More Than 1,000 Tata Steel Employees Supported Through Public Skills Funding

More than 1,000 employees who faced uncertain futures as a result of Tata Steel UK's decision to cease blast furnace steel production at Port Talbot have been supported to develop new skills through an innovative programme of local learning.
Funded initially by Welsh Government and since August 2024 by Medr, the new body responsible for funding and regulating the tertiary sector in Wales – the Personal Learning Account (PLA) scheme has seen significant uptake, in many cases quickly equipping learners with the skills for alternative employment.
Over the last academic year alone, the Tata Steel intervention PLAs have supported more than 800 Tata workers to undertake 995 PLA courses, with a further 215 learners undertaking well over 300 courses supported over recent months.
Ben, a 40 year old father of two teenagers had been working at Tata for 24 years, and is one of the former employees to benefit from a PLA. After identifying and completing multiple courses with the NPTC Group of Colleges, he has now found alternative employment.
Ben said:
'I picked the courses I did because they best suited me as a way of building on and reinforcing my experiences and Tata based training, which is not always officially accredited to external bodies. Having had limited success in the job market for the roles I was interested in, it's been a real eye-opener to see the impact the accreditations I've obtained have had.
'I've since had interest from multiple roles and companies and I've recently accepted a job on a major UK energy project not far from Port Talbot. I'm really enjoying it.'
Simon Pirotte, Chief Executive of Medr, said:
'Clearly, recent events in Port Talbot have required many employees and supply chain businesses to look afresh at their futures.
'What we, and Welsh Government before us, have managed to do by targeting funding to meet the specific needs of those able to access it, is to work with our colleges, training providers and local businesses to not only provide many with the optimism of alternative employment but in many cases deliver the skills which have helped deliver just that.
'I'm delighted to confirm that following its successes – this ringfenced intervention will continue into 2025/2026.'
Welsh Government Minister for Further and Higher Education Vikki Howells said:
'We made a commitment to the entire community in Port Talbot that they would not be left behind as a result of Tata Steel's decision to quickly change operations at the steelworks and these bespoke Personal Learning Accounts are an excellent example of how we, working with Medr and partners, are providing impactful interventions to re-skill and support people into alternative local employment.
'I'm very pleased to see Medr continue this intervention into 2026 and would encourage anyone eligible who has not yet accessed it to consider how it might be beneficial to them.'
The Personal Learning Account programme aims to help individuals to upskill or reskill in priority sectors, particularly those earning below the median gross annual figure for full-time adults working in Wales. By focusing on national priority sectors, the programme aims to enhance participants' career and earnings potential. The Tata Steel PLA removes some of the earning access requirements in order to make the support more tailored for the different needs of the workforce.
Individuals can apply either directly to the colleges or through Working Wales. All institutions will ensure they have a process in place to support Personal Learning Account applications, undertake the initial assessment and process enrolment.

Visitors are being invited to step back in time this summer to discover part of Newtown's rich industrial history at a free town attraction. Newtown Textile Museum on Commercial Street is offering events including Tapestry Tuesdays, watching a weaver in action or learning about the town's mail order pioneer Pryce Pryce Jones who supplied knickers to Queen Victoria. Weaver in residence Emma Allin-Thomas will show visitors how looms were used in the past. The museum has recreated how families lived in the early 19th century and there's a chance to dress up like Welsh weavers. Visitors can also see haberdashery and clog shops of the period and check out the museum's small shop which sells lots of locally sourced wool and weaving related items – from knitted birds to Welsh woven bags and pencil cases. The museum is open on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturdays until the end of September from 12pm to 4pm. Housed in an original handloom weaving factory, built in the 1830s, the volunteer-run museum brings to life Newtown's industrial heritage, showing how people lived and worked in the building and the processes involved in turning fleece into flannel. In addition, industries linked to wool – tanning, clog making and drapers' shops, including the Pryce Jones family who pioneered mail order – are also featured. Newtown was the centre for handloom weaving in the 1830s and the museum is the last of 82 such buildings remaining in anything like its original condition. The original handloom weaving factory comprised six back to back cottages with each having one room each on the ground and first floors to house up to 10 people. The two floors above, which ran the whole length of the building, housed the looms. The museum has an exhibition of photographs taken by John Owen, Newtown's first professional photographer. The photographs include some of the town and surrounding countryside as well as many portraits. The museum is a member of MWT Cymru, an independent organisation representing more than 600 tourism and hospitality businesses across Powys, Ceredigion and Southern Eryri (Snowdonia).

