Kentucky Derby 2025: Baffert's return, and Journalism is the horse to watch
Previewing the 151st Kentucky Derby, focusing on Journalism's chances and Bob Baffert's return.
The 2025 Kentucky Derby favorite hasn't changed since the draw was announced and race week began, but the odds are shifting as the first leg of horse racing's Triple Crown approaches.
Journalism still has the best chance to win the 151st running of the Race for the Roses on Saturday, according to the Kentucky Derby's latest odds at KentuckyDerby.com. But there are several contenders lurking close behind as worthy challengers now that the 20-horse field is sorting itself out among gamblers with post positions settled.
Render Judgment, which has ties to late country music star Toby Keith, and American Promise are among the horses that have seen their odds improve this week. There are also several sleeper picks to emerge due to the fluctuating odds, most notably Burnham Square. Predictions for this year's race vary.
Here are the latest odds, notable favorites and potential sleepers for the 2025 Kentucky Derby, as well as information on how to watch Saturday's race:

BOB BAFFERT'S KENTUCKY DERBY RETURN: Why did decorated horse trainer serve 3-year suspension?
Kentucky Derby 2025 prediction: Sleeper picks
Ed De Rosa, Louisville Courier Journal: Chunk of Gold (36-1)
"Chunk of Gold changed tactics in the Louisiana Derby when jockey Jareth Loveberry sat a little closer to the pace. They won the battle — finishing ahead of all the front-runners — but lost the war to Tiztastic, who closed on the outside to get the top prize. Still, Chunk of Gold sold a dimension that day that could serve a purpose here."
Dan Wolken, USA TODAY: Luxor Cafe (15-1)
I'm going to take a bit of a different path here and pick Luxor Cafe. Watching his races from Japan, I think he is a super talent with a devastating turn of foot that many Derby winners have. Now, the quality of horses he was running against in Japan is a huge question. So is the transition to America all the external factors that come with shipping a horse halfway across the world. But Forever Young's performance last year showed that the quality of top Japanese horses is good enough now to win a Derby at some point. Maybe this year. I also expect Sovereignty to run a huge race, so that will probably be my exacta box.
Sloan Piva, Sporting News: Coal Battle (30-1)
"With five wins on dirt since last July and a strong third in the Arkansas Derby in late March, this horse has fierce acceleration out of the gate, impressive tactical versatility and awesome closing speed."
Jody Demling, CBS Sports: Burnham Square (23-1)
"Jockey Brian Hernandez Jr. is one of the top riders at Churchill Downs and he used his intimate knowledge of the grounds to help pilot Mystik Dan to a masterful win in the 2024 Kentucky Derby. ... Burnham Square was bred to handle this distance and he's one of the most proven closers in the field with come-from-behind wins in the Fountain of Youth Stakes and the Blue Grass Stakes."

Ben Roethlisberger believes 2025 will be Aaron Rodgers's last year

This year, Aaron Rodgers will become the latest successor to Ben Roethlisberger in Pittsburgh. And Roethlisberger believes it will be a one-year arrangement. 'I don't think he's got much more after this year,' Roethlisberger said on his Footbahlin with Ben Roethlisberger podcast, via Andrew Vasquez of USA Today. 'I think this might be it for him — personally. I have no reason — you could ask, 'Well, how do you know?' I don't know. I'm just guessing in terms of you coming off an Achilles [tear]. Coming off my elbow [injury], my first year back I felt like I was 100. I wasn't even — you don't realize you're not 100 until the next year when you are 100.' Rodgers started all 17 games in 2024, a year after suffering a torn Achilles tendon on the fourth play of the first game of the season. 'He's going to feel better, but it doesn't mean that he's going to have two or three years left,' Roethlisberger said. 'I think this might be his last go.' Roethlisberger is hardly going out on a limb. Not many quarterbacks have played deep into their 40s. Rodgers turns 42 in December. (Roethlisberger retired at 39.) While he hasn't said it, Rodgers's main objective seems to be authoring a final chapter that has a better ending than his two-year detour to New York. For him, making the playoffs would do the trick. For the Steelers, winning a playoff game seems to be the bare minimum to make the experiment a success. That's something the team didn't do in any of Roethlisberger's five final seasons in football — or in the three since he retired.

