Road closures set to impact Cwmbran and Pontypool in June
Torfaen County Borough Council has announced the closures, which will affect Wentslade Road, Leigh Road, and Bowleaze. The works are necessary for the replacement of wooden poles and for cherry picker operations. Starting on Monday, June 9, Wentslade Road, Tranch, Pontypool, will be closed from 9am to 5pm. An alternative route has been arranged, directing traffic along Wentslade Road, Parkes Lane, and Tranch Road. Access will be maintained for residents and emergency services "as far as is reasonably practicable". On the same day, Leigh Road, Trevethin, Pontypool, will also be closed between 9am and 5pm. The alternative route for this closure is along Leigh Road, Channel View, Park Road, Riverside, Osborne Road, George Street, and Porthmawr Road. Again, access will be maintained for residents and emergency services "as far as is reasonably practicable". In Cwmbran, Bowleaze, Greenmeadow, will be closed from Wednesday, June 4, to Friday, June 6. As the road is a residential cul-de-sac, no alternative route is available, but access will be maintained for residents and emergency services where possible. Each road closure has been authorised under the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 and is necessary for works to be carried out on or near the roads. The council has stated that the closures may be extended if necessary, but will not exceed a period of 18 months. The council has apologised for any inconvenience these closures may cause and is urging motorists to plan their journeys accordingly. It is recommended that road users allow extra time for their journeys and consider alternative routes where possible. The council's decision to carry out these works reflects an ongoing commitment to maintaining and improving the county's infrastructure. The replacement of wooden poles is expected to improve the reliability and safety of services in the area. The cherry picker works being carried out in Bowleaze are also part of essential maintenance. The council has assured residents and businesses affected by these works that everything possible is being done to minimise disruption. This includes carrying out works during off-peak hours where possible and ensuring access is maintained for residents and emergency services. Anyone with concerns or queries about the road closures is advised to contact the council directly. Torfaen County Borough Council can be contacted via their website or by phone during normal office hours. Updates on the progress of the works will be posted on the council's website and social media channels.

Welsh Government to cut speed limit on section of A470
Welsh Government to cut speed limit on section of A470 The government wants to reduce the speed by 10mph to remove what has been described as an 'anomaly' Section of the A470 at Blaenau Ffestiniog that will become 30mph (Image: Google ) The Welsh Government is taking action to standardise the speed limits on a portion of the A470 to address an existing 'anomaly'. On entering Blaenau Ffestiniog from the Crimea Pass, the targeted stretch currently has a 40mph limit, which is planned to be reduced to 30mph, as detailed in the map provided. An anomaly with the current speed limit near Blaenau Ffestiniog has been flagged by officials, leading to plans to implement a new 30mph zone along a section of the major A470 road. Additionally, a £25 million investment to repair roads across Wales, including the A470 which links Llandudno and Cardiff, was announced by the Welsh Government this week. For our free daily briefing on the biggest issues facing the nation, sign up to the Wales Matters newsletter here Officials elaborated on the need for modification in an announcement, explaining: "The proposed Order is necessary to remove an anomaly that currently exists with the current speed limit at this location. The effect of the proposed Order will be to introduce a 40mph and 30mph speed limit on the relevant length of the A470 trunk road between Talwaenydd and Rhiwbryfdir, Gwynedd, for the installation of a new uncontrolled pedestrian and cyclist crossing refuge island." They further disclosed their intentions, citing the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984: "The Welsh Ministers propose to make an Order in exercise of their powers under the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984. The A470 Trunk Road (North of Blaenau Ffestiniog, Gwynedd) (40mph Speed Limit) Order 2008 will be revoked by the proposed Order.", reports North Wales Live. A roughly one-kilometre stretch is slated for the speed reduction from 40mph to 30mph, commencing just past the road leading to Tal-y-Waenydd/Tai Oakeley Terrace and continuing down to the Pant yr Afon Hydro Power Station. The Welsh Government is pouring funds into 22 projects to bolster Wales' strategic road network, with plans to enhance over 100km of tarmac and tackle the scourge of around 30,000 potholes, ensuring future road resilience. This comes on top of a colossal effort to mend tens of thousands more potholes through a local government borrowing initiative unveiled in March. This scheme grants councils access to £120m to expedite local road repairs. Already in motion, the programme encompasses two bridge refurbishments addressing seven bridges, 18 resurfacing endeavours, and a pair of footway upgrades benefitting 10 community spots across Wales. Transport and North Wales Cabinet Secretary Ken Skates has declared: "Fixing our roads is a key priority. The comprehensive programme of works that are being delivered as part of our £25m investment will help improve the future resilience of our strategic roads network and prevent potholes. Article continues below "I am pleased to hear that some of this work has already started with more to follow in the coming months. I look forward to seeing some of the end results."
