WI vs AUS, 4th T20I: Australia beats West Indies by three wickets

The Hindu27-07-2025
Cameron Green hit an unbeaten 55 and Josh Inglis added 51 to lift Australia to a three-wicket win over the West Indies on Saturday in the fourth match of their T20I series.
West Indies was 205 for nine after being sent to bat first after the visitor won the toss, but took five wickets after the midpoint to keep the pressure on Australia chasing 206 to win.
The Aussies seized a 4-0 lead in the five-match series and can complete a sweep by winning Monday's finale at Warner Park.
Green struck his half-century off 35 balls with three sixes and three fours while Inglis had one six and 10 fours in 30 balls, and Glenn Maxwell had 47 runs off 18 balls, hitting six sixes and a four.
But a night after Tim David bashed Australia's fastest T20I century off only 37 balls, he was rested from the Aussie lineup, and the chase had some tense moments.
Australia's Mitchell Marsh was out lbw for a second-ball duck from West Indies left-arm fast-medium pace bowler Jediah Blades.
Inglis entered to partner with Maxwell but flew out to deep backwards square, caught by Sherfane Rutherford off a ball from Romario Shepherd to start the seventh over, leaving the Aussies on 66 for two.

The visitor reached 129 for two at the drinks break, but on the next ball to start the 11th over, Maxwell was caught by Jason Holder at long on from a Akeal Hosein delivery.
Blades bowled Mitchell Owen for two thanks to Rutherford's deep cover grab, and two balls later, Blades got his third wicket, sending off Cooper Connolly for a duck on Holder's mid-off catch; the Aussies were stuck on 134 for five.
Holder took Aaron Hardie for 23 on a long off catch by Shimron Hetmyer to open the 17th over with the Aussies still 21 runs from victory.
A drive by Green deflected off Shepherd's fingers and into the stumps of Xavier Bartlett out of his ground, his seventh wicket gone for nine and the Aussies two runs from victory.
Green, however, scored runs off the next two deliveries, and Sean Abbott pushed Australia across the line, scoring the final run with four balls to spare.
Aussie fielding solid
West Indies managed only a top score of 31 as Aussie fielders shone.
Bartlett bowled out Brandon King for 18 when he chipped out midwicket to Hardie and removed Shai Hope for 10 after Maxwell made a diving catch mid-on.
Maxwell made a one-handed grab to retire Roston Chase for nil off a Hardie delivery, leaving the West Indies on 42 for three only one ball into the fifth over.
Rutherford went out for 31 when caught by Marsh at backward point off a nice delivery from Adam Zampa to make it 67 for four.
Owen made a diving catch at deep backward point to retire Hetmyer on 16.
Maxwell struck again for the seventh wicket, flicking the ball before going over the boundary so Green could make the catch and send off Shepherd on 28.
Green then caught Matthew Forde for 15 to put the West Indies on 184 for eight.
Rain hit with four balls remaining, but after a 55-minute delay, the host scored its final two runs.

