Nike Is Suing Edison Chen For Over RM500k For Breach Of Contract
On 12th August 2025 (Tuesday), reports emerged online alleging that Nike is suing Edison Chen for breach of contract. In a photo, allegedly of the court record, the company is seeking damages of US$126,615,000 (approximately RM534 million). However, recent reports have updated this figure, saying it was a clerical error and that the lawsuit is actually for a little over US$126,000 (approximately RM531,000).
According to reports, the lawsuit accuses Edison and his company, Juice Los Angeles, of owing Nike US$126,615 for 'goods and services that Nike provided to Juice'. Edison was named in the lawsuit because he is the personal guarantor on the Juice account with Nike. He's also a resident of Los Angeles, where his company is based. However, there are no additional details on the case. Both Nike and Edison Chen have yet to speak on the lawsuit.
However, contrary to popular belief, it appears the lawsuit has nothing to do with Edison partnering with Nike's competitor, Adidas. Edison and Nike had a long-standing relationship, dating back to 2006. Edison's streetwear brand Clot and Nike's Jordan brand have collaborated on numerous sneaker projects. The partnership ended in 2023, and a year later, Clot launched its first collaboration with Adidas Originals.
Given the nearly 20-year history between Edison Chen and Nike, their 'breakup' was a surprise to many in the streetwear industry. It's not known why the partnership ended, but insiders suggest that the deal had run its course and was going to expire anyway. Meanwhile, Edison and Adidas have had three launches in 2025 alone. Earlier this month, Edison also teased the launch of a Clot x Adidas Anthony Edwards 1 sneaker.
It's worth noting that the Edison Chen lawsuit comes right after Nike settled their lawsuit with custom footwear maker, The Shoe Surgeon, for unauthorised use of the brand's trademarks. Only time will tell how this lawsuit will conclude, but we wish the best for both parties.

'Beautiful Girls' rapper Sean Kingston gets jail time in US$1 million fraud case
FORT LAUDERDALE: Sean Kingston, famous for his hit song "Beautiful Girls," was sentenced to three and a half years in jail in connection with a US$1 million fraud scheme that also involved his mother, reports said. According to CBS News, the Jamaican-American rapper and his mother, Janice Turner, were each convicted in March by a South Florida jury of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and four counts of wire fraud. The New York Times reported that a few months before the arrests, a company that sells high-end entertainment systems filed a suit against Kingston, accusing him of fraud and failing to pay for a 232-inch television and an advanced sound system installed in his home in September 2023. The company claimed that Kingston had promised to use his music industry connections to arrange promotional videos featuring Justin Bieber in exchange for a reduced down payment. However, the videos were never delivered. According to the lawsuit, Kingston had paid only US$30,000 of the US$115,000 owed for the entertainment setup. The case remains ongoing.

Thai lawmakers pass massive US$117bil budget to revive economy

The budget bill for the year starting Oct 1 was backed by 257 lawmakers in the 500-member House of Representatives late Friday, following a three-day debate. A total of 229 members opposed the spending plan. The vote will be a relief to investors in the Southeast Asian nation, by avoiding a repeat of the months-long deadlock over spending plans seen in 2019. The country faces a litany of problems, including political instability linked to the suspension of Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra; continued tensions with Cambodia which recently erupted into violent clashes; and a stiff 19% tariff on shipments to the US, Thailand's biggest export destination. Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira thanked the house for approving the budget and said the government will ensure the spending is efficient, transparent and delivers maximum benefit to the people. "I would like to assure that the policies, measures, and budget approved will be implemented in accordance with the designated objectives and plans,' Pichai said in a post on X. The government has defended a marginal increase in spending for the year starting October, and a projected budget deficit of 860 billion baht ($27 billion), or 4.3% of gross domestic product. Officials say the outlays are necessary given the increased risks to the economy from global trade uncertainties. The Senate will review the budget on Aug. 25-26, but analysts expect the spending plan to take effect on Oct. 1 as planned. The Constitutional Court will rule on Aug. 29 whether to disqualify Paetongtarn, amid allegations that she breached ethical standards in handling a border dispute with Cambodia. "Put together, these developments increase the odds that the 2026 budget could be passed before the conclusion of Paetongtarn's case, thereby removing the most significant headwind to growth as a result of the ongoing political crisis,' Citi Research said in a note to investors this week. More support is coming for the economy.
