Ozempic price slashed following Donald Trump's demands - will it impact the UK cost?

Yahoo3 hours ago
Diabetes patients in the US will now be able to purchase Ozempic for half its usual cost.
Novo Nordisk, a Danish pharmaceutical company, said on Monday that it would be providing the drug through its direct pharmacy service for $499 (£369) per month, instead of just under $1,000 per month.
The drug giant said it had made a deal with healthcare firm GoodRx to make Wegovy, its obesity drug, available at this price in over 70,000 pharmacies nationwide.
It comes after Novo Nordisk saw sales plummet last month, after competition ramped up in the US.
The company said the profit warning came as a result of 'persistent use' of compounded – or copycat – versions of its drugs, as well as 'slower-than-expected market expansion and competition'.
It has faced serious competition from Mounjaro, Eli Lilly's rival weight loss jab, as well as what it described as 'unsafe and unlawful mass compounding' in the market as weight loss and diabetes drugs have soared in popularity.
Ozempic and Wegovy both contain glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1). It works by stimulating insulin secretion, which is why it helps patients with type 2 diabetes, but it also signals fullness to the brain.
Wegovy only triggers the GLP-1 receptor in the brian but Mounjaro works on both GLP-1 and GIP receptors, which can lead to more weight loss.
In March, Novo Nordisk reduced the cost of Wegovy for cash-paying patients, but now people without health insurance will be able to purchase it for this price.
Trump's critique
The move comes just weeks after President Donald Trump criticised GLP-1 agonists for being more expensive in the US than in other countries, adding that he would 'slash the cost of prescription drugs' by 80 per cent.
Last month, Trump wrote to pharmaceutical leaders demanding that they 'negotiate harder with foreign freeloading nations'.
He said: 'increased revenues abroad must be repatriated to lower drug prices for American patients and taxpayers'.
He's since upped that number, saying he would cut drug prices up to '1,500 percent,' which is mathematically impossible without entering negative numbers.
He also said that European nations were 'unfairly shifting the cost burden onto American patients' by using their healthcare services to put pressure on US pharma companies to accept lower prices.
Novo Nordisk said that the price cut was unrelated to discussions with the US government.
Pfizer CEO Albert Boula has said he and other pharma companies are in talks about making their drugs available at a lower cost.
Will it impact the UK cost?
In the UK, patients can buy a four-week supply of Ozempic for between £119 and £190 from online pharmacies.
Novo Nordisk said it has no plans to rise UK prices, despite pressure from Trump.
In a statement, it said it would continue to focus 'on supporting patients, and we are committed to ensuring that our medicines are not only innovative but also accessible and affordable for those who need them most'.
However, last week, weight-loss drugmaker Eli Lilly said it would increase UK prices by as much as 170pc due to concerns about unfair pricing.
The company said obesity drug Mounjaro would rise in price from Sept 1 in order to address 'pricing inconsistencies compared to other developed countries, including in Europe'.
The company's weight-loss jab will cost between £133 and £330 per injection (depending on dosage) in the UK.
CheqUp, a weight-loss jab provider, reported that sales of Wegovy increased more than 500pc, following the Eli Lilly announcement.

