Scott Frost returns to UCF to find his motto still adorning the walls
ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Scott Frost returned to UCF to find a motto of his first tenure still adorning the walls eight years later. "Rise and conquer." Frost coached UCF to its best season in program history in 2017, when the undefeated Knights — snubbed from the four-team playoff — finished the season No. 6 in the AP poll as the only team to receive first-place votes alongside national champion Alabama. Now competing in the Big 12, and coming off back-to-back losing seasons, the Knights have turned to Frost to restore a culture they've been clinging onto since he left. 'Success is progress,' Frost said. 'Sometimes it happens slower than you want, sometimes it happens faster than you want. But we have a saying around here that is still up on the walls when I got back from the first time: 'Rise and conquer.'' Frost took over a winless UCF in 2015, turning an 0-12 team into a 13-0 juggernaut in two seasons. He then left for Nebraska, where he went 16-31 and was fired during his fifth season. "I think more than anything, he has just grown,' said McKenzie Milton, UCF's quarterbacks coach and a former player for Frost. 'That's what you can do with experiences in life. You can either grow from them or regress from them.' Finding a starting quarterback UCF went through four different starters under center last year and attacked the transfer portal to find an answer. As camp has progressed, it remains a three-player battle between FAU transfer Cam Fancher, Jacurri Brown, and Indiana transfer Tayven Jackson. 'It's definitely been a healthy competition,' Fancher said. 'I would say all the guys in the room are trying to push each other to be the best every day.' Brown, a junior, started three games last season for the Knights and nearly led them to an upset over Iowa State. Fancher has the most experience of the three, throwing for 5,294 yards in his career. Jackson has thrown for 1,300 yards in 16 career games. UCF's revamped roster When the Knights began their meetings in the spring and summer, the first task was to introduce everybody. As has become the norm in college football, when a coach departs a program, it begins a mass exodus. The Knights brought in nearly 70 players. It is a true fresh start for a team that finished 4-8 last season, its second in the Big 12. 'Almost a completely new team, not a lot of expectations, and I really like taking off from that place,' Frost said. 'I think our guys have a chip on their shoulders and get to work to prove to people they are better than what they are expecting.' John Walker's return Most of UCF's returning strength is along its defensive line. And the Knights should get a boost from defensive tackle John Walker's return. Walker missed all of the 2024 season with a meniscus tear after a standout freshman year in 2023, when he recorded 24 tackles and five tackles for loss. Strength on the ground Last year, UCF ranked fifth in the nation in rushing yards with 248.1 per game. A lot of that was on the back of RJ Harvey, the program's No. 2 all-time rusher who was selected in the second round of the NFL draft by the Denver Broncos. The Knights should still be good on the ground with returning back Myles Montgomery (293 yards, four total touchdowns last year), Western Michigan transfer Jaden Nixon (919 yards) and freshman Taevion Swint. UCF football schedule The Knights open the season Aug. 28 against Jacksonville State. They will face Bill Belichick and North Carolina in Orlando on Sept. 20. The schedule features a Big 12 opener at Kansas State and home games against Kansas, West Virginia, Houston and Oklahoma State. ___ Get poll alerts and updates on the AP Top 25 throughout the season. Sawyer Robertson and Baylor hope to build off 2024 finish that removed dismal feel around Dave Aranda's team
The feeling surrounding coach Dave Aranda and the Baylor Bears was getting downright dismal midway through last season. A six-game winning streak certainly changed the mood, and expectations, especially for quarterback Sawyer Robertson and other players who went through that extended slide. 'A lot of the guys that are here right now, and that had roles in last year's successful season, were also on that 3-9 team (in 2023) when nobody liked us,' Robertson said. 'So just keeping that chip on our shoulder is the main thing, and building off of how we ended last season.' Some now even consider Baylor, 8-5 last season after a bowl loss to LSU, a dark-horse contender for another Big 12 title. Before winning its final six regular-season games last year, Baylor was in a 5-17 tailspin that went back to a four-game losing streak at the end of 2022. That was just a season after being Big 12 champions, winning the Sugar Bowl and ranking fifth in the final Associated Press Top 25 poll in Aranda's second year. 'It's good to have the momentum, but we've got to realize it's a new season, new team,' fifth-year receiver Josh Cameron said. 'There's always going to be different dynamics.' Runners and catchers Baylor has the only 1,000-yard rusher returning in the Big 12 from last season, and has back its top two receivers. Bryson Washington ran for 1,029 yards and 12 touchdowns last season, and caught 22 passes. Along with Dawson Pendergrass (671 yards, six TDs), that gives Baylor one of the league's top running back duos. Cameron, a former walk-on, had 52 catches for 754 yards and 10 TDs last year. He was also the FBS leader averaging 20.7 yards on punt returns. 'Just kind of treat myself and carry myself as like, 'Man, I'm a walk-on.' So I'm still trying to fight for that spot. I'm still trying to fight for what's mine,' he said. 