Baram Regatta roars back with faster boats, fresh thrills, cultural flair this Sept
MIRI (April 23): The iconic Baram Regatta in Marudi is set to return this year, featuring more powerful engines for power boat races and the debut of fibre longboats.
According to the main organising committee in its first meeting on Tuesday, the opening ceremony and main events are scheduled for Sept 20-21, while other side events will begin on Sept 18 onwards.
The rich cultural tapestry of Baram basin will be showcased on the first day of the event instead of the closing night to allow more people to experience and appreciate this rich heritage, it added.
Organising chairman Datuk Dr Penguang Manggil said while the opening and closing events for traditional paddling races are maintained, this year's Baram Regatta will be slightly different compared to previous years.
'We will be leaving out the less popular events to concentrate on the more popular events, like remote control boat racing, as the choppy Baram River waters are not conducive.
'The new additions include fibre longboat races, power boat racing with engine capacity cap raised from 30hp to 50hp—all of which will attract many people including those from Brunei and other parts of the state,' said the Marudi assemblyman.
'The roar and speed of the more powerful boats is expected to provide bigger thrill and excitement to spectators lining up the Baram River banks.'
Penguang, also Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government, said RM300,000 has been approved to spruce up the facilities, including roofing over the stage overlooking the Baram River and covering of walkways on the bank below Fort Hose to the town.
On a related matter, he said Marudi is expected to see a snail-crawl for traffic flow this year following the completion of the bridge across the Baram River last year, which allowed unfettered access to the town instead of reliance on ferry services previously.
'In the last edition, due to the extreme congestion, vehicles lined up from the ferry point to the Marudi Airport, waiting for their turn to cross the Baram River and return to Miri and other places.
'With a bigger influx of visitors to Marudi this year, the main committee has identified Marudi industrial mini-estate and other areas as possible sites for parking to help reduce bottled-neck congestion inside the town area,' he added.
Meanwhile the organiser is inviting members of the public to participate in the competition to pick the best event logo.

Judge Peter Yu handed down the conviction yesterday, saying Kamimura touched the interpreter in a caressing nature that implicitly carried a sexual undertone and had indecent intent. 'The defendant's acts are obviously disrespectful toward women,' Yu said. 'Such behaviour should be condemned.' In pleading for a lesser penalty, the defence said Kamimura previously had a promising future and paid a heavy price. After the verdict was announced, a few of Kamimura's fans wept in the courtroom. But Kamimura looked relieved and hugged his courtroom translator when the judge issued a fine of HK$15,000 (RM8,000) and no prison term. Vigneswaran told the guy: 'When one door slams shut, 10 others swing open.' A few weeks ago, news sites were abuzz about how 32-year-old Tinesh Sritharan was supposedly selected for National Geographic's prestigious Explorer program in Kenya. The young photographer was so excited, he slid into Senator Dato Sivarraajh Chandran's Instagram DMs to share his good news. He presented his 'acceptance letter' and emails that looked legit enough to fool anyone. Impressed by his story, Sivarraajh took him to meet the MIC president. The boss was thrilled to meet an ambitious young Malaysian Indian and decided to back him with RM15,000 for his trip to Kenya. MIC Still Has His Back Then National Geographic dropped the bombshell: the letter was fake. 'Look, if the kid got conned, we feel bad for him,' said Sivarraajh, adding that nobody should have their dreams messed with by scammers. But MIC isn't throwing the photographer under the bus – 'The scam is in the letter, not the kid,' the former Cameron Highlands MP explained. The advice was simple: don't let this setback kill your dreams. You're already in Kenya, mate. Make the most of it and come home with photos that'll make everyone proud. According to Sivarraajh, the MIC leader has no problem with the photographer continuing his work in Kenya, fake letter or not. Photographer Calls Out the Scam Professional photographer Syahrin Abd Aziz was one of the first to suspect something was amiss with the entire National Geographic story. He pointed out major red flags: the guy had to fund his own 'assignment,' his animal photos were actually taken at Zoo Negara, and nobody in Malaysia's tight-knit photography scene had ever heard of him. 'Getting an assignment from National Geographic isn't easy – you need a powerful portfolio and extensive experience,' Syahrin explained. He emphasised that National Geographic rarely works with newcomers, preferring established photographers who are already household names in the field of photojournalism. The photographer noted that when National Geographic assigns real assignments, they provide a representative and cover the costs – they don't require you to pay your own way. Nike Is Suing Edison Chen For Over RM500k For Breach Of Contract
It's not uncommon for brands to take legal action against celebrities, typically for damaging their reputation or breaching a contract. Recently, it was reported that footwear and apparel company Nike is suing former collaborator and Hong Kong star Edison Chen (陈冠希). On 12th August 2025 (Tuesday), reports emerged online alleging that Nike is suing Edison Chen for breach of contract. In a photo, allegedly of the court record, the company is seeking damages of US$126,615,000 (approximately RM534 million). However, recent reports have updated this figure, saying it was a clerical error and that the lawsuit is actually for a little over US$126,000 (approximately RM531,000). According to reports, the lawsuit accuses Edison and his company, Juice Los Angeles, of owing Nike US$126,615 for 'goods and services that Nike provided to Juice'. Edison was named in the lawsuit because he is the personal guarantor on the Juice account with Nike. He's also a resident of Los Angeles, where his company is based. However, there are no additional details on the case. Both Nike and Edison Chen have yet to speak on the lawsuit. However, contrary to popular belief, it appears the lawsuit has nothing to do with Edison partnering with Nike's competitor, Adidas. Edison and Nike had a long-standing relationship, dating back to 2006. Edison's streetwear brand Clot and Nike's Jordan brand have collaborated on numerous sneaker projects. The partnership ended in 2023, and a year later, Clot launched its first collaboration with Adidas Originals. Given the nearly 20-year history between Edison Chen and Nike, their 'breakup' was a surprise to many in the streetwear industry. It's not known why the partnership ended, but insiders suggest that the deal had run its course and was going to expire anyway. Meanwhile, Edison and Adidas have had three launches in 2025 alone. Earlier this month, Edison also teased the launch of a Clot x Adidas Anthony Edwards 1 sneaker. It's worth noting that the Edison Chen lawsuit comes right after Nike settled their lawsuit with custom footwear maker, The Shoe Surgeon, for unauthorised use of the brand's trademarks.
