Andrew Flintoff says part of him 'wished he had died' after Top Gear crash
The 47-year-old opens up about the harrowing experience in a new Disney+ documentary, which features stark images of his injuries and insights from an oral and maxillofacial surgeon who saw the aftermath firsthand.
At one stage, he says: "After the accident I didn't think I had it in me to get through. This sounds awful ... part of me wishes I'd been killed. Part of me thinks, I wish I'd died.
"I didn't want to kill myself ... I wouldn't mistake the two things.
"I was not wishing, I was just thinking, 'this would have been so much easier'.
"Now I try to take the attitude that the sun will come up tomorrow and my kids will still give me a hug. I'm probably in a better place now."
Reflecting on his recovery, the former England cricket captain says his then three-and-a-half-year-old son Preston "wouldn't come near me".
"I think it frightened him, my face, it frightened me. That was heartbreaking," he says in the film.
"I've got PTSD and I get anxious, for periods of time, I just find myself crying for no particular reason."
Flintoff also said that he relives the crash every night when he goes to bed and described the experience as a "vivid" movie.
"Even the memories of it are real, to the point where now I'm talking about it and I'm getting a bit jittery and I can feel the pain on the side of my face", he says.
"I can feel like a phantom pain. It's like a bit of a curse, really."
Former Top Gear presenter Flintoff was taken to hospital after he was hurt while filming the BBC motoring show at its test track at Dunsfold Aerodrome in Surrey in December 2022.
Recalling the accident, he says: "I thought I was dead because I was conscious but I couldn't see anything.
"I was thinking 'is that it?'".
He added: "My biggest fear was, I didn't think I had a face. I thought my face had come off. I was frightened to death."
The BBC "rested" Top Gear for the foreseeable future in 2023 after reaching a financial settlement with Flintoff, an agreement reportedly worth around £9million.
In the documentary Flintoff appears resentful about the entertainment culture he was involved in, likening it to his own injury-ravaged playing career.
"Everybody wants more. Everybody want to dig that bit deeper," he says.
Flintoff also speaks about his relationship with alcohol and experience with bulimia in the 90-minute documentary.
Comedian Jack Whitehall and actor and TV presenter James Corden, who appeared alongside him on A League Of Their Own, feature in the film, with Whitehall admitting that he was bulimic when he started his television career.
Speaking ahead of the documentary's premiere, Flintoff told the PA news agency that he been asked to do autobiographical-style pieces before "and always found it a bit embarrassing."
"The nice thing I suppose from a cricket sense is looking back on it, on a cricket career, which I don't tend to do to be honest, I tend to look forward," he said.
He added: "For me, I think people watch it and make their own minds up about me.
"I'm not trying to influence that. I've made it. It's gonna be out there, and it's up to people to decide. I'm sure there'll be some opinions."
Referencing the crash, he said: "It took a while, it's been hard. It's still a work in progress. I'm different but I'm all right."
Speaking about the future, he added: "I'm comfortable in what I'm doing now. I really enjoy it. You know, I do the odd TV job but I'm happy".
Flintoff led the Northern Superchargers in the most recent edition of The Hundred and in December 2024 he presented a festive version of darts-themed game show Bullseye on ITV.
Flintoff will premiere exclusively on Disney+ in the UK and Ireland on Friday April 25.

