Robot performs realistic surgery ‘with 100% accuracy'

In a 'major leap' towards using more robots in operating theatres, a machine trained on the videos of surgeries was able to precisely work on removing a gallbladder.
The robot operated with the expertise of a skilled human surgeon, according to Johns Hopkins University researchers in the US, even during unexpected scenarios typical in real-life medical emergencies.
The robot was watched as it performed a lengthy phase of a gallbladder removal on a life-like patient.
It was able to respond to and learn from voice commands from the team, just like a novice surgeon working with a mentor.
Overall, there were 17 tasks in the surgery, the robot had to identify certain ducts and arteries and grab them precisely, strategically place clips, and sever parts with scissors.
It was also able to adapt even when dye was introduced which changed the appearance of the organs and tissue.
Associate professor in mechanical engineering, Axel Krieger, said: 'This advancement moves us from robots that can execute specific surgical tasks to robots that truly understand surgical procedures.
'This is a critical distinction that brings us significantly closer to clinically viable autonomous surgical systems that can work in the messy, unpredictable reality of actual patient care.'
The work received federal government funding and was published in the journal Science Robotics.
Back in 2022, a robot performed the first autonomous robotic surgery on a pig.
However, it required specially marked tissue, operated in a highly controlled environment, and followed a rigid, pre-determined surgical plan.
Mr Krieger said that phase was like teaching a robot to drive along a carefully mapped route.
But the new system, he said, was 'like teaching a robot to navigate any road, in any condition, responding intelligently to whatever it encounters.'
He added: 'To me it really shows that it's possible to perform complex surgical procedures autonomously.'
The new system, which uses the same machine learning architecture that powers ChatGPT, also adapts to a patient's anatomical features in real-time and works to correct itself.
It can respond to spoken commands such as 'grab the gallbladder head' or 'move the left arm a bit to the left', and then learns from that feedback.
Ji Woong Kim, a former postdoctoral researcher at Johns Hopkins who is now at Stanford University, said: 'This work represents a major leap from prior efforts because it tackles some of the fundamental barriers to deploying autonomous surgical robots in the real world.
'Our work shows that AI models can be made reliable enough for surgical autonomy – something that once felt far-off but is now demonstrably viable.'
Although the robot took longer to perform the work than a human surgeon, the results were comparable to an expert surgeon, researchers said.
Next, the team will train and test the system on more types of surgeries.
Reacting to the findings, Nuha Yassin, consultant colorectal surgeon and council member and lead for the future of surgery, robotics, and digital surgery at the Royal College of Surgeons of England (RCS England) said: 'It's always exciting to see new developments in surgical innovation, especially in areas like robotics and digital surgery.
'That said, the real test will be how safely and effectively the findings of this study can be translated into human trials.
'We need to make sure that progress doesn't come at the expense of patient safety. An additional focus is training our current and future generations as a whole, but also in technology and digital literacy.
'As interest in robotic and digital surgery continues to grow, we're committed to supporting that progress whilst focusing on safe implementation and training, through our guidance on robotic-assisted surgery and surgical innovation – while keeping equity of access and safety for our patients at the heart and centre.'

It's the revolutionary new technology that is transforming the world of work. Generative artificial intelligence (AI) creates, summarises and stores reams of data and documents in seconds, saving workers valuable time and effort, and companies lots of money. But as the old saying goes, you don't get something for nothing. As the uncontrolled and unapproved use of unvetted AI tools such as ChatGPT and Copilot soars, so too does the risk that company secrets or sensitive personal information such as salaries or health records are being unwittingly leaked. This hidden and largely unreported risk of serious data breaches stems from the default ability of AI models to record and archive chat history, which is used to help train the AI to better respond to questions in the future. As these conversations become part of the AI's knowledge base, retrieval or deletion of data becomes almost impossible. 'It's like putting flour into bread,' said Ronan Murphy, a tech entrepreneur and AI adviser to the Irish government. 'Once you've done it, it's very hard to take it out.' This 'machine learning' means that highly sensitive information absorbed by AI could resurface later if prompted by someone with malicious intent. Experts warn that this silent and emerging threat from so-called 'shadow AI' is as dangerous as the one already posed by scammers like those who recently targeted Marks & Spencer, costing the retailer £300 million. M&S fell victim to a 'ransomware' attack, where hackers tricked company insiders into giving away computer passwords and other codes. Its chairman, Archie Norman, told MPs last week that the hack was caused by 'sophisticated impersonation' of one of its third-party users. Four people have been arrested by police investigating the cyber attacks on M&S and fellow retailers Co-op and Harrods. But cyber criminals are also using confidential data voraciously devoured by chatbots like ChatGPT to hack into vulnerable IT systems. 'If you know how to prompt it, the AI will spill the beans,' Murphy said. The scale of the problem is alarming. A recent survey found that nearly one in seven of all data security incidents is linked to generative AI. Another found that almost a quarter of 8,000 firms surveyed worldwide gave their staff unrestricted access to publicly available AI tools. That puts confidential data such as meeting notes, disciplinary reports or financial records 'at serious risk' that 'could lead employees to inadvertently propagate threats', a report from technology giant Cisco said. 'It's like the invention of the internet – it's just arrived and it's the future – but we don't understand what we are giving to these systems and what's happening behind the scenes at the back end,' said Cisco cyber threat expert Martin Lee. One of the most high-profile cybersecurity 'own-goals' in recent years was scored by South Korean group Samsung. The consumer electronics giant banned employees from using popular chatbots like ChatGPT after discovering in 2023 that one of its engineers had accidentally pasted secret code and meeting notes onto an AI platform. Banks have also cracked down on the use of ChatGPT by staff amid concerns about the regulatory risks they face from sharing sensitive financial information. But as organisations put guardrails in place to keep their data secure, they also don't want to miss out on what may be a once-in-a-generation chance to steal a march on their rivals. 'We're seeing companies race ahead with AI implementation as a means of improving productivity and staying one step ahead of competitors,' said Ruben Miessen, co-founder of compliance software group Legalfly, whose clients include banks, insurers and asset managers. 'However, a real risk is that the lack of oversight and any internal framework is leaving client data and sensitive personal information potentially exposed,' he added. The answer though, isn't to limit AI usage. 'It's about enabling it responsibly,' Miessen said. Murphy added: 'You either say no to everything or figure out a plan to do it safely. 'Protecting sensitive data is not sexy, it's boring and time-consuming.' But unless adequate controls are put in place, 'you make a hacker's job extremely easy'.

