BBC drama series praised as 'absolute perfection' by fans arrives on Netflix this weekend
One of the most praised and gripping series that took the world by storm a few years ago is making its long awaited debut on Netflix this weekend. Normal People, the BBC drama that has been hailed by fans as a "masterpiece," will officially be available to stream from Sunday, August 3.
Originally released in 2020 on BBC iPlayer, the 12-part series quickly became a cultural phenomenon, drawing both widespread critical acclaim and a passionate fanbase. Now, Netflix audiences will finally have the chance to revisit, or discover for the first time, the emotional and deeply affecting story that captivates the world.
Adapted from Sally Rooney's best-selling novel, Normal People follows the intense and evolving relationship between two Irish teenagers, Connell Waldron and Marianne Sheridan, as they navigate the complexities of love, class and identity from their school days in Sligo to their university years in Dublin.
The series spans more than a decade, following the main characters from their teenage years into adulthood. At the start Connell is the well-liked, quietly intelligent student while Marianne is the wealthy but socially isolated girl whose home Connell's mum cleans.
When their paths cross again at university, the dynamic between them has shifted. Marianne has grown into herself, while Connell struggles to find his place, but despite these changes, the deep connection they share continues.
As their relationship weaves in and out of romantic and platonic territory, the series earned widespread praise for its raw and honest portrayal of themes such as male mental health, sexuality and the emotional complexities of "friends with benefits" relationships.
The show was an instant hit, and boosted the careers of Paul Mescal who plays Connell and Daisy Edgar-Jones who plays Marianne. Mescal went on to star in Gladiator II, and is playing Paul McCartney in the upcoming Beatles biopics, while Daisy has since starred in Where the Crawdads Sing and Twisters.
The duo's chemistry and acting skills earned the show raving reviews with fans calling it a "masterpiece." Following the show's initial success on BBC iPlayer, Normal People received raving reviews and an impressive 91% Rotten Tomatoes score.
Writing on Rotten Tomatoes, one fan of the series described Normal People as "deeply moving" expressing that the series "stayed with them long after watching." As another fan stated: "Real, raw and vulnerable. This highly emotional show had me hooked from the beginning."
While other viewers added that the show is an "Irish masterpiece," and "absolute perfection."

Victoria Derbyshire revealed she 'thought she was going to die' as she reflected on 10 years since receiving the shock diagnosis in a new interview. The BBC presenter, who is the face of Newsnight, was given the news by medics in 2015 just days after discovering how her right nipple 'looked odd'. Victoria, 56, underwent a mastectomy and reconstructive surgery soon after. Following 301 days of treatment including six sessions of chemotherapy and 30 sessions of radiotherapy, the mother-of-two was given the all clear with an 11 per cent chance of the cancer recurring. Cancer-free and marking a decade on from the life-threatening ordeal, Victoria told The Sunday Times magazine: 'I thought I was going to die.' Recalling the days and weeks after her diagnosis, Victoria took her family on holiday as she kept thinking it could be her final one. She said: 'When I didn't know if my cancer was going to be treatable, we went on holiday to Barcelona.' Victoria added that she took 'a million pictures' and insisted she had to be in them all, as she faced into her recovery. The journalist, who lives in Surrey with her husband Mark and two sons, said she hasn't changed the way she lives or eats and still drinks as she wants 'to be normal like I used to be'. She previously told how she didn't want to tell her husband and sons about her diagnosis immediately as she went into 'practical mode'. Victoria will be on holiday with her family when the anniversary of her diagnosis takes place, and said she plans to a 'big blowout' celebration with them. While Victoria is thankful her son Oliver vividly remembers the price of the hospital parking more than her health battle, she praised her husband Mark for his support. She said: 'He did step up, big time. Obviously while I was being treated he was basically a single parent.' During her chemotherapy, he would sit with her and read the newspapers to her as she struggled to read at the time. Victoria lost her hair during her treatment and wore a wig because she 'didn't want people to feel sorry for her'. It was her illness that spurred her decision to marry Mark after 17 years together in 2018. He had proposed before she was pregnant with her first child - however the two never actually tied the knot. Two years after beating the illness, Victoria stripped off for ITV's The Real Full Monty and competed in I'm A Celebrity in 2020. In January 2020, it was announced that the broadcaster's eponymous show was being cancelled by the BBC because the cost of doing it on a 'linear channel' were too high. Victoria says that while she was 'gutted' the show had been axed, her battle with breast cancer gave her a 'different perspective' and allowed her to cope with the loss of her show. WHAT IS A DOUBLE MASTECTOMY? A double mastectomy is the removal of both breasts. This is a way of treating breast cancer and is often done to women who are at a high risk of the disease returning after therapy. The treatment may also be suitable for women who are unable to have radiation therapy, have a tumour larger than 5cm across or have a mutation, such as in the BRCA gene, that increases their cancer risk. Most women stay in hospital for one or two nights but are able to return to their regular activities within around four weeks. Side effects can include pain, swelling, a build up of blood or fluid at the surgery site, limited arm movement and numbness in the chest or upper arm. After surgery, some women may wish to have the breast mound rebuilt to restore its appearance in breast reconstruction surgery. Some patients may require other treatment after a mastectomy such as radiation, chemo or hormone therapy.