‘Now is the perfect time for the sequel': Lindsay Lohan on reprising her role in Freakier Friday
For millennials, there are a few hallmark films that have helped shape a generation, Freaky Friday being one of them. The 2003 family classic, starring Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis, tells the iconic story of a mother and her teenage daughter who swap bodies for one chaotic, event-filled weekday. Now, 22 years later, the cast has reunited for a sequel titled Freakier Friday, revisiting the film's themes from a very different stage in life. The story picks up with Lohan's character, Anna, now a mother to a teenage daughter of her own and a soon-to-be stepmother. In the sequel, Anna's daughter Harper, played by Julia Butters and her soon-to-be stepdaughter Lily Davies, portrayed by Sophia Hammons, join Anna and her mother Tess in a wild, quadruple body swap. 'I think now is the perfect time for the sequel because it's believable that Anna could be a young mom,' says Lohan, 39. 'It makes sense. We've had time to give space for Anna and allow this relationship to evolve in different ways.' Lohan, who was 16 when she first starred in Freaky Friday, is now a mother herself. She says her real-life experience of parenthood has helped her connect more deeply with her character. 'Now I'm a mom, so I can relate to Anna more in the life that she's living.' Lohan, who rose to fame in the 1998 remake of The Parent Trap and later starred in Mean Girls, says she was thrilled to reunite with Curtis on set. 'It's fantastic working with her. She brings such a light and energy that just radiates, it's fantastic to be around,' she says. 'Every moment has been a memory I'll cherish, especially with Jamie. We've grown not only as co-stars, but as friends, which is very special to me.' Oscar-winner Curtis echoes Lohan's enthusiasm. 'I got to celebrate her having a baby and all of the beautiful things that go along with her being a mom,' says Curtis. 'I've been able to participate in that, but I hadn't physically seen her, held her, or hugged her in quite a long time. It was really fun to be reminded of that lovely relationship we have.' Curtis, who won an Academy Award for Everything Everywhere All At Once, says the sequel is rooted in themes of empathy and connection. 'It's about mothers and daughters, grandmothers and granddaughters,' she says. 'It's about love, understanding, compassion, and empathy, realising through a body switch how hard life is for other people.' 'It's the universal story of seeing the world through somebody else's eyes. Life is hard for people, and we often take it for granted because, for many of us, life is pretty smooth and easy.' Other returning cast members include One Tree Hill's Chad Michael Murray, reprising his role as Anna's former love interest Jake, and NCIS actor Mark Harmon, returning as Tess's husband Ryan. When asked about stepping back into Jake's shoes, Murray says they had to figure out how his character would realistically fit into the updated story. 'It's a house of cards, you move one piece and the whole thing kind of crashes down with four people switching bodies. So we had to be really careful and deliberate with the choices we made,' says the 43-year-old actor. 'I went straight into analytics mode. We had to flesh out who Jake has been over the last 22 years. What's he been up to? Where's he gone? What's the funniest choice here? And that's where we went. Then it just became exciting from there.' Joining the cast for the sequel is The Good Place star Manny Jacinto, who plays Eric Reyes, Anna's fiancé and Lily's father. As a newcomer to the cast, the 37-year-old actor says he welcomed Lohan's experience and natural ease in the role. 'You can tell that she knows this world really well and this character really well,' he says. 'Once the cameras start rolling, she's Anna. I really appreciated that about her. She's super professional, fun to be with, and caring. She's a pro.' When asked about building a bond with Hammons, who plays his on-screen daughter, Jacinto shares how the team worked to establish their connection. 'We had a rehearsal process beforehand to get together and figure out a relationship, what happened to her mom, my previous wife. All credit to Nisha Ganatra (the director) for bringing us together to create that bond.' 'But also,' he adds, 'it's not hard to care for Sophia, because she's such a lovely human being.' Also joining the cast are Butters, who rose to fame in Once Upon A Time In Hollywood and Up Here star Hammons, who portray the teenage daughters at the centre of the film's multi-generational body swap. 'Harper's relationship with her mom is definitely one that I think almost every teenager can relate to,' says Butters, 16. 'You can have your misunderstandings, but at the end of the day, you're family.' Though their characters start off as rivals, Butters and Hammons formed an instant kinship on set. 'Instantly, we were just laughing,' says Hammons, 18. 'Nisha told us she could hear us from across the hall. It's so refreshing to meet people you click with, and she's one of those people.' Despite the adversarial nature of their characters, the actors say their real-life friendship made the experience fun. 'It's OK to jab at each other because we know we don't actually hate each other,' Hammons says. 'It's nice knowing that.' 'This movie is about family and change,' adds Lohan. 