John Woo, Tsui Hark retrospective to play U.S., Canada through 2026
Aug. 4 (UPI) -- Shout! Studios announced Monday the Hong Kong Cinema Classics theatrical retrospective will continue in cities across the United States and Canada into 2026. The retrospective includes new 4K restorations of films by directors John Woo and Tsui Hark.
The Los Angeles retrospective began Saturday with a screening of Hard Boiled and continues through Aug. 30. John Woo spoke with UPI about the films in the series, which show how he used slow motion to emphasize elegance and beauty, like a dance scene.
Other films include Woo's The Killer, Bullet in the Head and the A Better Tomorrow trilogy, the first two directed by Woo and third by Hark. Hark's films City on Fire, Peking Opera Blues and A Chinese Ghost Story trilogy are also part of the series.
The series begins Sept. 1 in Amherst, Mass., Chicago, Columbus, Ohio and Ottowa and Toronto in Ontario, Canada. It opens Sept. 5 in Boston, Dallas and Houston, Detroit, San Francisco, St. Louis and Montreal, Quebec.
Austin, Texas opens the series Sept. 6. It plays Las Vegas Sept.10. Two theaters in Atlanta, Ga. open the series Sept. 12 and 18. It comes to Vancouver, British Columbia Sept. 19.
Charlotte, N.C. gets the series Sept. 23 and Pittsburg, Pa. Sept. 25. October and November brings the series to Denver, Nashville, Rochester, N.Y., Washington, D.C., and Portland, Ore. Additional dates are to be announced.
Shout! Studios, a Radial Entertainment Company, spearheaded the 4K restorations and new English subtitle translations when it obtained the rights to the Golden Princess catalog in January. Shout! partners with GKIDS on the theatrical releases.
Many of the films are available on video-on-demand for rental and purchase. Shout! will release physical 4K UHD on dates to be announced this year.

Olivia Morris wants 'Librarians' viewers to get lost in the silliness

"I absolutely adore all of my body of work. I love it. But, this is the first show that is complete escapism. There is nothing in it that is polarizing or upsetting," Morris, 28, told UPI in a recent Zoom interview. "That absolutely has its place on TV and film. I really think some of my favorite shows are very polarizing and important," she added. "We live in a time where it's really complicated right now and to be able to have anyone turn on the telly and watch a show about librarians saving the world and using a magic door -- if it brings them even a minute of relaxation and enjoyment and you can just get lost in the silliness -- I think that is so valuable." Morris plays Lysa, a scientist who inherits a castle in Belgrade that serves as annex to a library where supernatural artifacts from throughout history are stored. She teams up with Vikram (Callum McGowan), a 19th-century librarian, who is bewildered to find himself transported to 2025, Connor (Bluey Robinson), a conspiracy-theory podcaster, and Charlie (Jessica Green), a highly skilled fighting machine, to protect the world from powerful magic that has been mistakenly unleashed. In addition to being a fun watch, the family-friendly show also emphasizes the importance of teamwork and knowledge. "These fans are clever. They are honorary librarians and I think you can see that in the scripts that the writers, everybody involved, are so passionate," Morris said. "Some of the stuff my character has to say is bonkers," she added. "It is a real challenge to be able to say it as if she has said it a million times. I must look like a crazy person in my flat when I'm rehearsing my lines because I am determined to make it seem effortless and I hope it comes across as such." The actress said she wants viewers, especially young ones, to see a team who uses their brains and hearts, instead of physical might, to vanquish evil. "These characters are superheroes -- ones that are incredibly smart and incredibly empathetic," she said. Morris said Devlin -- whose credits include Independence Day and The Ark -- is a wonderful collaborator and always has time to discuss characters and story-lines. "He is so ready to meet [questions] with just as much curiosity and, as an actor, that is all you can ask for," she added. "Sometimes, you want to suggest something or you want to ask why we do a certain thing, especially because the world is so big. There have been three films and a whole series before us," she explained. "Dean Is the one that knows that better than anyone. So, to have him around on set and be able to pick his brain about making the show the best it can be is really, really amazing." The franchise started in 2004 with a trilogy of TV movies starring Noah Wyle. Wylie served as an executive producer on both The Next Chapter and The Librarians, a TV series that followed the movies and ran for four seasons from 2014 through 2017.

The film stars Michael Douglas, his son Cameron Douglas, Michael Stahl-David, David Morse and Walker Scobell. Michael Douglas plays William McKay, who tells his grandson (Scobell) a story. As a young man (Stahl-David), William reconnected with his father, Leo (Morse) in a father/son fishing competition. Cameron Douglas plays Leo's fishing guide, Cole. Ximena Romo plays Julia, a local doctor who catches young William's eye. Based on books by Bob Rich, Zach Dean and Rowdy Herrington wrote the screenplay. Roberto Sneider directed. Michael and Cameron Douglas previously played father and son in the 2003 film It Runs in the Family. Looking Through Water is in theaters Sept. 12.

Curtis portrays Ella's (Mackey) aunt Helen in the film -- a pillar of support for the woman who, at 34, has become governor, and is navigating a complicated relationship with her father (Harrelson). He shows up unexpectedly in the trailer released Monday, and Mackey storms off. "An idealistic young woman juggles her family and work life in a comedy about the people you love and how to survive them," an official synopsis reads. Jack Lowden, Kumail Nanjiani, Ayo Edebiri, Spike Fearn, Rebecca Hall, Julie Kavner, Becky Ann Baker, Joey Brooks and Albert Brooks also star. James L. Brooks directs from a script he wrote.