South Africa's Ryan Rickelton hoping to seal opening slot for T20 World Cup 2026

South Africa's dynamic batter Ryan Rickelton has his sights firmly set on the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026, with the left-hander hoping to use the upcoming T20I series against Australia as a platform to secure his spot at the top of the Proteas batting 29-year-old, who made his international debut in 2023, has made steady progress across formats for South Africa and is now eyeing consistency in the shortest format. With the Proteas set to play 11 T20Is this calendar year, Rickelton sees this phase as a crucial window to stake his still trying to establish myself in the T20I side but I don't think there'll be any expectation for me to change anything that I've been doing in these last two years," Rickelton told reporters ahead of the series. "It's just an opportunity for me to hopefully claim that opening spot for this South African side, going into the World Cup and further on past that."Rickelton, who has earned a reputation for aggressive starts in domestic and franchise cricket, believes his natural game fits well with the team's current blueprint."The way the team is structured fits the mould of how they want me to play too, so I'm pretty comfortable with what's required," he added. "I am always looking to land that first punch and get the side off to a good start no matter who's alongside me at the top."Fresh off the high of being crowned ICC World Test Champions at Lord's, the Proteas are now shifting gears as they prepare for a rigorous white-ball schedule. South Africa host Australia for three T20Is and three ODIs before heading to England and India later in the year – an itinerary Rickelton believes will be instrumental in fine-tuning their T20 World Cup plans."If you look at the fixtures lined up for the T20 World Cup, we've got some big competition and some big rivals," Rickelton said. "If we can put a good foot forward and play quite well and match what we want to try and replicate in a few months' time, especially against quality opposition, that's really important to the team and the individuals as well."South Africa have not beaten Australia in a bilateral T20I series since 2016, and Rickelton sees the upcoming contests – starting July 10 in Darwin – as both a rare opportunity and a vital step toward their 2026 ambitions."We spoke about it as a group, we have an opportunity to try and win a series in Australia, which doesn't come around that often," he said. "We're looking forward to obviously cementing our own places and playing well for South Africa."With competition for top-order spots intensifying and the countdown to the T20 World Cup in the sub-continent well underway, Rickelton's performances over the coming months could prove decisive – both for him and for South Africa's white-ball aspirations.- EndsMust Watch

Rickelton Eyeing AUS Vs SA T20Is As An 'Opportunity To Claim Opening Spot'

Last Updated: South Africa's T20I transition sees Quinton de Kock, Temba Bavuma and Reeza Hendricks absent. Ryan Rickelton and Lhuan-dre Pretorius may lead the top order against Australia. With Quinton de Kock, Temba Bavuma, and Reeza Hendricks absent, South Africa is gearing up for a fresh start at the top order in T20Is. Despite no official confirmation on de Kock's T20I retirement or the futures of Hendricks and Bavuma, the team is clearly in transition. Leading this change could be Ryan Rickelton and Lhuan-dre Pretorius. Both Rickelton and Pretorius are left-handed wicketkeepers. Rickelton had a standout season in Tests and ODIs for South Africa and participated in his first Indian Premier League (IPL) earlier this year. 'I'm still trying to establish myself in the T20 side but I don't think there'll be any expectation for me to change anything that I've been doing in these last two years," Rickelton said. 'It's just an opportunity for me to hopefully claim that opening spot for this South African side, going into the World Cup and further on past that," he added. South Africa is scheduled to play three T20Is against Australia starting August 10, with regular captain Aiden Markram returning to bolster the top order, alongside the experienced Rassie van der Dussen in the middle. Rickelton believes their presence will allow him the freedom to express himself. 'The way the team is structured fits the mould of how they want me to play too, so I'm pretty comfortable with what's required," he said. 'I am always looking to land that first punch and get the side off to a good start no matter who's alongside me at the top," he noted. What's Next For Ryan Rickelton? Rickelton, along with Markram, Tristan Stubbs, Marco Jansen, and Kagiso Rabada, was rested during the recent tri-series in Zimbabwe. However, that break is over, and the team now faces an intense eight-month stretch of cricket, including tours, World Cups, and franchise leagues. The road ahead is demanding, with South Africa heading to Australia first, followed by a white-ball series in England, and then the start of their World Test Championship (WTC) title defence in Pakistan. This will be followed by a full tour of India, the SA20, a brief home series against the West Indies, and finally, the T20 World Cup. After that, many players will head straight into the IPL, extending their schedule to nearly 10 continuous months of cricket. Rickelton, who opted out of playing in the Major League Cricket (MLC) this year, is learning to manage workload and stay fit through a packed season. 'This was my first IPL year and it's long three months in India which can really stretch you, mentally more than anything," he said. 'I would still like to play leagues when the opportunity comes along and next year there's a break after the IPL so there's some space in between," he added. 'Once you get to the groove of playing a lot of cricket, it can be really nice when you're playing quite well but it can also be quite dark if you're not playing too well. It's more trying to manage the space mentally. That's probably the balance that I'm trying to walk at the moment," he noted. Since being part of South Africa's WTC final-winning squad at Lord's in June, Rickelton has enjoyed a rare six-week break. In contrast, Pretorius has had a busy time, making his Test debut against Zimbabwe and scoring a century, while also being shuffled up and down the T20I batting order, from opener to No. 5 and back. 'I haven't been hitting the ball too well these last couple of days but I'm not too worried. We've played a lot of cricket this year already and it's not something that you just lose full stop. It will take a few more sessions for me to get going," he said. 'But I'm watching the rest of the guys, they're really hitting the ball quite nicely and you can see the guys that have been playing are moving a lot better than a few of the guys that have taken a little bit of time off," he added. The rest period is officially over now. South Africa begins a crucial phase under head coach Shukri Conrad, with two ICC tournaments and a new World Test Championship cycle on the horizon. 'If you look at the fixtures lined up for the T20 World Cup, we've got some big competition and some big rivals," Rickelton said, as quoted from ESPNcricinfo. 'If we can put a good foot forward and play quite well and match what we want to try and replicate in a few months' time, especially against quality opposition, that's really important to the team and the individuals as well. We spoke about it as a group, we have an opportunity to try and win a series in Australia, which doesn't come around that often, and we're looking forward to obviously cementing our own places and playing well for South Africa," he noted. Mohammed Siraj "Doesn't Get The Credit He Deserves": Sachin Tendulkar's Unfiltered Remark