Source: John Lamparski / Getty 'I almost lost my life,' admitted Love & Hip Hop: Miami alum Shay Johnson, recalling how heavy bleeding went unchecked for months. ' I thought I was just stressed, working too much. I was drinking, not eating right, and ignoring my body. Then I collapsed. Doctors found fibroids the size of grapefruits, and I needed a blood transfusion.' Now Johnson says she's cut back on alcohol, overhauled her diet, and prioritizes sleep. 'I can't keep living like I'm invincible. I've got a daughter now. My career's growing — I have to be here for her, and that starts with me taking care of me.' Her path to motherhood was paved with pain and heartbreak. After undergoing a myomectomy – the surgical removal of fibroids – she revealed: We care about your data. See our privacy policy. 'They didn't tell me I could never conceive vaginally because of the surgery —I cried on social media because I wanted that womanly experience. But I got my beautiful baby—and I want one more.' Transforming her struggle into purpose, Shay now champions women's health through her own wellness brand, The Healthy Hand , Fibroids affect 26 million American women, disproportionately impacting Black women. The Fibroid Fighters Foundation, created by Dr. Yan Katsnelson, works to end the epidemic of unnecessary hysterectomies and educate women about minimally invasive treatments like UFE. Every ten minutes in the U.S., twelve hysterectomies are performed—and shockingly, nine of them are unnecessary. Their efforts are part of a broader push to destigmatize fibroids and ensure women know all their options—not just the most invasive ones 'I found out about fibroids when I was pregnant with my daughter, Noelle,' Cynthia Bailey recalled. 'They just kept growing and growing. I had super heavy periods, bloating—I was always on the celebrity baby bump list for a child I wasn't pregnant with. I had a bunch of fibroid babies inside of me, and lipo can't help that.' Bailey eventually underwent UFE, a procedure that shrinks fibroids without surgery. 'Please make sure you always ask for UFE first,' she urged. 'A hysterectomy should always be the last resort.' Beyond advocating for women's health, Bailey is stepping into powerful new roles. Fresh off season 16 of The Real Housewives of Atlanta, she's filming a short drama titled Diamond where she plays a mother battling heroin addiction—her most challenging acting role yet. 'That's ridiculous. This should have been talked about in our families, our communities, on social media. Women deserve to know their options.' Johnson's first surgery, a myomectomy, allowed her to conceive her daughter—but left her devastated when she learned she could never give birth vaginally. Now single and focused on her wellness brand, The Healthy Hand, Johnson is filming new episodes of Love & Hip Hop and raising her daughter to be a boss. 'She just launched her own elderberry gummy line—I want to teach her business ethics young so she can take over when I'm gone.' 'When I found out it was 16 centimeters, I thought surgery was my only option. I didn't have insurance, I didn't know where to turn. They even wanted to put me on a menopause-inducing hormone, Lupron. I was terrified.' Then Fibroid Fighters stepped in. 'They answered every question, didn't rush me, and gave me hope—even about having kids someday,' she said. After undergoing UFE, she was back in the gym within a week. 'With surgery, you have to have a C-section. With embolization, you can give birth naturally. The recovery is night and day.' Sorbello is now competing on The Challenge: Vets vs. New Threats and hinted at a new Fox project premiering this fall. But she admits to one bad habit: 'I'm highly addicted to sugar. Fudge brownies are my crack,' she laughed. Dr. Yan Katsnelson's vision for Fibroid Fighters combines cutting-edge medical technology with patient-centered care. He aims to educate women on non-surgical options and reduce the link between fibroids and more serious health risks, including infertility and cardiovascular disease. With his foundation, he seeks to empower women to make informed decisions, improve outcomes, and prevent unnecessary hysterectomies. The evening concluded with an intimate concert featuring Tweet and fellow R&B powerhouse LaTocha of Xscape, leaving attendees inspired by both music and advocacy. As Dr. Katsnelson reminded the crowd, 'Knowledge is power, and awareness is the first step toward better health for every woman.' WeightWatchers Bets on Community Driving Growth in the GLP-1 Era

At a time when shedding pounds may be just a shot away, WeightWatchers is returning to its roots and its community to chart a new path forward. Fresh off a major restructuring, the 62-year-old grand dame of weight loss is finding its footing in a market that's more competitive than ever. Drugs like Novo Nordisk A/S 's Wegovy and Eli Lilly & Co. 's Zepbound help people shed up to 20% of their body weight in months, but offer little in the way of support when it comes to side effects, proper nutrition and insights on what to do when the shots aren't working.

