The First Slam Dunk has a perfect review score on Rotten Tomatoes
One review for The First Slam Dunk says: "There isn't much more that needs to be said other than you should watch this movie ASAP." This seems to perfectly sum up Takehiko Inoue's animated sports film.
The 2022 Japanese film, based on Inoue's Slam Dunk manga series, hit cinemas in Japan in December 2022. Takehiko Inoue not only wrote but also directed the film, which went on to win the Japan Academy Prize for Animation of the Year in 2023.

At the global box office, it was nothing short of a sensation, raking in an impressive $279 million worldwide. The First Slam Dunk offers a fresh take on its manga origins by focusing on Ryota Miyagi, the point guard for Shohoku High School's basketball team, whose passion for the sport is ignited by his elder brother, Sota.

Ryota, alongside teammates Takenori Akagi, Hanamichi Sakuragi, Kaede Rukawa, and Hisashi Mitsui, confronts the formidable inter-high basketball champions, Sannoh Kogyo High School. The film brings to life the manga's intense final game, while weaving in new flashbacks and an epilogue that delves into Ryota's personal journey, reports Surrey Live.
The First Slam Dunk has proven to be a commercial juggernaut. According to IMDB, it currently stands as the 12th highest-grossing Japanese film ever and the fifth highest-grossing anime film globally.
The First Slam Dunk boasts an impressive 100 per cent Rotten Tomatoes score and a 99 per cent audience rating, earning it critical acclaim. Critics rave about the film, with one reviewer stating: "Takehiko Inoue's The First Slam Dunk is a sports movie done right, with one of the best climaxes of the year that's guaranteed to leave you fist-pumping the air."
Another critic wrote: "The First Slam Dunk is one of the best basketball movies you could ever see. It's a suspenseful and emotionally gripping film that balances a story of achieving sports greatness and coping with grief."
Reviewers also commend director Takehiko Inoue's skilful adaptation of his own manga, with one saying: "Heart-pounding and heartrending, first-time director Takehiko Inoue's adaptation of his own manga proves that he has the skills of a pro." Another said: "No movie has so literally reduced basketball to 'just a game', and no movie this side of Hoop Dreams has so ecstatically conveyed why it's also so much more than that."

Another viewer wrote: "This movie will make you stand up and cheer. This movie gets what makes basketball great. I was so into the game that I was sweating and my heart racing while I watched. I would say that I was at the edge of my seat the whole time, but that's not true. I actually stood up to cheer and pump my fist as I watched.
"I can say all the sports movie review cliché stuff about this film, and it is all true. The music is great, the characters are great, and the story is great. If this movie does not pump you up, you do not have a pulse."
Another review said: "One of the greatest movies I've seen in my life. I'm not kidding. Amazing animation, amazing soundtrack, amazing story all amazingly executed. And the best part is that it's a movie for everyone. Even if you don't like anime. Even if you don't like basketball. Even if you don't care about sports. Enough said go watch it!!!"
Another viewer wrote: "Animation was incredible, I'm not even a huge fan of basketball but this was such a gripping story I was on the edge of my seat the entire time." And another simply stated: "Like the title says: a total slam dunk."