George & Jane Johns Directors of Audrey Johns Inspect Fabric With Alice Smith Sgrin House Designer – Neyland Pembrokeshire Dale-based Sgrinhouse has been selected to bring maritime-inspired fabric designs to its first major exhibition this autumn. Sgrinhouse, headed up by Alice Smith, will be bringing her own coastal-inspired, hand designed and hand printed work to the design exhibition Focus/25 On Design at Design Centre in Chelsea between 15 September and 16 October 2025. Alice gained a first class degree in Textile Design from Central Saint Martins in 2020. Alice said: 'The opportunity and platform to showcase my flair and skill to the world's top interior designers at 'Focus/25 On Design' feels well-deserved and exciting. It is Sgrinhouse's first major showcase and I know that my Welsh, marine-inspired showcase will be well received by the visiting interior designers who are seeking out new talent and unique designs for their clients. Visitors will see my avant-garde art combined with functionality on chairs, curtains, blinds and lampshades showcasing the fabrics' flexibility and useability.' Selected as one of 20+ pop-up House Guests, Alice's display features a fishing net structure – reflecting her coastal upbringing and inspiration – with her geometric patterns which are hand designed and printed in her own textile studio in coastal Dale. Neyland-based luxury soft furnishings manufacturer, Audrey Johns Ltd, is supporting Alice. Director George Johns said: 'We aim to nurture young, local talent by developing Alice's skills in our bespoke soft furnishings business. We are proudly bringing a touch of West Wales to Chelsea by incorporating Sgrinhouse's unique designs and luxury fabrics on our soft furnishings hand made in Neyland. Currently working as our fabric cutter, Alice has the potential to evolve into a fabric designer, and our support will help her advance her passion and skills.' Using only high quality, sustainable 100% linen woven in Ireland for her work, as well as using less toxic chemicals, Alice is very aware of what she puts down the drains in her seaside studio. 'Sgrinhouse aims to bring craft and modernity together in order to create beautiful, durable and timeless fabrics that do not put a burden on the environment or on people', she said. A pop up exhibition of Sgrinhouse's display will be available for all to visit at Audrey Johns Showroom in Neyland from Saturday 1 – Friday 14 November 2025.

Social Housing Associations Highlight Community Impact at Eisteddfod

Providing a quality home is essential to people's health and well-being and has wider positive impacts on the local community. That was one of the key discussion points at a discussion hosted by four north Wales social housing associations on the Eisteddfod Maes in Wrexham. The impact of the housing sector, the importance of the social value provided to local communities, supporting tenants through the cost of living crisis and community engagement were some of the other key topics discussed at the session. On the panel were Iwan Trefor Jones, Chief Executive of Adra; Osian Elis, Head of Supported Housing at North Wales Housing Association, Ffion Pittendreigh, Community Initiatives Manager at Grŵp Cynefin, Claire Morgan, Head of People from ClwydAlyn and Dafydd Gruffydd, Managing Director of Menter Môn. A panel spokesperson said: 'We were delighted to host such an important discussion on the Eisteddfod Maes. 'Social housing associations across north Wales provide a valuable role and have a significant impact on communities, providing quality homes and being significant employers. 'But we are more than simply housing associations- we provide a range of additional support to our customers. 'The cost of living crisis continues to have an impact on tenants right across the region and we have been providing a supporting role through helping direct tenants to advice and financial support. This helps their health and well-being in terms of maximising their income and providing practical energy efficiency advice and support to reduce increasing fuel bills. 'Community engagement is a significant element of our work. We work with a range of community groups to arrange educational, environmental and social events and initiatives to support our tenants. This is supported by projects to make our communities safer. 'The social housing sector also supports the local economy by awarding contracts to small and medium sized businesses, as well as larger contractors. This helps keep the pound local, supports local firms to employ local staff and helps protect the Welsh language and culture by providing quality jobs locally. 'But we cannot do this work alone and we have examples of great partnership within the housing sector regionally and nationally, but also with a wide range of public, voluntary and private sectors – all working together to support tenants and help our communities across north Wales to thrive.'
