Walkertown man faces upgraded charges after fatal crash on I-77 South: NCSHP
STATESVILLE, N.C. (WGHP) — The North Carolina State Highway Patrol arrested and charged a man after two people were killed in a crash on 1-77 South this month, and his charges have now been upgraded.
At 10:10 p.m. on April 19, the NCSHP responded to a fatal crash on I-77 South near mile marker 32.
A 2006 Ford F-250 was traveling south on I-77 when it struck a southbound 2023 Kia Sportage, causing both vehicles to travel off the right side of the road and hit a guardrail. This caused the Kia to overturn.
The driver of the Kia, Jessica Lyndsay Horton, 47, and a passenger, Patricia Marie Osorno, 47, both of Mooresville, were ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene.
The driver of the Ford, Benjamin Wesley Overton, 31, of Walkertown, was not injured.
The investigation revealed excessive speed and impairment as contributing factors to the crash, and Overton was initially charged with:
driving while impaired
careless and reckless driving
two counts of felony death by vehicle
driving while license revoked
He received a $2.5 million bond and was taken to the Iredell County Detention Center.
His charges were upgraded. He is now charged with two counts of aggravated felony death by vehicle and two counts of second-degree murder.
FOX8 learned Overton has a history of driving while intoxicated in Forsyth County.
Court documents show his last offense was in December 2021.
Before that, he was charged with a DWI in February 2014 and December 2014.
That's a total of three times he's been convicted of a DWI.
Outside of the driving offenses, Overton has also faced several other charges. The most recent was in September 2022.
He was charged with purchasing a firearm by someone on probation and a violation of a protective order.
He was also charged with larceny after breaking and entering in September 2022.
His parole was supposed to end for those charges from 2022 on May 4, 2025.

Police said the electric dirt bike was not legal to ride in the roadway and lacked legally required "visibility equipment," including a white front headlight and red rear reflectors or lights. The operator of the bike was not wearing a helmet. Police believe the lack of equipment was a major contributing factor to the biker's injuries.

MPD: False carjacking report leads to two arrests
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A driver who claimed he was carjacked early Saturday morning was charged with making a false report after police determined he made up the story. Edwin Blandon Moren, 45, allegedly told officers that two men in a white sedan pulled him out of his Ford F-150 at Macon and Highland and drove off in the vehicle. He said they also took his cell phone, cash, and credit cards. Where did 100,000 registered vehicles go in Shelby County? The Ford pickup was spotted a couple of hours later in a parking lot on Summer Avenue, and police arrested a woman who jumped out of the vehicle and tried to run away. Investigators said Moreno later admitted he had picked up a woman on Summer and went to a motel with her. He said that while he was in the shower, she took his wallet and drove off in his truck. Adrienne Campbell, 26, was charged with theft of property and evading arrest and is being held on a $25,000 bond. Court records show Campbell was arrested twice in 2024 for similar crimes. MPD: Home burglarized while suspects were live on Facebook In one case, she was accused of stealing a car from a female friend, and in another case, from a man who had given her a ride. MISSING: Anna and Ariana Mullin
DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — The Wayne County Sheriff's Office in Indiana is asking the public to help locate a woman and her granddaughter. According to the sheriff's office, Ariana Mullin, 3, and Anna Mullin, 66, have not been seen since June 4. The sheriff's office says investigators believe Anna did not comply with a court order and allegedly took the 3-year-old. 'The situation stems from a court-ordered custody arrangement that directed the child be turned over to the custodial parent,' said WCSO. 'However, the child has not been returned, and her current whereabouts are unknown.' Anna is 5-foot 5-inches, 140 pounds and has brown eyes. She also wears glasses. Ariana is 3-foot and 40 pounds. The 3-year-old has red hair and blue eyes. The 66-year-old is believed to be driving a maroon Ford F-150 pickup truck with Indiana license plate CG3920.