'That's like the main thing that's really keeps me going.' The Bears got a big boost when the NCAA cleared former Texas State transfer Ashtyn Hawkins (45 catches, 567 yards, five TDs) for another season with Baylor. Sawyer's journey Robertson spent two seasons at Mississippi State before transferring to Baylor, where he made four starts as a sophomore before taking over full-time in the third game last season. Even while hampered by a lower-body injury the second half of last season, he threw for 3,071 yards and 28 touchdowns with only eight interceptions. He added 230 yards and four TDs on the ground. Defensive focus While Jake Spavital goes into his second season as offensive coordinator, Aranda again will primarily focus on defense; he took the Baylor job after being the defensive coordinator for LSU's national title in 2019. The Bears ranked in the bottom half of the Big 12 last season in pretty much every defensive category. They allowed more than 30 points and 433 yards in conference games. 'I'm sure there is,' Aranda said when asked if there is pressure on the defense to take another step. 'When you win, you want to feel like you contributed to the win. So I think that kind of sums up that side of the ball.' Protecting up front Baylor returns four starters on the offensive line, a group with a lot of quality depth after that. 'It's the most depth of any team I've been a part of. ... There's dudes right behind them that are pushing them, trying to take that job,' Aranda said. 'I think their aggressiveness and their ability to communicate are the two things that separate them.' Power start Baylor will open the season against a team from another power conference for the first time since going to Wake Forest in 2009. The Bears host Auburn in a night opener Aug. 29, and a week later play at 16th-ranked team SMU, a playoff team last season in its first as an ACC member. Two of Baylor's first three Big 12 games are against defending champion No. 11 Arizona State and No. 17 Kansas State, though both are at home.

A new generation learns Rich Rodriguez's demanding coaching style at West Virginia
Rich Rodriguez won four Big East championships in seven seasons during his first stint at West Virginia, coming one haunting loss short of reaching college football's national championship game. Fans who endured mediocrity for the past six seasons under previous coach Neal Brown are counting on Rodriguez to resurrect the magic that produced double-digit wins in his final three seasons with the Mountaineers from 2005-07. That could take some time. If nothing else since Rodriguez was hired from Jacksonville State last December, they've had Sept. 13 circled, when West Virginia hosts archrival Pittsburgh, whose 13-9 win as a heavy underdog in Rodriguez's final game at WVU still stings. Two weeks later, Rodriguez left for Michigan. A huge roster turnover will make it challenging for Rodriguez to compete right away for a Big 12 championship. West Virginia hasn't won a title since joining the league in 2012 and hasn't been ranked since 2018, the last time it had back-to-back winning seasons. Soft play not tolerated So far, Rodriguez isn't happy about the depth at any position. 'I like my team, I just don't feel better about where we're at,' he said. 'We've got time.' Rodriguez has always used a no-huddle, up-tempo offense and is no less demanding now than when he first arrived at his alma mater in 2001. He has no tolerance for a lack of hard, physical play. Angered by such at a preseason practice, he stopped the drills and made his players run as punishment. 'Way too many moments of softness,' Rodriguez said. 'It can't ever be allowed. Up front, the O-line and D-line sometimes look like they're tango dancing instead of playing football. People say, 'You like to yell.' No, I like to win.' Offense potential Among the few returning players are the heart of the offense. Running back Jahiem White ran for 845 yards and seven scores as a sophomore in Brown's platoon system and could see his carries balloon behind a new offensive line in Rodriguez's run-based attack. The starting quarterback won't be revealed until the Aug. 30 season opener against Robert Morris. Nicco Marchiol won both of his 2024 starts and has played in 19 career games. He's competing with Texas A&M transfer Jaylen Henderson, who did not play last season, and Charlotte transfer Max Brown. 'We want to be the fastest team in America,' Marchiol said. 'This offense, I feel, fits me so well.' There are no returning receivers who had more than 300 yards a year ago. Sophomore Cam Vaughn had 48 catches for 803 yards and five TDs for Rodriguez at Jacksonville State. Legends return Rodriguez brought a pair of his most accomplished players back as assistant coaches. Pat White, who went 35-8 as a starting quarterback and won four bowl games from 2005-09, is an assistant under Rodriguez's son, quarterbacks coach Rhett Rodriguez. Noel Devine, second in school history with 5,761 all-purpose yards, is an offensive analyst and assistant running backs coach. Defense needs help West Virginia was among the Big 12's worst defenses last season. Defensive coordinator Zac Alley, who arrived from Oklahoma, has one returning player with limited starting experience: linebacker Reid Carrico. The schedule The Pitt game will be the last in the series until 2029. The Panthers have won two of three meetings since the rivalry resumed in 2022. West Virginia's league opener is Sept. 20 at Kansas. Among ranked teams, West Virginia plays No. 11 Arizona State and No. 23 Texas Tech to end the regular season but does not face No. 17 Kansas State or No. 22 Iowa State.