The 12th series of Love Island is coming to a dramatic end but for those wanting to get even closer to the action, they are able to apply for future series of the hit ITV2 show Love Island 2025 may be wrapping up this evening as one couple are crowned winners, yet bosses will soon be on the hunt for next year's cast. The finale of the 12th series airs on Monday night and the latest offering has been dubbed TV gold by fans. It has been hailed as 'iconic' with another summer filled with jaw-dropping twists and turns. Stars Toni and Cach, Yasmin and Jamie, Shakira and Harry or Ty and Angel will be taking home the title tonight. However, fans will have to cope with a break from the hit ITV2 show as it won't return until next year. It comes after reports of all the celebrities rumoured to be joining BBC Strictly Come Dancing 2025. For those feeling a little inspired by this year's Islanders and think they have what it takes to head to the iconic villa, dreams can come true as anyone can apply for the show. ITV have a section dedicated to Love Island on its website where hopefuls can submit their application forms. ITV put a call out for applicants in February this year. They will also be on the hunt for former contestants to make an epic return to the villa as Love Island: All Stars makes its comeback. Single Islanders from across the 10 years of the show will return to the famous Villa in South Africa, but this time they'll be in the villa for six weeks instead of five. In the latest shock to rock the long-running programme, drug use claims were submitted to the BBC in March by Russell's Solicitors on behalf of a celebrity contestant. It's believed that other individuals have also brought forward allegations of drug consumption on Strictly Come Dancing to the BBC. Earlier in the week, it was reported that one such allegation involved a Strictly star who allegedly commented on another individual's dilated pupils. It comes as the BBC is reportedly ready to offer the two stars a rehabilitation programme following revelations of cocaine use. Despite the drama, the professional dancers arrived for rehearsals today ahead of the new series. The talented stars, who were photographed for their first rehearsal for the show last week, smiled for the cameras as they made their way into the studio. Nadiya Bychkova, Johannes Radebe, Kai Widdrington, Gorka Marquez, Nikita Kuzmin, Dianne Buswell all looked ready to work up a sweat as they arrived wearing their comfy clothes - with Nadiya sporting an oversized Minnie Mouse jumper and Gorka plumping for some loose-fitting stripey slacks. Joining them for rehearsals were Luba Mushtuk, Karen Hauer, Aljaz Skorjanec, Katya Jones, Neil Jones, Michelle Tskiakkas, Nancy Xu, and new recruits Alexis Warr and Julian Caillon. It comes after bosses reportedly launched an investigation into claims that two of its stars took cocaine. The BBC has hired law firm Pinsent Masons to probe the allegations. Now, bosses are said to be set to offer those at the centre of the storm the chance of rehab. It's also claimed there could be random drug tests added to the upcoming tours, which are known to include after-parties. A source told the Sun, following the breakout news: "The BBC is taking the allegations really seriously. Bosses are aware of the two stars in question and have a duty of care to make sure they're OK." They added: "As per BBC policy, the option of specialised professional support is on the table and will be offered. While drug testing won't happen on the main show, bosses are considering bringing in random checks for the tour next year." In a statement shared with the Mirror over the weekend, a representative for the BBC said: "We have clear protocols and policies in place for dealing with any serious complaint raised with us. We would always encourage people to speak to us if they have concerns. It would not be appropriate for us to comment further."
