Succession plan hovers over Roger Goodell's contract situation
When making more than $60 million per year, it's hard for anyone to have a bad week. Still, last week was not ideal for Commissioner Roger Goodell.
Beyond having two of his pet projects fail to muster sufficient owner support (tush push ban and playoff seeding changes), Goodell's latest contract extension wasn't finalized.
There was at least one report that it would be. However, no vote was taken on Goodell's contract.
In a conversation with John Ourand of Puck, ESPN.com's Seth Wickersham said that an extension will happen — but that owners want Goodell to focus on a succession plan.
'Owners would like to have a better sense of the bench,' Wickersham told Ourand.
The problem is that there isn't much of a bench. And, frankly, there's been a trend in recent years that, once an in-house name emerges as a potentially viable candidate to become the next commissioner, the person ends up not sticking around much longer.
From Dean Blandino to Chris Halpin to Tod Leiweke to Maryann Turcke, they came, they saw, and they were gone long before they could conquer.
At this point, there's a generally-accepted belief in league circles that the folks who end up being long-term high-level executives at 345 Park Avenue are not regarded by the captain as viable candidates to take the helm.
Of course there's a Game of Thrones/Succession-style drama at play here. There's too much money and power riding on the job.
For Goodell, who has privately said there's no way he'll still be working when he's 80, he's only 14 years away from blowing out a full four score of candles. He has perfected the craft. He knows the personalities. He (usually) gets what he wants.
Where else would he make the kind of money he makes and (perhaps as importantly) wield the kind of power he wields? His only career objective was to become Commissioner of the NFL. He achieved the goal 19 years ago. For the dog who chased the car, caught it, and is now surfing on the hood, why stop?
Still, the owners need to be ready for life after Goodell. The longer they aren't, the more they need Goodell to not go.

Cowboys star Dak Prescott announces birth of second child with endearing social media post: 'Thank you God!'
Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott and fiancée Sarah Jane Ramos announced the birth of their second child on social media Saturday. The NFL star shared an endearing post on Instagram to announce the birth of their second daughter, Aurora Rayne, who was born May 22. "Thank You God! Welcome, Aurora Rayne! May 22, 2025. God is Great," the caption of his post said. "I love you @sarahjane and the Family we've created." Ramos responded to his post saying, "I love you and our sweet girls more than anything!" She posted her own carousel of photos to Instagram, adding she is "so beyond grateful and in love" with their family of four. The couple first became parents when they welcomed their daughter Margaret Jane Rose in February 2024. Later that year, in October, Prescott got down on one knee when the two were golfing together. They have remained relatively private about their personal life but were first linked together in September 2023. Prescott became the highest-paid quarterback in the NFL last season when the Cowboys signed him a four-year, $240 million contract extension. He missed the final nine games last season with a torn hamstring. He finished the season throwing for 1,978 yards, 11 touchdowns and eight interceptions. ‘I'm Not Convinced' Former NFL Exec Delivers Blunt Assessment of Caleb Williams
'I'm Not Convinced' Former NFL Exec Delivers Blunt Assessment of Caleb Williams originally appeared on Athlon Sports. After a season filled with flashes of promise and frustrating inconsistency, expectations remain sky-high for Caleb Williams as he enters his second year in Chicago. Despite the ups and downs, the former No. 1 pick managed to break the Bears' rookie records for both passing yards and passing touchdowns—a testament to his talent and upside. Now with a new head coach in Ben Johnson and a new offensive coordinator in Declan Doyle, the Bears are hoping a reset will bring more consistency to their young quarterback. Advertisement Still, not everyone is sold. One former NFL executive in particular has voiced serious concerns. Mike Tannenbaum, a former general manager and current ESPN football analyst, made headlines on a recent appearance on Get Up, ESPN's weekday morning show, when he was asked directly: 'Is Caleb Williams the quarterback to bring the Bears back to glory?' Captured by Cham Sura on YouTube, Tannenbaum was candid in his evaluation: 'I am not… [convinced]. I work with Ben Johnson… the new head coach of the Bears. He is going to be a rule-based, disciplined play caller and coach.' 'When you have 68 sacks… you have to bear some of that responsibility.' 'No team has done more for their quarterback in this offseason than the Bears. We'll see if he gets better, but I am concerned by his lack of discipline and his fundamentals.' ESPN insider Dan Graziano, however, took a more measured stance: 'The word 'convinced' is a tricky one here... we don't have enough data on Caleb Williams in the NFL to be convinced one way or the other.' Now under the direction of head coach Ben Johnson and offensive coordinator Declan Doyle, the Bears are hoping for a true fresh start. Johnson, who spent the previous two seasons as offensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions, played a pivotal role in transforming their offense into one of the league's most productive and creative units. Caleb WilliamsGetty Images That proven track record adds optimism that he can bring similar success to Chicago's rebuild. With a strong draft class that includes dynamic tight end Colston Loveland and explosive wideout Luther Burden III, the Bears have surrounded Williams with talent. If he can capitalize on that support, year two could become a defining chapter in his development. ESPN breaks down trade rumors surrounding Falcons TE Kyle Pitts
Atlanta Falcons tight end Kyle Pitts has been the subject of trade rumors over the last few days. With the former No. 4 overall pick entering the final year of his rookie contract, multiple teams have reportedly reached out to the Falcons to check Pitts' availability. On Friday, NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported that Atlanta is seeking at least a Day 2 pick as compensation for the 24-year-old. ESPN's Jeremy Fowler added some additional context on Saturday. Advertisement "If Atlanta gets the right kind of a deal for Kyle Pitts, it very well could come together," said Fowler. "I don't think it's a situation where they're aggressively shopping him but it appears, talking to some other teams that think Atlanta is at least open to the possibility and Pitts might be as well." Fowler went on to explain that while Pitts is open to a trade, he's still loves Atlanta and isn't requesting to be moved. "I'm told he loves Atlanta," continued Fowler. "This is not a situation where he's requesting a trade. But if he has a chance to go to maybe a better offense where he's more featured -- he's kind of a third or fourth wheel in Atlanta -- could be something that he's open to." The Falcons probably aren't desperate to move Pitts unless they get an offer they can't refuse. Pitts lived up to massive expectations as a rookie, racking up over 1,000 receiving yards, but he struggled to match that production over the last three seasons. Advertisement Tight ends need the ball to make an impact, and Pitts hasn't been featured as much since Matt Ryan was still in Atlanta. The fifth-year tight end failed to develop chemistry with former Falcons quarterbacks Desmond Ridder, Marcus Mariota and Taylor Heinicke. The 2024 season was supposed to be different for Pitts due to veteran Kirk Cousins taking over at quarterback, but Cousins' production was wildly inconsistent. 2025 might be Pitts' last shot to prove he can be a difference maker on offense. Falcons offensive coordinator Zac Robinson is still high on the young tight end and expects big things from him this season. "I'm expecting Kyle to take a big jump," said Robinson. "You know, Year 2 two of the system. Year 2 of understanding what we're trying to do offensively. All those things that come with it, so expecting a lot of good things from Kyle. He knows what he needs to work on with the details, some of the fundamentals and techniques." Advertisement Pitts has recorded 196 catches for 2,651 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns since entering the league in 2021.
