Olympians ready to take in sport's 'epicenter' in Southern California
Paris earned rave reviews for its Olympic surfing venue halfway around the world in 2024, with Teahupo'o, Tahiti, praised for its days of perfect surf in the sport's ancestral home of Polynesia.
But the 2028 venue announced on Tuesday, Trestles Beach, could give competitors a greater experience of being an Olympian, just a stone's throw from their fellow athletes in Los Angeles.
"Tahiti was great because the waves were great but we were removed from 'ground zero' of the Paris Games," said Fernando Aguerre, the president of the International Surfing Association.
Aguerre told Reuters he was delighted with the selection of Trestles Beach, which beat out the other finalist Huntington Beach, with its consistent, quality waves and point break.
"Those two finalists are probably the two best, most consistent waves in Southern California," he said. "Trestles is higher quality and also has a higher likelihood of good waves happening."
Featuring in its third Games, the sport has already well-established itself on the Olympic landscape, said Aguerre, with former ISA Vice President Kirsty Coventry recently elected as the incoming IOC president.
"Southern California is where competitions, industry, some of the most famous world champions live," he said. "Contemporary surfing today, really, the epicenter in Southern California."

The tribute marks the Reds' first return to their home since Jota's sad passing in early July. A similar tribute from a Liverpool legend has also been performed at each of Liverpool's past two fixtures, during their Asia pre-season tour. Jota and his brother were driving in northern Spain last month when a blowout reportedly caused the Portuguese star to lose control of his Lamborghini and veer off the road. The incident left the football world in mourning with tributes pouring in for the 28-year-old from all corners of the globe. Liverpool have since retired his number 20 shirt at the club in his honour. There were concerns ahead of the game that the match and its heartfelt tribute would not be able to go ahead at all. Parts of Anfield had to be evacuated less than an hour before kick-off due to a an emergency alarm. A club statement read: "Shortly before 15:50pm there was a false alarm in the Anfield Main Stand, leading to supporters in that area of the stadium to be temporarily evacuated." Fans did not have to wait long once the game kicked off, with youngster Rio Ngumoha opening the scoring inside two minutes with a beautiful curling strike. Darwin Nunez would double their advantage minutes later, making a heart symbol in celebration. Nunez previously honoured former team-mate Jota by mimicking his signature celebration after scoring in a friendly last month.

Third British shot put glory for Powys star Adele Nicoll
ADELE Nicoll celebrated her third British women's shot put title at the Novuna UK Athletics Championships in Birmingham on Sunday. The Birchfield Harrier and ex-Oswestry Olympian from Welshpool saved her best throw until last as she went out to 17.17m in round six. Producing a hugely consistent series of throws in the 16m+ region, Serena Vincent of City of Portsmouth won silver with 16.77m while Nana Gyedu of Blackheath & Bromley won bronze after a best effort of 15.64m in round two. Nicoll is now looking ahead to her other passion, bobsledding and the winter sports season. Nicoll said: "Not bad for a Bobsledder. Ahh, I love throwing. "It's been a whirlwind trying to learn better technique whilst trying to get rid of some bad habits. We're always learning though aren't we. "But I'm so happy with the foundations that have been laid for next year. Time to lock the shot in the cupboard. It's nearly time to get the helmet and ice spikes out." GB sprinter Prescod retires from athletics aged 29
British sprinter Reece Prescod says athletics pushed him "physically, mentally, and emotionally" in ways he "never imagined possible" as he announced his decision to retire from the 29-year-old has hung up his running spikes after a decade as a professional which saw participate in three World Championships and the 2020 Olympic is the fourth fastest British man ever over 100m, with a personal best of 9.93 seconds, a tenth of a second behind Zharnel Hughes' national won a silver medal in the 100m at the 2018 European Championships in Berlin, and picked a bronze in the 4x100m relay at the 2022 Worlds in Eugene. London-born Prescod, who represented Enfield and Haringey Athletic Club, reached the semi-finals of the 100m at Tokyo 2020 in his only appearance at an Olympics."Athletics has taught me invaluable lessons, the true meaning of hard work, dedication, and discipline," Prescod said in a post on his Instagram account., external"I have been fortunate enough to travel the world, compete at the highest level, and represent my country with pride.