Among the displays was a humanoid robot, with moving, re-active facial features powered by ChatGPT responses, creators call it Ameca. Major Peake, the first British man to visit the International Space Station, has worked with Future Lab since its first iteration in 2017. Despite his excitement about the new technologies and possible uses of artificial intelligence (AI), he acknowledged the environmental impact of data centres used to run them. He told the PA news agency: 'There is no limit to how much they can use ChatGPT, they can be streaming cat videos and making avatars and doing what they want with no – no concern of how much energy that is using and how much water is using to cool. 'It's limitless, and it shouldn't be. Every single google search is having an impact, and an AI google search is a 30% increase in energy to function than a standard Google search and you don't even get the choice now.' Tech companies have hugely increased their water consumption needs for cooling data centres in recent years, according to The Times, writing one 100 word email using the (GP-4) version of the chatbot is equivalent to a 500ml water bottle. 'Maybe that's what we need next to the google search box – 'please search responsibly',' the former astronaut added. Business Energy UK has estimated that ChatGPT may presently use around 39.98 Million kWh per day — enough to charge eight million phones. Major Peake was quick to argue that the answers lie in space, using 'orbital data centres', he added that he was working with a company, Axium Space, who were set to launch two nodes later this year. He explained: 'The idea being that by the mid-2030s you have cost-parity between choosing an Orbital data centre vs a cloud server – you know, a database that would be here on earth. 'Because in space you've got clean, free limitless energy and you've got limitless ability to have thermal rejection into the vacuum of space with no impact on the environment.' Critics of this approach, such as Dr Domenico Vicinanza – associate professor of intelligent systems and data science at Anglia Ruskin University in the UK, say it may not be that simple. 'Space-based data centres would require not only the data equipment but also the infrastructure to protect, power, and cool them. All of which add up in weight and complexity,' Dr Vicinanza told the BBC. Asked about space and the environment, Major Peake said: 'It might not hold all the answers but it holds many answers and it forms a large percentage of the solution I think. 'In terms of right now, more than 50% of our climate data is coming from space so it's the finger on the pulse of the planet.' The displays at Future Lab presented a window into the cutting edge of science, mapping deep space, exploring the depths of the ocean, and the latest AI and robotics. The CEO of the National Robotarium, Stuart Miller, said the event 'helped people understand what's coming' and added that they wanted to ask how robots and humans can 'live in harmony together'. Ameca, the humanoid robot created by Cornwall-based company Engineered Arts, was the star attraction for many – able to hold and double back to parts of a conversation and answer questions quickly. Major Peake said: 'Her non-verbal responses really surprised me, and then you realise that's AI's interpretation of human interaction as well so it's not just the verbal responses you're getting, you're getting the AI response in terms of non-verbal skills.' Surrounded by cars, in a corner of a field in Chichester, some of the UK's newest scientific innovations piqued the interest of the crowds, but Major Peake acknowledged there has to be 'a balance' in how much AI should do, and considered whether it erodes human curiosity. 'There is absolutely a balance and that's why it's important to educate people that AI's just a tool – a tool for humans to use.' he said. Later asking: 'Does ChatGPT, does AI just make it too easy for us? Does it just give it to us rather than making us work for it? And how much pleasure is there in actually finding something out rather than just reading and learning something?'
