He did finish his time with the Blues with a goal in the hammering of Beal Betis in the Europa Conference final.
But, according to David Ornstein, he is now leaving Chelsea to head back to United.
There was a clause in his loan deal that meant Todd Boehly's team had to sign him permanently.
But after failing to agree terms on him staying, he will go to Old Trafford, for now.
Chelsea are understood to have paid a £5 million penalty to United.
The 25-year-old will now explore his options in the Premier League and Europe over his next move.
It is understood he is not in Red Devils manager Ruben Amorim's plans for the 2025-26 Premier League season.
According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, he is still set to leave United this summer.
He has been made available by the club for a move away, with the funds made reinvested in the squad.
But, for now, the club are stuck with his £300,000-a-week wages, until he leaves.

And he will still have hopes of playing for England again in the future.

He scored just three goals in 31 Premier League appearance for Chelsea during his loan.
There was hopes he would stay on and restart his career, but they failed to materialise.
Sancho joined United in the summer of 2021 for around £71 million from Borussia Dortmund.
However, he failed to live up to the huge transfer fee, scoring nine times in 58 league appearances.
He was then loaned back to Dortmund last year, where he bagged twice in 14.
His Chelsea loan came about at the start of last season, but he never truly hit the heights they hoped.

Chelsea have hit a major stumbling block in their bid to sign Alejandro Garnacho from Manchester United. The Blues are keen to bring Garnacho to Stamford Bridge this summer after the Argentina winger was placed in Ruben Amorim's bomb squad. Amorim told Garnacho at the end of last season to find a new club after being left fuming by comments he and his brother made following the Europa League final. The United boss also grew frustrated with Garnacho's performances on the pitch and had already criticised his output in training earlier in the season. Garnacho accepts his Old Trafford career is over but wants to remain in the Premier League and play for a Champions League club. That has made Chelsea the favourites to secure his signature and Garnacho has already agreed personal terms with the west Londoners. But Garnacho may be forced to look elsewhere for his next club as Chelsea and Manchester United are still £20m apart in terms of their valuations for the player. Despite his presence in Amorim's bomb squad, United are holding out for £50m for Garnacho, once one of the most highly-rated players in the Premier League. The problem, however, is that Chelsea value Garnacho at £30m based on a bid made by Bayer Leverkusen during the January transfer window. This revelation from The Telegraph means Manchester United will either have to slash their asking price or hope Chelsea reconsider and submit a bid more to their liking. Given Garnacho's desire to move to Stamford Bridge, he will hope his current and possible future club can meet in the middle and agree a deal before the transfer deadline. Chelsea have spent another £250m this summer, bolstering Enzo Maresca's squad with the likes of Joao Pedro, Liam Delap, Jamie Gittens and Jorrel Hato. The Conference League champions and Club World Cup holders are still in talks with RB Leipzig over a deal for Netherlands international Xavi Simons. 'I don't see Alejandro Garnacho as a great fit at Chelsea,' ex-Stamford Bridge star Pat Nevin told football betting site BetVictor. 'Chelsea might do it to make money, but is he going to come and light up Chelsea more than Pedro Neto, whose professional attitude, his work rate he's given for the team has been absolutely fantastic? 'There's a whole bunch of other players in that position. Jamie Gittens has come in, Chelsea also have Estevao from Brazil with a lot of expectation, how many players do you need there? Premier League 2025-26 preview No 17: Sunderland
Guardian writers' predicted position: 19th (NB: this is not necessarily Louise Taylor's prediction but the average of our writers' tips) Last season's position: 4th in the Championship Spending heavily is no guarantee of Premier League survival – just ask Ipswich – but promoted Sunderland appear to have invested pretty shrewdly – spending about £132m on their 11 signings to date. The all-important central midfield department contains real ability in the shape of the gifted Enzo Le Fée, whose loan from Roma has turned into a formal transfer, the Arsenal and Bayer Leverkusen old boy Granit Xhaka and the highly rated £30m Senegal and former Strasbourg midfielder Habib Diarra. The experienced left-back Reinildo played Champions League football for Atlético Madrid last season and the Chelsea loanee striker Marc Guiu comes highly recommended. Even so last season's star, Jobe Bellingham, now at Borussia Dortmund, will be missed and the manager, Régis Le Bris, faces quite a challenge in blending so many newcomers into a cohesive unit. The left-sided Paraguay central defender Omar Alderete – who finalised his £10.4m move from Getafe on Tuesday morning – looks a smart addition, but disappointing pre-season results reflect a squad who possibly still barely recognise each other if they pass on the street. If Sunderland are not quite copying Nottingham Forest, who spent £142m on 21 players after being promoted in 2022, they would be very happy to emulate Forest and ensure Premier League survival before starting to thrive. Re-establishing themselves in the top tier after an eight-year absence will be tough but the club are certainly throwing everything at the challenge. Stadium of Light regulars will hope first-team roles are found for much-loved players of last season's promotion including the striker Wilson Isidor and, above all, the talented local-born midfielder Chris Rigg. Harmony off the pitch and unity on it were formidably strong last term; can that glorious spirit be recreated at a time when a series of playoff winners seem set for the exit or the bench? The 49-year-old Le Bris ended his first season on Wearside by choreographing Sunderland's dramatic Wembley triumph against Sheffield United in May's playoff final. A former Rennes and Laval defender, the Frenchman holds a doctorate in physiology and biomechanics and a diploma in the mental training of elite athletes. He spent a decade as a youth coach at Lorient in his native Brittany before taking charge of the first team in 2022, with his love of trigonometry underpinning a coaching philosophy that sees football as being all about triangles. Le Bris began learning English, almost from scratch, the same year. He has just signed a lucrative, long-term contract. He has presided over a strategy of recruiting gifted, if raw, young players from across the world. The successful implementation has been masterminded by the sporting director, Kristjaan Speakman. The latter has been joined this summer by the former Nice and Roma sporting director Florent Ghisolfi, who has assumed the same role and has been restocking the squad. The club's gradual gentrification continues with the Michelin-starred chef Tommy Banks opening a decidedly upmarket restaurant, Banks on the Wear, at the 49,000-capacity Stadium of Light. The much decorated Xhaka, the 32-year-old Switzerland captain and former Arsenal central midfielder, has joined for a fee that could reach £17m after a successful stint at Bayer Leverkusen. 'I feel I'm ready to help Sunderland with my experience but also with quality as well,' he said. His recruitment constitutes quite a statement because it is a significant deviation from the board's policy of acquiring promising youngsters with high resale potential. The intensity of Xhaka's tempo-setting game should appeal to fans and the raucous Stadium of Light looks a perfect stage for his well-calibrated passing range and committed brand of leadership. After scoring six goals (all in the Conference League) in 16 first-team appearances for Chelsea Guiu arrives on a season's loan. The talk in west London is that the former Barcelona forward could prove as good as Cole Palmer and Sunderland fought off considerable opposition to borrow the 19-year-old for a season. 'I see myself as a powerful striker who can make a big difference on and off the ball,' he said. 'I pride myself on being a natural goalscorer. This year at Sunderland is a huge opportunity for me.'
