BCCI brings in 'serious injury replacement' for domestic red-ball tournaments

New Indian Express19 hours ago
CHENNAI: WEEKS after India keeper-batter Rishabh Pant's injury during the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy in England, which had sparked debates about injury replacements, the BCCI has brought in a major rule change for the upcoming season of domestic cricket. Earlier in June, the ICC had said that replacement of players (domestic first-class cricket) for injuries will be trialled by full-member nations.
According to the BCCI's playing conditions prepared for the 2025-26 season which begins later this month, a "serious injury replacement" clause has been introduced where a player, who suffers an external injury, can be substituted with a like-for-like replacement. This change, which was briefed in a seminar to the umpires ahead of the season in Ahmedabad, is applicable only for multi-day red-ball tournaments and not white-ball cricket.
For the rule to be applied, the player would have had to sustain the injury during play and within the playing area — it includes external blow which results in fracture or deep cut or dislocation and so on — and is ruled out for the rest of the match. If that happens, the on-field umpires will have the authority to decide on the extent of the seriousness and whether the replacement is permitted; they can consult the match-referee and doctor on the ground. Once it is deemed so, the respective team manager can submit the request on a standard form as soon as possible for a like-for-like replacement. "The BCCI Match Referee should ordinarily approve a Serious Injury Replacement Request if the replacement is a like-for-like player whose inclusion will not excessively advantage his team for the remainder of the match. In assessing whether the nominated Serious Injury Replacement should be considered a like-for-like player, the BCCI Match Referee should consider the likely role that the seriously injured player would have played during the remainder of the match, and the normal role that would be performed by the nominated Serious Injury Replacement," the new playing condition reads.

BCCI Organises Special Fast Bowling Camp For Emerging Pacers At Centre Of Excellence

With the 2025/26 domestic season set to begin with the Duleep Trophy commencing on August 28, the BCCI said it recently conducted a fast bowling development camp at its Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru. As part of the camp, 22 fast bowlers – 14 targeted pacers and eight from the Under-19 group – went through an intensive program covering multiple aspects of fast bowling, skill and fitness wise. 'At the BCCI Centre of Excellence, fourteen Targeted and eight Under-19 fast bowlers took part in the Fast Bowling Development program, which has been a key initiative in the last few years.' 'In addition to the players going through fitness evaluations, they also worked on skill enhancement and tactical acumen building under the Tutelage of Mr. Troy Cooley, the Fast Bowling Coach at BCCI CoE, ensuring comprehensive preparation for the season ahead,' wrote the BCCI in a video posted on its 'X' account on Sunday. Also present in the camp were Simarjeet Singh, Tushar Deshpande, Suryansh Shedge, Gurjapneet Singh and Yudhvir Singh Charak. Interestingly, Suyash Sharma and Shreyas Iyer were also spotted, indicating that they were also a part of routine fitness testing at the CoE. It is also believed that Vijaykumar Vyshak, Khaleel Ahmed, Yash Thakur, and Raj Bawa were a part of the fast bowling camp at the CoE. From a larger perspective, the hope will be that the extensive fast bowling camp gets the Indian team more frontline fast-bowling options to support the likes of Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj and Mohammed Shami in any international cricket series or tournament in future.

How Jaiswal, Gill, Abhishek, Samson & Tilak Have Performed In T20Is?

The BCCI selectors are set to announce Asia Cup 2025 squad on August 19. Ahead of the squad announcement, here's a look at how India's top-order batters have performed in T20Is. Legendary Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma retired from T20Is on June 29, 2024, and since their retirement, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson and Tilak Varma have played in the top three for India in the shortest format of the game, and all of them made sure that they made the most of the opportunities that came their way to confirm their place in India's T20I squad. The BCCI selectors are set to announce India's squad for Asia Cup 2025 on Tuesday (August 19), and it will be interesting to see which of these five players manage to secure a place in India's squad. In all likelihood at most four players will be considered by the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee. Ahead of India's Asia Cup 2025 squad announcement, here's a look at how Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson and Tilak Varma have performed in T20Is for India overall and also since the retirement of Kohli and Rohit. In T20Is, Samson has played the most matches (42) between the five and has also scored the most runs (861) and centuries (3), but in terms of batting average, Tilak tops the list. The left-handed batter from Hyderabad has a batting average of 49.93. When it comes to strike rate, Abhishek is leading the race with 193.84, and he also holds the record of highest individual score (135) for India in T20Is. In terms of boundaries, Jaiswal has scored the most fours (81), and Samson tops the six chart with 49 maximums to his credit. In the 2024-25 season, which kicked off with a five-match series in Zimbabwe on July 6, 2025, Abhishek has played most matches (17) for Men in Blue and also scored the most runs (535), sixes (41) and fours (46). In his last T20I for India, which was played against England at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on February 2, 2025, he also scored 135 runs from just 54 balls as an opening batter, which is a record for the highest individual score for India in T20Is. However during that period, Tilak's average (82.60) is best for India and Samson scored most centuries (3). Numbers in T20Is (since July 2024) In the IPL 2025, the spotlight was on these five players, who were retained by their respective franchises, and they played some delightful knocks to catch everyone's attention. But unlike the 2024-25 season in T20Is, Gill and Jaiswal topped the batting charts. While Gill finished the season with more runs (650), fours (62) and a batting average (50.00) than the other four, Jaiswal scored the joint-most fifties (6) and sixes (28).