Viewed an enormous 252.1 million times, Wednesday has been described as 'tons of fun' and 'captivating' by fans on Rotten Tomatoes, while critics heaped praise on Jenna Ortega's acting skills as the sardonic Wednesday Addams. The series comes second only to the first season of Squid Game in Netflix's global TV rankings, but the upcoming instalment could well steal the top spot. The show follows Wednesday Addams, who enrols at Nevermore Academy, a school for outcasts, after being expelled from her previous high school. Season one saw the titular character adjust to her new life at Nevermore and grapple with psychic visions, all while investigating a string of supernatural murders. Now, Wednesday is returning to the Academy, but this time with her family in tow. Her brother, Pugsley (Isaac Ordonez), arrives on campus, while mother Morticia (Catherine Zeta-Jones) has accepted a role at Nevermore. Meanwhile, the trailer revealed a 'jaw-dropping' twist that sees Wednesday trying to save her roommate Enid's (Emma Myers) life, and Lady Gaga will be joining the star-studded show with a cameo. Other new cast members include Joanna Lumley as Wednesday's grandmother, Steve Buscemi as Principal Dort and Billie Piper as the Academy's new head of music. The new season of Wednesday will premiere on Netflix in two parts, with part one landing on August 6 and part two on September 3 — but it's not the only hit series returning this month. From reality TV to comedy, thriller and romance, viewers across the genres are getting ready for their favourite shows to return. Fourteen famous faces will be taking on the SAS selection process in this gruelling reality TV show, joined by an elite team of ex-Special Forces soldiers. This year's line-up includes former footballers Adebayo Akinfenwa and Troy Deeney, dancer and reality star Louie Spence, Love Islanders Tasha Ghori, Chloe Burrows and Adam Collard and The Traitors winner Harry Clark to name a few. Simon Cowell will also be making an appearance on the show, but not as a recruit. Instead, he appears when calling former X Factor star Lucy Spraggan to help motivate her. Lucy has revealed that Simon, who walked her down the aisle during her wedding last year, was left fuming after the directing staff hung up on him. Where to watch: Celebrity SAS 2025 will premiere on Channel 4 on Sunday, August 3, with episodes airing every Sunday and Monday thereafter. Starring Seth Rogan and Rose Byrne, Apple TV Plus comedy Platonic follows a pair of former college best friends who get back in touch as they approach midlife. The pair fell out when stay-at-home mum Sylvia (Byrne) told the now recently divorced Will (Rogan) that she didn't think he should marry his fiancée. As they reconnect, their chaotic friendship begins to consume their lives. The show drew a lot of comparisons to 1989's When Harry Met Sally, but it isn't a rom-com. In fact, it subtly subverts the genre. Season one ended with a time jump, with Will engaged and Sylvia running her own event planning business. In season two, the pair once again grapple with making their co-dependent friendship work, now that Will is in a committed relationship. Where to watch: The first two episodes of Platonic Season 2 land on Apple TV Plus on August 6, followed by one episode weekly until October 1. Big budget reality TV show The Fortune Hotel has been likened to The Traitors for its cat-and-mouse premise. Hosted by Stephen Mangan, the show sees 10 pairs of players presented with 10 suitcases – eight are empty, one contains the £250,000 jackpot, and the other is the dreaded Early Checkout, which signifies that their time on the show is over. The contestants swap cases throughout the show, and must lie and deceive their way to getting hold of the £250,000 jackpot. The Fortune Hotel saw three pairings make it to a nail-biting final last May, and this month it's returning for round two. Metro columnist Adam Miller headed to The Gallivant Hotel in Rye last year to have a go at playing The Fortune Hotel for himself. 'My nerves were shot. After we'd swapped our case with a rival team (who we felt had become visibly more nervous after the cocktail challenge), we were pretty confident we were holding the prize money. 'But so did everyone else. The next team pinched our case from us immediately and we were stuck with theirs, which, to my horror, felt noticeably lighter than the case we'd been clinging onto all day. Surely that could only mean one thing – we had the check-out card. 'After being a faux reality TV contestant for a matter of hours, I have a newfound respect for anyone brave enough to play these games for real and not buckle.' Read more about Adam's experience playing The Fortune Hotel. Where to watch: The Fortune Hotel returns to ITV and ITVX on August 6. We've had eight seasons of unorthodox dating show Love is Blind already, and last year a new UK version took to screens for the first time, hosted by Emma and Matt Willis. This month, the experiment (which sees couples get engaged before meeting in person) is returning. Following the couples over several weeks, the show sees them move in together, plan their wedding, and find out if their physical connection is as strong as the emotional one they had already developed. Season one was full of the usual drama, with three couples saying 'I do' (one of which recently announced their pregnancy) and another three deciding to walk away. Where to watch: Episodes one to four of Love is Blind UK Season 2 land on Netflix on August 13, followed by episodes five to eight on August 20 and episodes nine to 10 on August 27. Following his cameo in the recent Superman movie, which has soared at the box office this summer, John Cena is back as Chris Smith, aka Peacemaker, a vigilante who fights for peace at any cost. Originally a spin-off of The Suicide Squad film, which was released in 2021 to rave reviews, Peacemaker Season 2 will follow the vigilante hero as he discovers a parallel world where he can live out the life of his dreams — but it means he must confront his traumatic past. The show has been a hit wth TV fans, earning an impressive 93% Rotten Tomatoes score and praised by critics for its wild action scenes, clever twists and humour. Meanwhile, audiences have called it 'compelling', a 'joyride' and 'pure comic-book mayhem'. Where to watch: Peacemaker Season 2 lands on Sky Max and NOW in the UK and HBO Max in the US on August 21, with episodes airing weekly until October 9. It's been an almost two-year wait for the second season of this teen romance drama, which has been compared to Prime Video hit The Summer I Turned Pretty and Netflix comedy Never Have I Ever. If you like love triangles and will-they-won't-they romance, this one's worth checking out. Season one saw 15-year-old Jackie Howard (Nikki Rodriguez) move from New York to rural Colorado after losing her family in a tragic accident. More Trending There, she meets the two Walter brothers, Cole (Noah LaLonde) and Alex (Ashby Gentry) — and you can probably take a good guess at some of the teenage drama that ensues. After heading back to New York over the summer, season two sees Jackie return to Colorado with a big decision to make. My Life With the Walter Boys has a disappointing 42% score on Rotten Tomatoes, with reviewers criticising its 'generic storylines', but audiences were much more enthused, awarding it a 71% score and hailing the series as 'wholesome' and 'very bingeable'. Marcus Rashford speaks out on permanent Man Utd transfer after Barcelona 'humiliation'

