Malaysia's maritime patrol aircraft project in Italy 60pct complete

KUALA LUMPUR: The construction of two maritime patrol aircraft (MPA) for Malaysia has reached 60 per cent completion.
Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said the aircraft, with a procurement value of RM899 million, are being built in Turin, Italy, and will significantly enhance the country's ability to monitor its vast maritime areas once completed.
"These aircraft will play an important role in safeguarding our national waters, especially in addressing threats such as smuggling, illegal fishing and encroachments," he said during a working visit to the facility involved in the project in Turin this week.
Khaled said the procurement reflects the government's commitment to strengthening national defence assets, particularly in improving maritime surveillance capabilities.
Once operational, the patrol aircraft will support enforcement agencies by providing real-time data and intelligence to ensure the security and sovereignty of Malaysia's maritime zones.
The Defence Ministry, in a statement, said the procurement of these aircraft is one of the country's key initiatives to bolster maritime defence, especially in conducting maritime air operations and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance.
The acquisition of the ATR-72 MPA from Leonardo S.p.A was formalised during the 16th Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition (Lima) in May 2023.
It was part of a broader strategy under the RMAF Capability Development Plan 2055, which envisions the procurement of six MPAs by 2035 in three phases.
"As a maritime nation situated at the crossroads of the Asia-Pacific and Indian Ocean regions, Malaysia needs to enhance its maritime domain awareness.
"These aircraft will enable us to conduct continuous aerial patrols over strategic waters such as the Straits of Malacca, the South China Sea and the Sulu Sea," the ministry said.
During the visit, Khaled met with Leonardo S.p.A's management to explore new areas of cooperation.
"This visit is a clear reflection of the government's responsibility to ensure high-value defence projects are completed according to schedule, specifications and quality," the ministry said.
It added that the visit also served to deepen bilateral defence ties between Malaysia and Italy, in line with the third pillar of Malaysia's Defence Strategic Framework, which emphasises credible partnerships to safeguard national security, regional stability and global peace.
Accompanying Khaled during the visit were Air Force chief General Tan Sri Mohd Asghar Khan Goriman Khan and Defence Ministry's deputy secretary-general (policy) Mohd Yani Daud.

Drone debris sparks small fire at Russian refinery

The Slavyansk oil refinery in Russia's Krasnodar region is privately owned and has a capacity of about 100,000 barrels per day. (EPA Images pic) KRASNODAR : A small fire ignited by debris from a destroyed drone was promptly doused at the Slavyansk oil refinery in Russia's region of Krasnodar, authorities said today. Russia's air defence units destroyed 46 Ukrainian drones overnight, the defence ministry said on Telegram, including five over the Krasnodar region. The ministry reports only drones downed, not the number launched by Ukraine. 'There are no casualties reported,' the administration said on the Telegram messaging app. 'The fire was promptly extinguished. Emergency and special services are working at the scene,' the administration said. A car caught fire at the refinery, the regional administration added in its post. Reuters was not able to independently verify the reports. There was no immediate comment from Ukraine, which says its strikes inside Russia aim to destroy infrastructure key to Moscow's war efforts, including energy facilities. The Slavyansk refinery is a private plant with a capacity of around 100,000 barrels per day, supplying fuel for both domestic use and export. 'The overnight Ukrainian drone attack also targeted Russia's southern region of Volgograd,' the regional governor said. 'Drone debris fell on a 16-story residential building in the city of Volgograd, forcing residents to leave their homes, the governor,' Andrei Bocharov, said on Telegram. The city of Volgograd is the administrative centre of the broader region of the same name. The Russian defence ministry said its units destroyed 11 drones overnight over Volgograd.

New row erupts between Israeli defence minister, army chief

Israel's military chief Eyal Zamir favours encircling Gaza City rather than conquering it. (AFP pic) JERUSALEM : Israel's defence minister today reprimanded the country's military chief over appointments made without his approval, as tensions simmered between the military and the executive ahead of a planned expansion of the war in Gaza. A statement from the defence minister Israel Katz's ministry said that deliberations conducted by chief of staff lieutenant-general Eyal Zamir on military appointments 'took place… without prior coordination or agreement' with the minister. The statement added that this was 'in violation of accepted procedure' and that Katz therefore 'does not intend to discuss or approve any of the appointments or names that were published'. In an army statement published shortly afterwards, Zamir responded that he was 'the sole authority authorised to appoint officers from the rank of colonel upwards'. 'The chief of staff makes the appointment decisions – after which the appointment is brought to the minister for approval,' the statement added. Tensions have been simmering for two weeks between the chief of staff and prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government over the next steps in the military operation in Gaza, aimed at freeing the remaining hostages and defeating Hamas. Israeli media reported that Zamir was opposed to a plan approved by the security cabinet on Friday to take control of all of densely populated Gaza City. Israeli media reported that Zamir favoured encircling Gaza's largest city, rather than conquering it. The Israeli army controls around 75% of the Palestinian territory which has been devastated by 22 months of war. Zamir, who was appointed in March after his predecessor was dismissed, said last week that he would continue expressing the military's position 'without fear, in a pragmatic, independent, and professional manner'. Katz meanwhile said that the army chief could 'express his views', but that the military would ultimately have to 'execute' any government decisions on Gaza.