Fido get fat? Ozempic for dogs could hit the market in three years

Life's ruff enough without the added challenge of getting your pudgy pup or tubby tabby to slim down. America's obesity crisis extends beyond humans — studies suggest that around 60% of dogs and cats nationwide are overweight. The consequences are far from fluffy. Those extra pounds can lead to serious health issues, sky-high vet bills and fewer years with your furry friend. Advertisement 5 Obesity is a major problem in pet health. Donald Pearsall / NY Post Design Enter the Ozempets era. Pharmaceutical companies are sniffing out new territory, tapping the same science behind blockbuster weight-loss drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy to develop similar treatments for pets. Advertisement One biotech firm, Okava, expects to roll out its animal-friendly version by the end of the decade — hoping to give your portly pooch or hefty house cat a chance at a leaner, longer life. A paw-scription for weight loss Traditionally, vets have pushed lifestyle changes to slim down pets, but getting Fido to cut back on treats isn't always a walk in the park. 'Caloric restriction, or fasting, is one of the most well-established interventions for extending the lifespan and improving metabolic health in dogs. But it is also one of the hardest to maintain,' Okava CEO Michael Klotsman said in a statement earlier this year. 5 Studies show that owners often underestimate their pet's weight issues, and many find it challenging to help them slim down. New Africa – Advertisement To address the problem, Okava and Vivani Medical are partnering to develop OKV-119, a long-acting implant designed to support weight loss in dogs and cats. Roughly the size of a standard tracking chip, the device delivers a steady dose of exenatide for up to six months. Similar to semaglutide and tirzepatide — the active ingredients in human drugs like Wegovy and Zepbound — exenatide imitates a hormone called GLP-1, which helps decrease appetite, increase feelings of fullness and slow digestion. Advertisement 'OKV-119 mimics many of the physiological effects of fasting … without requiring significant changes in feeding routines or disrupting the human-animal bond that often centers around food,' Klotsman explained. But don't worry — your pet won't go on hunger strike. 'What owners should expect to see is their pet eating appropriate portions without the previous food obsession,' Klotsman told The Guardian. 'They'll still eat regularly and show interest in meals, just without the excessive begging, scavenging or gulping behavior.' 5 Rather than the injectable format used in human GLP-1 drugs, Okava's pet-friendly product is an implant that lasts six months. mbruxelle – Early studies in cats showed promising results, with small doses of exenatide helping felines reduce their calorie intake and shed at least 5% of their body weight over 112 days. The trial is now being expanded to include dogs, and if successful, the companies aim to launch OKV-119 commercially by 2028 or 2029. That could be a game changer for the nation's pets, which are increasingly tipping the scales. In 2022, veterinarians classified 100 million dogs and cats as overweight or obese — up from 80 million just five years prior, according to the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention. Advertisement 5 Many owners frequently give treats, which can contribute to excess calorie intake in pets. natalialeb – That's not just extra fluff. Studies show that overweight dogs live up to 2.5 years less than their slimmer peers and often have a lower quality of life. Among cats, chubbier felines ages 8 to 12 face a 2.8 times higher mortality rate compared to their leaner counterparts, according to Manor Veterinary Hospital. Advertisement 'OKV-119 represents an additional tool for veterinarians treating pets where conventional approaches have been insufficient, similar to how GLP-1 therapies have provided new hope for human patients struggling with obesity despite their best efforts with diet and exercise,' Klotsman told The Guardian. Fur-ever young Americans love their pets. A recent poll found that 52% of dog owners consider their canine companion's health just as important as their own, while 41% say it's even more important. As drugmakers like Okava race to help animals live longer, healthier lives, research suggests our pets are already doing the same for us. 5 Pet ownership has been linked to a wide variety of health benefits in humans. Prapat – Advertisement Studies have found that owning a pet can ease stress, anxiety and other negative emotions while providing companionship that reduces loneliness and feelings of social isolation. There are physical perks, too. One study found that dog owners are 34% more likely to get the recommended 150 minutes of exercise per week than those without. Pet owners also tend to have lower blood pressure, cholesterol and triglyceride levels, giving their heart health a major boost, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Advertisement Taken together, experts say pets are a powerful longevity tool. A 2019 study found dog owners have a 24% lower risk of early death compared to non-owners. For those with prior heart attacks or strokes, the benefit jumps to 31%, according to the American Heart Association. Felines help as well. One study found that past or current cat owners were 37% less likely to die from a heart attack and 26% less likely to die from cardiovascular disease than non-owners.
