual opportunities for brands, driven by cultural calendar, gifting traditions, lucrative discounts dished out, and consumer appetite for new and seasonal products.
According to 2025 edition of the JioStar Festive Sentiment Survey, 92 per cent of Indian consumers plan to continue or increase their festive spending this year, signalling robust consumer confidence and a golden opportunity for brands.
'I can tell you that as Amazon, we are preparing well for the event including fulfilment capabilities. We are enabling sellers to send their products into our fulfilment centres and we are getting ready for that. So I'm really excited about the entire festive season," Kumar told PTI.
Referring to the Prime Day sales metrics, Kumar said the 'good uptake" was recorded, with especially strong contributions from Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities.
'There was a good uptake and… Tier 2 and 3 cities performed really well.
'So the portion of business that we got from there was really high. As we go past that, we had our freedom sale and now it's coming up to festive season. It's already started and we look forward to the next few months. So the supply side is in place," he said.
Amazon last month said that Prime Day this time had more members shopping than any previous Prime Day event in India. According to the e-commerce firm, about 70 per cent of new Prime sign-ups before the event came from tier 2 and tier 3 cities and towns. The number of small and medium businesses receiving a sale during Prime Day 2025 reached an all-time high across all editions, the company had said, adding that over 68 per cent of SMBs participating in the event were from tier 2-3 cities and beyond.
When asked about demand indicators fuelling optimism for festive season sales, Kumar pointed to the customer sentiments on Amazon platform, healthy traffic, Prime uptake and deals.
'…the customer sentiments on Amazon…we are seeing decent traffic, Prime uptake is really good and the kind of deals and the prices that we'll have on the platform…and our sellers are excited about it," he said.
According to JioStar Festive Sentiment Survey, Millennials are expected to spend more than Gen Z, with higher budgets and category intent, while women shoppers are seen driving variety. The survey indicates that women will shop across more than two categories, including apparel, beauty, gadgets, and home decor. Apparel and fashion (33 per cent), mobiles (27 per cent), electronics (18 per cent), followed by holidays, jewellery, and beauty, were among top product categories, as per the survey.
Early indicators point to strong festive momentum driving growth in online platforms. Zepto Co-founder and CEO Aadit Palicha in a recent post on LinkedIn said that the quick commerce platform had touched a peak of 820 rakhis sold per minute this time – 2.5 times growth compared to last year's levels.
According to Unicommerce, with brands and marketplaces setting the tone for this year's festive season, Independence Day Sale 2025 has witnessed an e-commerce order volume growth of 14 per cent in 2025 as compared to the previous year.
Based on 35 million-plus transactions processed by Unicommerce's flagship platform Uniware during the 15-day period (July 31- August 14, 2025), this order volume growth was accompanied by a year on year gross merchandise value (GMV) growth of 12 per cent this year.
'Tier-3 cities emerged as the biggest growth story, recording around 14 million order items — nearly double the volumes from Tier-2 cities.
'Meanwhile, Tier-2 cities posted an impressive 26 per cent jump in order volumes compared to last year, underscoring the rising digital adoption and purchasing power beyond metros," Unicommerce said.
Categories such as home decor, health and pharma, electronics and home appliances, and FMCG drove overall order volume growth during this Independence Day Sale, it added. PTI MBI HVA

GST rate cut hopes drive nearly ₹1 lakh crore rally in Nifty auto stocks

Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai Motor, TVS Motor Company, and other auto stocks saw a massive rally in Monday's session after the government announced plans for sweeping changes to the goods and services tax (GST) regime. Analysts believe the reforms could revive demand in the auto sector, which has remained muted in recent quarters. Fourteen out of the 15 constituents of the Nifty Auto index closed with sharp gains, led by Maruti Suzuki, which surged 8.8% to ₹ 14,068 apiece, its biggest intraday jump in the last five years. Other major gainers included Ashok Leyland, TVS Motor Company, Hero MotoCorp, MRF, Mahindra & Mahindra, and Eicher Motors, all rising between 2.6% and 8%. The rally boosted the combined market capitalization of the 14 auto stocks by nearly ₹ 1 lakh crore, taking the sector's total m-cap to ₹ 22.56 lakh crore. In his Independence Day address, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced significant GST reforms, the most comprehensive since the rollout in 2017, announcing the ushering in of a two-tier GST structure—a reform billed as the 'next generation of GST,' expected to take shape by Diwali, as per sources. The current GST tax structure has four main categories of rates, at 5%, 12%, 18%, and 28%. The proposed changes will see the number of categories reduced to two, with most goods that were taxed at 12% and 28% now taxed at the lower rate of 5% and 18%, respectively. Even though changes to the GST had been discussed for years, the timing of the announcement in Modi's Independence Day speech was a surprise to many. The move comes against the backdrop of President Donald Trump's threat to double tariffs on Indian exports to the US to 50% by August 27 to penalize the country for buying oil from Russia. Automobiles, currently under the 28% slab, would move to 18% if the proposal is approved, which analysts believe could lead to price cuts and potentially revive sales. Auto manufacturers have been struggling in recent quarters amid weak urban demand, with many shifting focus to exports to sustain growth. Hero MotoCorp and Bajaj Auto both reported muted sales growth in the June quarter, while Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai Motor also posted flat passenger vehicle sales. If implemented, the GST cut would offer much-needed relief for the Indian automobile sector. 'Autos fall under the 28% GST bracket. If autos move to 18% and we see sharp price drops, this could drive the next auto upcycle, similar to 2008,' said Morgan Stanley. 'Currently, GST on passenger vehicles ranges from 29% to 50%, as a cess is imposed on top of GST based on the vehicle's size and engine capacity. In the new regime, the government may reduce the tax on smaller cars to 18% (from 28%) and move bigger cars to a 'special rate' of 40% while scrapping the cess. This could lower prices of smaller cars by around 8% and larger cars by 3–5%,' HSBC noted. GST reduction would negatively impact government revenues in the near term but drive-up Auto demand and hence job creation in India. PVs generate USD14-15 billion in GST collection, and 2Ws USD 5 billion, said the brokerage. Domestic brokerage Motilal Oswal added that passenger vehicles and commercial vehicles, currently taxed at 28%, will benefit most from the cut. Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors, and Ashok Leyland are well positioned to gain from lower effective prices and higher volumes. Disclaimer: This story is for educational purposes only.