'We always experience changes in life. You never really know how that's going to go but at the end of the day, it's always going to be about your family. But she insists that, at the age of 37, it is less about satisfying previously unfulfilled desires and more about starting a new chapter with her own identity. Talking on Celebs Go Dating, which launched last night, Christine said: 'I feel like I'm a couple of steps away from being my new self and not 'Paddy's wife'. I'm coming out of the transition part. 'I am single and I absolutely do love women. I'd love to explore that more and I definitely see that's where I'm more comfortable.' She added: 'When I was a teenager, I dated men and women before I was married and now I'm really, really just enjoying spending time with women. 'For the last three years, I've only ever dated women. I was never heterosexual, I've never labelled myself anything other than Christine, to be honest.' Christine and Paddy, 51, married in 2011 and have three children together. She claims the Take Me Out and Top Gear presenter knew from the start of their relationship that she was attracted to women and did not take issue with it. 'It's my fault' Since announcing their shock split in July 2022, Christine has been romantically linked to singer Chelcee Grimes and model, rapper and DJ Roxxxan. Now, as part of Celebs Go Dating, she is opening up more than ever about her love life and how she perhaps wasn't as into men as it would have appeared. Christine McGuinness has taken a sly dig at ex-husband Paddy, claiming she now wants to date women so she can have 'a deeper connection.' On the show, during a dating masterclass with Too Hot To Handle hunk Louis Russell, she is challenged to use her body language to show she is interested in him. Christine is incredibly convincing, but says afterwards: 'I think it is a really good example of how I'm used to faking it.' Despite her confidence when it comes to flirting, Christine revealed some of the issues she has encountered with potential new partners. She said: 'I'm attracted to a masculine woman that's not trying to fit in and be like anyone else. 'I haven't dated an awful lot. I was married for a long time and it took me a while to even think about spending time with anyone. 'Luckily for me, the women I've spent time with over the last couple of years, I already knew them.' She added: 'The only thing I've struggled with is when I've really liked someone and they haven't got children and they want more. I just know that isn't for me. 'My time is actually very precious and valuable. If I am spending time with somebody, you should know you're important.' Christine also appeared to address rumours that Paddy had cheated during their marriage. 'In some ways, I still carry that feeling of it's my fault because I ended it. 'We had an amazing 15 years, we really did. The last couple of years, I think things weren't quite the same. 'I think once the respect isn't quite there any more, it's time to leave. It was the hardest decision I've ever made in my life and it forever will be.' Christine revealed it was Paddy's comedic charm that won her over when they met during a turbulent time in her life. She said: 'He wasn't as known as he is now. I was 19 when I met him. I went to an event where I was modelling. 'My ex husband was there, someone introduced us and we had a laugh. We kept in touch. I did [fancy him], he had a cheeky charm, he made me laugh and I wasn't in the best place. 'I was struggling with a lot of things. I struggled a lot as a teenager, I didn't really know where I fitted or where I belonged. "When I met my ex-husband it was just perfect timing. 'He made me laugh so much, it was easy, it was an easy relationship.' Christine was diagnosed with ADHD and autism in her late thirties, shortly after their children, 12-year-old twins Penelope and Leo, and Felicity, eight, were diagnosed with autism. The developmental conditions have affected her social interactions throughout her life — and that goes for dating, too. She explained: 'Autism affects me a lot with socialising, it takes me a while to relax and be open to get to know someone. 'They think I'm odd' 'I struggle to read people, so I never really know whether I've made a good impression or not. The thought of going on a date scares me so much. On how she has to take special care to plan dates, Christine said: 'It's just sensory issues, so I struggle with too much texture. It could be the smell, if it's too busy somewhere. 'So I try to avoid restaurants unless I've been there before. 'I think people just think I'm a bit odd or that I have got an eating disorder of some sort. 'It's that first bit of feeling different, but I want someone who accepts all of that, and is OK with that.' And Christine reckons there is no better place to find love than the E4 dating show. She said: 'It's all brand new to me, but I'm in the best place, I'm excited for it. 'I've got to take a deep breath and just dive in. I can't be single for the rest of my life.' Other famous faces on the Celebs Go Dating line-up are Love Islander Olivia Hawkins, Atomic Kitten Kerry Katona, The Chase quizzer Mark Labbett, S Club singer Jon Lee, comic Donna Preston and Made In Chelsea lothario Sam Prince. 'With Leanne, although she's presenting more fem, I know there's a lot of dominance in her. I'm really torn. Leanne isn't my usual type, she's more feminine, quite glamorous. I'd like to see more of her masculine side, which I'm pretty sure is in there.' The show is likely to make for uncomfortable viewing for Paddy as Christine has already divulged a few things that may feel like a needle to her ex-husband. Before the show aired, she admitted: 'I can just have a deeper connection with a woman. I like someone who knows what they want and isn't playing games.'
