Anwar cannot even utter Akmal's name
– PM Anwar Ibrahim admonishing MP Teresa Kok during the halal certification controversy
COMMENT | The prime minister chose to admonish Seputeh MP Teresa Kok for stirring the hornet's nest when she was just doing her job during the halal certification controversy last year.
But Anwar Ibrahim appears to be sitting on his hands while Umno Youth head honcho Dr Akmal Saleh uses race and religion in issues such as the KK Mart fiasco, weaponises the Jalur Gemilang against non-Malays, thumbs his nose at the state security apparatus and insults folks with disabilities.
Anwar, while wanting the authorities to take strong action, cannot even bring himself to utter Akmal's name or the name of the poor Chinese trader whom the Madani government victimised by way of Akmal, a member of this administration.
The police have called Akmal in, but as former law minister Zaid Ibrhaim said, he is one of the untouchables.

White sea of solidarity: Over 100,000 expected at Dataran Merdeka for Gaza on August 24
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 18 — Over 100,000 participants from across the country are expected to gather at Dataran Merdeka this Sunday for the 'Malam Himpunan dan Selawat — Malaysiaku Bersama Gaza', the highlight of the Sumud Nusantara Carnival 2025. The event, jointly organised by the Malaysian Consultative Council of Islamic Organisations (Mapim) and Cinta Gaza Malaysia (CGM), is held under the patronage of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, with the support of Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Mohd Na'im Mokhtar and Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa. Mapim chief executive officer Datuk Sani Araby, who is also the carnival director, said the gathering is especially meaningful as it coincides with the National Month celebration. 'We want Dataran Merdeka to become a sea of white as a symbol of Malaysian solidarity with the struggle in Gaza. 'As we celebrate independence, it is meaningful for us as a free nation to reflect on the suffering of our brothers and sisters in Gaza and Palestine and help them break free from the Zionist apartheid regime,' he said in a statement today. Meanwhile, CGM chief executive officer and Sumud Nusantara project director Nadir Al-Nuri said the gathering would amplify Malaysia's voice of solidarity on the world stage. 'It will also be translated into action through the Global Sumud Flotilla, with activists from 39 countries joining a peaceful mission to sail towards Gaza, similar to the Madleen and Handala vessels,' he said. The public is invited to attend with their families, dressed in white in solidarity with Gaza and Palestine, to join Maghrib prayers and solat hajat led by Sheikh Abdul Karim Al-Makki, followed by a religious lecture. The programme will culminate with a special address by the prime minister, the Sumud Nusantara Declaration for Gaza, the symbolic flag-off of the Sumud Nusantara Flotilla delegation, and the recitation of Qunut Nazilah. The three-day carnival from Aug 22 to 24 will also feature various attractions, including the VR Gaza Time Tunnel by Mapim, a hot air balloon show, Havoc Food Festival, exhibitions by various agencies, the launch of the 'Gaza 101' Malaysia Projects Compendium, Kids World Hall and film screenings on Gaza's struggle. Over 1,000 vehicles from across the country and eight foreign nations are also expected to join a solidarity convoy, carrying Palestinian flags to Dataran Merdeka in a rare display of unity in Malaysia. Public facilities, including prayer spaces, will be available, but attendees are advised to bring mats, prayer rugs and umbrellas, and are encouraged to use public transport for convenience and smooth traffic flow. — Bernama

'I'm not racist,' says Rayer amid Dewan Rakyat exchange
KUALA LUMPUR: Jelutong member of Parliament RSN Rayer has denied being racist following a heated exchange in the Dewan Rakyat last week during the debate on the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), Utusan Malaysia reported. The DAP MP said his comments had been misinterpreted after he questioned whether Pas could be considered a "Parti Ajaran Sesat" (deviant teaching party), a remark that drew strong reactions from Pas lawmakers. "I am not racist. Just look at my TikTok account, all communities receive allocations. "As a DAP MP, I represent a party that was not founded on racial lines. "DAP upholds the principles of social democracy and defends the rights of all communities. "We are 'colour blind' and always extend assistance to anyone in need," he said. Rayer said his remark was made in response to Marang MP Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang, who had claimed during the debate that Kuala Lumpur faced problems because it was led by DAP. "I was disappointed because I have always regarded Abdul Hadi as a respected leader who debates with solid arguments. "But his claim was baseless. "I rose and politely asked the Speaker, not to attack or insult anyone, but to respond. "I said, would you accept it if I called Pas a 'Parti Ajaran Sesat'? "I was merely quoting former Pagoh MP Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, who had once said the same thing," he said. Rayer said that he had no personal enmity with Pas, noting that the two parties once worked together under the Pakatan Rakyat coalition. "At the time, I was the Seri Delima assemblyman in Penang and had no issues with Pas. "In fact, I still keep and display a photograph of the late Pas spiritual leader, Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat, at my service centre in Jelutong. "Pas then was very different from today," he said. Responding to claims that he had been instructed to be confrontational in parliament, Rayer said his interjections were his own spontaneous reactions in defence of the government. "As a government MP, it is my duty to defend the government. "That was not something I was instructed to do. "My approach in parliament is different from how I am in my constituency," he said. Citing an example, Rayer said he interjected during the speech by Kota Baru MP Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan, who had alleged that the government was ignoring the welfare of the Indian community. "If I had not stood up, he would have continued with his incitement. "But when I interjected, it was misinterpreted as though I was trying to silence him. "Do we want to remain trapped in this 'silo mentality', with Indians in their way, Malays in theirs and Chinese in theirs? "If so, how can we build a truly inclusive and united future?" he said.
