Massive wildfire destroys homes in Cyprus, 2 bodies found in burned-out car
Police initially reported late Wednesday that Civil Defence personnel found the charred body of a single individual inside the vehicle on a main road connecting fire-hit hillside villages. But a second body was discovered early Thursday morning, and police said identification efforts are ongoing.
Photos posted on social media purported to show the victims' gutted vehicle on the shoulder of the main Monagri-Alassa road.
Fire Service Spokesman Andreas Kettis told state-run Cyprus News Agency there are currently no active fronts, but fire crews were still battling numerous flare-ups, and winds are expected to pick up later in the day. Up to 14 aircraft are resuming water drops over hard-to-reach areas.
Cyprus' Justice Minister Marios Hartsiotis told the state broadcaster that more than 100 people who were evacuated from fire-hit communities are being hosted in temporary shelters.
The fire forced the evacuation of 14 villages along a 14-kilometre stretch of mountainous terrain. Media reports showed gutted homes smouldering as flames swept through the outskirts of some villages. In the village of Lofou, at least 20 homes were destroyed as fires threatened a group of stranded evacuees whose police buses had to turn back as the fire front shifted to block their exit.
Images broadcast on media late Wednesday showed flames consuming trees, brush and other vegetation along a huge front burning bright orange against the backdrop of a nighttime sky.
Police continued to block road access to the fire-afflicted communities as area residents vented against what they called a disorganised response to the huge fire.
Government spokesman Constantinos Letymbiotis said Spain would be sending two firefighting aircraft Thursday morning to assist local crews. Jordan is helping with two of its own helicopters, which had been deployed in Cyprus for firefighting. An RAF Chinook helicopter that operates from one of two British Bases on Cyprus is also assisting.
Limassol Municipality and the local soccer club Apollonas offered apartments and a basketball court, respectively, to temporarily house evacuees.

Karnataka home minister Dr G Parameshwara acknowledged the discovery of the MDMA drug-manufacturing unit in Mysuru. He stated that the Mumbai Police had received information after arresting an accused, which led them to Mysuru. 'Mumbai police came to Mysuru based on the information. They requested our police for assistance and made the arrests," said Parameshwara, expressing serious concern over the incident: 'This is indeed a worry." The minister assured that further action would be taken. 'Karnataka police will also investigate this matter. This has happened in our state," he emphasised. He added that the investigation would delve into where the drugs were being supplied from Mysuru and whether this was a new operation. While initial reports suggested the operation had been ongoing for about 20 days, Parameshwara indicated it might have been active even longer. The call by the MLA was made to enquire about the status of a death certificate for one Rinki Devi. The secretary answers the call but fails to recognise the MLA, prompting a sharp response. 'You don't know Bhai Virendra? You want me to introduce myself? The whole country knows me," the purported voice of Bhai Virendra can be heard saying. The secretary responds, saying he is not scared and will only show respect if the MLA speaks to him respectfully. 'If you speak respectfully, I will do the same. If you talk crooked, I will talk crooked. I am not scared of you," he can be heard saying. 'Joote se maarunga (I will hit you with a shoe), and you can file a case if you want. You don't follow protocol. You dare to say who is Bhai Virendra?," the MLA threatens. Bihar gangster wanted for murder killed in police encounter in UPs Hapur
Hapur/Lucknow, Jul 28 (PTI) A gangster wanted in a high-profile murder case in Bihar was killed in an encounter with police in Hapur district of Uttar Pradesh, a senior officer said here on Monday. The gunfight broke out on the intervening night of Sunday and Monday, Additional Director General (ADG) of UP STF Amitabh Yash said in a statement. The exchange of fire took place in the Simbhaoli area of Hapur district, involving the Noida unit of the special task force of the Uttar Pradesh Police, along with Bihar Police and Hapur police. During the encounter, the gangster sustained a gunshot injury to his chest and was rushed to a hospital, where he succumbed to injuries, he said. According to ADG Yash, a significant quantity of firearms, cartridges, and other items were seized. The deceased has been identified as Dabloo Yadav, a resident of Sahebpur Kamal area in Begusarai district of Bihar. He was a wanted criminal in a murder case and carried a cash reward of Rs 50,000 on his head. Yadav was the main accused in the abduction and murder of Vikash Kumar alias Rakesh Kadam, the block president of the Hindustani Awam Morcha (HAM party) and a social worker, in Begusarai district, the STF said. On May 24, 2025, Yadav, with the help of his gang, kidnapped Kadam from the Sahebpur Kamal area and took him to the riverine 'diara' region where he was killed and buried under sand to conceal the body, the STF added.
