Native court reforms in Sabah must uphold indigenous rights, says MP
Welcoming the state government's decision to review the law, Libaran MP Datuk Suhaimi Nasir said reforms must focus on strengthening the Native Court's jurisdiction over customary matters such as inheritance, marriage, and native land.
"The appointments of Native Court chiefs and judges must be carried out transparently, free from political interference, and based on merit as well as a deep understanding of indigenous customs," he said.
Without sufficient budget and support, he warned, any new enactment risks remaining on paper.
"The Native Courts must be equipped with qualified personnel, proper facilities, and ongoing training to function effectively," said Suhaimi.
He added that reform efforts must include open consultations with indigenous community representatives, village chiefs, and grassroots leaders who truly understand the realities on the ground.
He also advised against using the reform as a political tool during festive seasons like Kaamatan, stating that Sabah Umno will closely monitor the process to ensure it benefits the indigenous population and not just serve as political capital.
"Do not change the name and neglect the function," he said.

Kota Kinabalu: The Barisan Nasional (BN)-Pakatan Harapan (PH) cooperation in Sabah is not a desperate response to any political crisis, but a strategic move to ensure long-term stability for the State, says Libaran MP Datuk Suhaimi Nasir. 'Politics is not about who pats each other on the back today, but about who truly has the capacity to lead Sabah forward,' said Suhaimi, who is also Sabah Umno information Chief. He was responding to Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) Chairman Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor's announcement on Sunday that GRS would be working with PH to face the coming 17th state election (PRN17). Suhaimi said the collaboration is not a 'political lifeline' for any party but the result of careful discussions aimed at building a stable and inclusive government. 'BN Sabah is not a mere complement to any political coalition. We are not a second option. We are a team that is ready to lead this state, equipped with proven experience, solid organisational structure and real capacity,' he said in a statement. BN Sabah not a backup, but ready to lead — Suhaimi
Suhaimi KOTA KINABALU (July 27): Barisan Nasional (BN) Sabah is not a second option in the state's political landscape but a force ready to lead with proven capacity, said Libaran Member of Parliament and Sabah Umno Information Chief Datuk Suhaimi Nasir. In a firm statement issued on Sunday, Suhaimi stressed that the cooperation between BN and Pakatan Harapan (PH) was not born out of crisis or political desperation, but through deliberate, strategic discussions aimed at ensuring long-term stability in Sabah. 'Politics is not about who pats each other on the back today, but about who truly has the capacity to lead Sabah forward,' he said. He added that the BN-PH cooperation was never intended as a political lifeline for any party. Instead, it was forged with a clear objective — to establish a stable, inclusive, and people-centric government ahead of the upcoming 17th Sabah state election (PRN17). 'BN Sabah is not a mere complement to any political coalition. We are not a second option. We are a team ready to lead this state, equipped with proven experience, solid organisational structure, and real capacity,' Suhaimi stated. He explained that the ongoing political negotiations between BN Sabah and PH partners are part of their election preparations and are not driven by personal or partisan agendas. 'Since the beginning, BN Sabah has consistently emphasised the need to form a government that is truly stable, inclusive, and focused on the people — not one that depends on temporary arrangements or political manoeuvring,' he said. Suhaimi's remarks are seen as a clear signal of BN Sabah's intention to play a leading role in shaping the state's political future, as parties begin positioning themselves ahead of PRN17.