If you want leaderboard updates, scores, tee times, highlights and more from the second round, you've come to the right spot. U.S. Open 2025 leaderboard Here is the U.S. Open leaderboard. Second round at U.S. Open suspended with 13 golfers on the course It had been raining for about an hour but then some electricity moved into the area around Oakmont Country Club, and the USGA blew the horn with 13 golfers on the course. Noah Kent and Thorbjorn Olesen managed to finish but the third member of that threesome, Thriston Lawrence, had a four-footer left for par when the action was called. He pleaded his case to putt but he'll have to come back Saturday morning to officially finish his second round. Phil Mickelson comes up short of making the cut. Was this his last U.S. Open? Lefty needed a birdie on 18 for a 73 and get to 7 under to make the cut but he slid his putt by on the right side, barely missing and having to settle for par. This could be his final U.S. Open. His five-year exemption from winning the 2021 PGA Championship expired this year. On the 12th hole, after a not-so-great shot, he tomahawked his club down the fairway. About an hour later on the 17th hole, after not being happy with his tee shot, the smashed a U.S. Open tee box marker in half. Sam Burns posts strong 5-under 65 on Friday at Oakmont Burns has the clubhouse lead after signing for an amazingly low 65 in the second round of the U.S. Open. He's at 3 under overall, tied with J.J. Several of world's best golfers in danger of missing the cut at the U.S. Open Oakmont is racking up victims. Advertisement World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler is narrowly inside the cutline at 4 over, but there are several others among the best in the world rankings that could be sent home early. World No. 2 Rory McIlroy is the most notable of that group. After a 4-over 74 on Thursday, McIlroy stumbled out of the gate Friday, big time, making double bogeys on the first and third holes. He's 8 over, three shots off the 5-over cutline as of 2:40 p.m. ET. World No. 5 Justin Thomas is certain to be done after today, going 76-76 to finish the first two rounds at 12 over. World No. 12 Shane Lowry is suffering the same fate. He's 4 over through just three holes on Friday, and 13 over for the championship. Click here to see our live cut tracker. Sam Burns cards 65 to take early clubhouse lead on Friday at the U.S. Open Sam Burns is less than a week removed from losing a marathon playoff in the 2025 RBC Canadian Open. The 28-year-old from Louisiana finished 18 under and finished second to Ryan Fox, who beat him in four extra holes. Advertisement While probably disappointed in last week's result, Burns is carrying that stellar play into Oakmont, following up a first-round 72 with a 5-under 65 on Friday. Burns made six birdies and just one bogey and will head into the weekend likely in firm contention at 3 under. Victor Perez makes the first ace at the 2025 U.S. Open On Thursday, Patrick Reed's albatross dominated headlines as the best shot of the day. But France's Victor Perez has an early entry for shot of the day on Friday, and it's going to be tough to beat. Perez made a hole-in-one at the par-3 sixth during his second round at Oakmont, which was playing 192 yards. What's the weather at Oakmont? Viktor Hovland makes an eagle to get to 3 under After Brooks Koepka (see below) chipped in for birdie on No. 17, Viktor Hovland went one better with this fantastic chip-in for eagle, which put him at 3 under for the championship. Brooks Koepka posts three birdies on first eight holes It was an up-and-down morning for Brooks Koepka, who snapped a streak of 28 consecutive major championship rounds in which he finished outside the top 10 on the leaderboard when he shot a 68 on Thursday. Advertisement On Friday, Koepka opened with a bogey, then followed with consecutive birdies on Nos. 11 and 12 (he started on the back) and then added another bogey on No. 14. He then chipped in from the fringe on No. 17, however, to get back to 3 under for the championship. He made a bogey on 18, however, to fall back to 2 under.
