Moroccan NGO urges Spain to reinstate driver's license recognition
The Association of Moroccan Immigrant Workers in Spain (ATIM) has recently called for the mutual recognition of driver's licenses between Spain and Morocco to be reactivated, based on an agreement that has been in place since 2004. The organization said the issue is currently being discussed by the Spanish and Moroccan ministries.
«We hope that after the summer, a clear solution will be found to restart the license exchange or create a new cooperation framework», ATIM said.
They want the mutual recognition to start again immediately, without any new tests or exams. They also ask for an official order from Spain's traffic authority (DGT) and for unfair fines against Moroccan drivers acting in good faith to be canceled.
ATIM pointed out that, according to media reports, the DGT still treats Moroccan residents in Spain as if they don't have valid licenses, often fining them 500 euros. At the same time, Moroccan tourists are allowed to drive using their licenses from Morocco.
Because of this, ATIM criticized what they call a «contradictory policy» that hurts thousands of families, especially farm workers and people who depend on driving for their jobs. They say this is unfair discrimination against Moroccans who have been asking for a solution for years.
«While the two countries work on a solution, it's wrong to keep punishing families who are already suffering», the NGO added. They say this issue needs a quick political and official fix, not stricter rules that unfairly target the Moroccan community in Spain.

Mohamed Taamouti, Director of Economic Studies at Bank Al Mahghrib, stressed the significant efforts Morocco made in the investment sector, noting that Morocco allocates about 30% of its GDP to investment. The number is compared to a global average of about 25.2%, demonstrating a clear commitment to developing and strengthening economic and social infrastructure. Investment, accelerated growth, and job creation are major challenges for both developed and developing countries, Taamouti said. For his part, the director of Studies and Financial Forecast Adil Hidane emphasized the importance of a good business climate to achieve sustainable economic growth, stressing the central role of investment in both the public and private sectors. Morocco has made significant progress in improving the business climate in recent years, Hidane said, highlighting King Mohammed VI's vision that has enabled the progress of the industry and raised investment attractiveness as a national priority. Among the sectors Morocco is boosting is the automotive industry. Earlier this month, Minister Mezzour said that the country's goal is to increase production to reach 107,000 electric vehicles by the end of 2025. He said that Morocco's automotive production stands at 700,000 vehicles, with an ambition to produce one million vehicles by the end of the year.