Marcus Rashford has responded to questions about his chance of making a permanent move to Barcelona after suffering 'humiliation' early on in his loan stint with the Catalans On-loan Marcus Rashford isn't inclined to give much away regarding a potential permanent move to Barcelona. The Manchester United forward has been sent to Catalonia for the upcoming campaign after falling out of favour under Ruben Amorim. ‌ Rashford's temporary move to Barca gives the reigning kings of La Liga a chance to sign the player for £30million. That figure represents a fraction of Rashford's value just a couple of seasons ago prior to his stock plummeting at Old Trafford. ‌ However, there are still slight doubts regarding Barca's financial state and whether Rashford will be registered in time for the start of the season. La Liga's financial fair play laws have seen the club run into issues of late, with Dani Olmo and Pau Victor's eligibility coming into question last season. ‌ Spain star Olmo even missed playing time last term while Barcelona sought approval over their salary cap issues. But Rashford gave a laid-back response when asked about any potential pitfalls, having already made a couple of appearances for his new side in pre-season. "I'm not worried," he told Catalan newspaper Sport, when asked about his registration concerns. "It's something the club needs to resolve, and I trust they will. I'm focused on training and being ready for the start of the competition." Rashford then made his feelings clear on a permanent exit from United, insisting he just wants to "enjoy the moment" rather than think too far ahead. Rashford, 27, made his Barca debut in a 3-1 friendly win over Japanese outfit Vissel Kobe at the end of July. However, the arrival appeared to go awry as the England international came off the bench, only to be substituted off again after 30 minutes. ‌ The incident was framed as somewhat embarrassing for the player, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Aston Villa. However, new boss Hansi Flick was quick to dismiss any notions of humiliation, insisting the decision was purely to manage the player's fitness. "We're being very careful with Marcus because he just came from an injury and he hasn't started training completely with the ball," said Flick after that match. "He's a week behind the others. He hasn't been training as much with the ball, and we want to look after him." ‌ Rashford impressed on loan under Unai Emery and helped Villa make a deep run in the Champions League. He should be back among Europe's elite this coming season, though the same can't be said for parent club United after they missed out on continental qualification altogether. It's also evident Rashford is putting his new team's needs ahead of any individual goals. And he believes his ability to contribute from different parts of the pitch puts him in good stead. ‌ "I can play in different positions and score goals from any of them," he said. "It's about creating chances from different areas and taking advantage ofthem." That's the kind of attitude that may just convince Barcelona to invest in his services in a permanent capacity. However, the United academy graduate has a long road ahead to prove he's worthy of the outlay.

BBC drama series praised as 'absolute perfection' by fans arrives on Netflix this weekend

One of the most raved about series of the 2020s is making its way onto Netflix this weekend and fans cannot wait. One of the most praised and gripping series that took the world by storm a few years ago is making its long awaited debut on Netflix this weekend. Normal People, the BBC drama that has been hailed by fans as a "masterpiece," will officially be available to stream from Sunday, August 3. ‌ Originally released in 2020 on BBC iPlayer, the 12-part series quickly became a cultural phenomenon, drawing both widespread critical acclaim and a passionate fanbase. Now, Netflix audiences will finally have the chance to revisit, or discover for the first time, the emotional and deeply affecting story that captivates the world. ‌ ‌ Adapted from Sally Rooney's best-selling novel, Normal People follows the intense and evolving relationship between two Irish teenagers, Connell Waldron and Marianne Sheridan, as they navigate the complexities of love, class and identity from their school days in Sligo to their university years in Dublin. The series spans more than a decade, following the main characters from their teenage years into adulthood. At the start Connell is the well-liked, quietly intelligent student while Marianne is the wealthy but socially isolated girl whose home Connell's mum cleans. When their paths cross again at university, the dynamic between them has shifted. Marianne has grown into herself, while Connell struggles to find his place, but despite these changes, the deep connection they share continues. ‌ As their relationship weaves in and out of romantic and platonic territory, the series earned widespread praise for its raw and honest portrayal of themes such as male mental health, sexuality and the emotional complexities of "friends with benefits" relationships. The show was an instant hit, and boosted the careers of Paul Mescal who plays Connell and Daisy Edgar-Jones who plays Marianne. Mescal went on to star in Gladiator II, and is playing Paul McCartney in the upcoming Beatles biopics, while Daisy has since starred in Where the Crawdads Sing and Twisters. ‌ The duo's chemistry and acting skills earned the show raving reviews with fans calling it a "masterpiece." Following the show's initial success on BBC iPlayer, Normal People received raving reviews and an impressive 91% Rotten Tomatoes score. Writing on Rotten Tomatoes, one fan of the series described Normal People as "deeply moving" expressing that the series "stayed with them long after watching." As another fan stated: "Real, raw and vulnerable. This highly emotional show had me hooked from the beginning." ‌ While other viewers added that the show is an "Irish masterpiece," and "absolute perfection." Another viewer praised the actors performance, writing: "Beautifully filmed with a great music score and pulled together by two extraordinary performances by Paul Mescal and Daisy Edgar-Jones. You felt every moment with the characters and at the end you just want to go back and watch it all over again." Viewers will be able to watch Normal People on iPlayer from Sunday, August 3, on Netflix.
