Panchayat-Like Drama Unfolds As Bihar MLA Threatens Village Secretary For Not Recognising Him

As the village secretary fails to recognise the MLA, the latter allegedly threatens to hit the former with a shoe.
A real-life incident mirrored a scene from the web series Panchayat when a dispute erupted between an RJD MLA and a local panchayat secretary. A purported audio clip, which is now viral on the internet, records a spat between the two after the latter failed to recognise Bhai Virendra, a legislator from Maner in Bihar.
The MLA can be heard threatening to hit the secretary with his shoes after he fails to recognise him. The call by the MLA was made to enquire about the status of a death certificate for one Rinki Devi.
The secretary answers the call but fails to recognise the MLA, prompting a sharp response. 'You don't know Bhai Virendra? You want me to introduce myself? The whole country knows me," the purported voice of Bhai Virendra can be heard saying.
The secretary responds, saying he is not scared and will only show respect if the MLA speaks to him respectfully.
'If you speak respectfully, I will do the same. If you talk crooked, I will talk crooked. I am not scared of you," he can be heard saying.
'Joote se maarunga (I will hit you with a shoe), and you can file a case if you want. You don't follow protocol. You dare to say who is Bhai Virendra?," the MLA threatens.
The secretary, however, maintains that he was not aware of the MLA's identity and asks about the work he called to enquire about.
'Please talk about the work. Your request is already in process," he said.
'You have no right to this job if you don't know your local MLA. Transfer? This won't stop at transfer. Where are you even from?" The MLA asks.

The incident is reminiscent of the tense relationship between MLA Chandrakishore Singh and Secretary Abhishek Tripathi in the popular web series Panchayat, where frequent power struggles and clashes of ego between local politicians and government officials form a central theme. Much like in the show, the real-life exchange highlights the friction that can arise when political authority meets bureaucratic process at the grassroots level.

Maratha reservation: Jarange warns of fresh hunger strike on August 29

Jalna, Jul 29 (PTI) Reservation activist Manoj Jarange on Tuesday accused the Maharashtra government of failing to fulfil its promises to the Maratha community and warned of launching a fresh hunger strike in Mumbai on August 29. Speaking to media persons at Antarwali Sarthi village in Jalna district, Jarange alleged that the government has deceived the Maratha community. The activist has undertaken multiple hunger strikes demanding the recognition of all Marathas as Kunbis — an agrarian caste listed under the Other Backward Classes category and reservation for the politically dominant community in government jobs and education. He has consistently called for the implementation of historical records, including the Bombay, Satara, and Hyderabad gazettes, which he claims document the classification of the Maratha community as Kunbis. 'Four major demands of the Marathas, which the government assured would be implemented, have not been fulfilled. The government has once again deceived the community," Jarange said. He warned of undertaking a fresh hunger strike in Mumbai on August 29 and launching a march to the city. 'We have been patient for the last two years. Now the time has come to rise. I appeal to all Marathas — don't sit silently. We must fight for our rights," he said, urging community members to wrap up their farming activities in two months and prepare to march to Mumbai. The activist slammed the administration for failing to issue the government gazette regarding the Sage Soyare notification and for not implementing the gazettes of Bombay, Satara, and Hyderabad. He claimed that more than 58 lakh documents have been collected to prove that Kunbis and Marathas are the same, and demanded the release of Kunbi certificates based on these records. While appreciating the efforts of the Shinde Committee in unearthing crucial documents, he criticised government officers for not issuing Kunbi certificates despite evidence. Jarange further lashed out at the state government for not withdrawing cases registered against Maratha reservation protesters, calling it a betrayal of trust. 'I will not back down this time. The government must act or face the consequences," he said. PTI COR ARU view comments First Published: July 29, 2025, 12:15 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. ‘His Blood Not For Sale In...': Tallal's Brother On Claims Of Nimisha Priya's Pardon

Last Updated: Abdul Fattah questioned the legitimacy of the claims made on behalf of the Grand Mufti The family of Yemeni businessman Tallal Abdo Mahdi has reacted to the recent claims that Indian nurse Nimisha Priya's death sentence has been overturned, calling it a baseless and unauthorised attempt to manipulate public sentiment. In a rebuttal to a statement made by the office of Musaliyar, the Grand Mufti of India, Tallal's brother, Abdul Fattah Mahdi, rejected any suggestion that a pardon had been granted. 'Certain preachers who claim to speak in the name of religion step forward to create a false sense of heroism for themselves — at our expense," Abdul Fattah said. Referring to ongoing reports of negotiations, he added, 'Tallal's blood will not become merchandise in a negotiation bazaar." Abdul Fattah questioned the legitimacy of the claims made on behalf of the Grand Mufti, asking pointedly, 'Who authorised them, when, and on what basis?" He reiterated that under Yemeni law, a death sentence can only be reversed if the victim's family accepts blood money — a decision his family has not yet made. 'If any decision is to be made, we are the ones who will make it," he stated firmly. Condemning attempts to distort the gravity of the crime, he reminded the public of the brutal nature of the act: 'At the expense of a pure body that was unjustly slaughtered, mutilated, torn apart, and thrown into a water tank as if it were nothing!" Nimisha Priya, a nurse from Kerala, was convicted in 2020 for the murder of Talal Abdo Mahdi in 2017. As per Yemeni Shariah law, the family of the victim holds the authority to decide on pardoning the convict in exchange for blood money. Despite rising speculation, the Mahdi family insists no such decision has been taken and continues to demand full enforcement of the qisas verdict. view comments First Published: July 29, 2025, 12:05 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
