Watch: Jamie Lee Curtis supports Emma Mackey in 'Ella McCay'
Aug. 4 (UPI) -- Jamie Lee Curtis, Emma Mackey and Woody Harrelson star in Ella McCay, which lands in theaters Dec. 12.
Curtis portrays Ella's (Mackey) aunt Helen in the film -- a pillar of support for the woman who, at 34, has become governor, and is navigating a complicated relationship with her father (Harrelson).
He shows up unexpectedly in the trailer released Monday, and Mackey storms off.
"An idealistic young woman juggles her family and work life in a comedy about the people you love and how to survive them," an official synopsis reads.
Jack Lowden, Kumail Nanjiani, Ayo Edebiri, Spike Fearn, Rebecca Hall, Julie Kavner, Becky Ann Baker, Joey Brooks and Albert Brooks also star.
James L. Brooks directs from a script he wrote.

'I've lived such a long life in a such a short amount of time, really, and I've learned so many lessons,' Lohan said. 'I'm really grateful for my life today and I'm really appreciative for it. I wouldn't really want to switch with anyone. I wouldn't give up a moment in my shoes with my son or my husband or my family.' At the film's world premiere at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood, Curtis explained the timing behind the sequel. 'There's math involved. You couldn't make this movie if Lindsay didn't have a teenage daughter, so she had to be old enough,' Curtis told TheWrap. 'And there's a nostalgia about the movie. In a time of turmoil, you cling to something nostalgic and familiar, so it's like comfort food.' 'I think 'Freaky Friday' is sort of cinema comfort food,' she added. Watch: Helen Mirren, Pierce Brosnan search for killer in 'Thursday Murder Club'

Mirren portrays Elizabeth, a retired spy, and member of the titular club. Mirren, former psychiatrist Ibrahim (Ben KIngsley), ex-union activist Ron (Pierce Brosnan) and former nurse Joyce (Celia Imrie) solve cold cases in their spare time, until a murder prompts them to solve "a real case." "What we need is a man, or a woman, on the inside," Ibrahim says in the trailer released Thursday. Their interest in the case seems to put the group in danger, however. Mirren receives flowers with a note telling her to "back off" in the trailer. The film is directed by Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone's Chris Columbus. Naomi Ackie, Daniel Mays, Henry Lloyd -Hughes, Tom Ellis, Jonathan Pryce, David Tennant, Paul Freeman, Geoff Bell, Richard E. Grant and Ingrid Oliver also star. The preview features a neon red rose with Doja Cat's name written in cursive along the stem. The track will appear on her upcoming, "pop-driven" album, Vie, which is due sometime in the fall, Billboard reports. The songstress previously shared on X that she had finished the album. "L'album est complete," her post reads in French. Her fans shared their excitement in the comments. "Album of the decade is coming," one social media user wrote.