Legendary India batter Sachin Tendulkar said he loves Mohammed Siraj's attitude, adding that the fast bowler doesn't get the credit he deserves. On day five of The Oval, Siraj picked a sensational 5-104 as India levelled the five-match series 2-2 with a six-run win over England. England had no answers to Siraj's accuracy, as he tore through the lower order with a burst of three wickets while conceding only nine runs in 25 balls on the fifth day. Fittingly, Siraj sealed victory for India by knocking over Gus Atkinson's off-stump to enter the rich Indian cricketing folklore. "Unbelievable. Superb approach. I love his attitude. I love the spring in his legs. For a fast bowler to be constantly in your face like that, no batsman will like it. And the approach he maintained until the end on the last day; I could also hear commentators saying he bowled around 90mph (145kph) on the last day, after having bowled more than 1,000 deliveries in the series. That shows his courage and big heart," said Tendulkar in a video on his Reddit account. Siraj also finished as the leading wicket-taker of the series with 23 wickets coming at an average of 32.43, while bowling a whopping 1113 deliveries. "The way he started on the last day was remarkable, and he has always been instrumental, playing a key role whenever we need him, whenever we want him to deliver that knockout punch. He's been able to do that consistently in the past, and so was the case in this series. The way he picked all those wickets and performed, he doesn't get the credit he deserves," added Tendulkar. Siraj became the standout bowler in a series where Jasprit Bumrah played only three games due to workload management, especially after sustaining a back injury in the Sydney Test against Australia in January this year. In three games against England, Bumrah picked 14 wickets, including two five-wicket hauls. Tendulkar came out in support of Bumrah, saying that the Test matches he missed was 'just a coincidence'. 'I know people are discussing a number of things – jo Tests khela nahi, voh hum jeete (India won the Tests he didn't feature in) and all that. To me, that's just a coincidence, to be honest.' 'Bumrah started really well, got five wickets in the first Test. He didn't play the second, but in the third and fourth innings again at Lord's, he took 5 wickets. So, out of 3 Tests he played, he has picked five wickets twice.' 'The quality of Bumrah is exceptional. It's unbelievable what he has been able to do so far. To me, he has been a consistent performer without any doubt. I would put him right at the top with anyone else,' concluded Tendulkar.
