Chennai: NHAI Clears Six-Lane Flyover From Poonamallee To Maduravoyal, Full Details Inside

One lane will be used for piling and pier works, while 10 lanes, including service lanes, will remain open.
Vehicles entering Chennai from Bengaluru, Krishnagiri, and Vellore will soon get much-needed relief.
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has cleared the construction of a six-lane elevated corridor from Poonamallee to Maduravoyal, stretching 8.1km at a cost of Rs 1,250 crore.
As per TOI, the project, tendered earlier this week, will feature entry and exit points only at its ends and will be toll-charged. According to NHAI officials, work is expected to begin within three months, with a completion timeline of two-and-a-half years.
How Will It Change Travel?
Currently, the Poonamallee–Maduravoyal stretch sees around 90,000 vehicles every day, causing long delays at busy junctions. Once complete, the new flyover is expected to transform travel time into the city.
In the future, this corridor will connect with another planned 13km stretch from Outer Ring Road (ORR) to Sriperumbudur. Together, the two routes will enable commuters to cover 22km in less than 20 minutes, compared to the current one-hour slog.
Project director I S Janakumaran assured that traffic movement will not be heavily affected. Construction will take place by closing one lane at a time, while leaving 10 lanes, including service lanes, open for vehicles.
The Chennai Port is also expected to benefit, as the corridor will support faster cargo movement, making full use of its 135 MTPA handling capacity.
Local residents have welcomed the project but voiced concerns about delays and service lanes. Many feel that the three-year construction timeline is too long and want NHAI to speed up the work while also improving service roads.
Some also demanded early connectivity with the 262km Chennai–Bengaluru Expressway, so that commuters benefit immediately once the larger highway opens.
This is not an isolated project. NHAI has already completed an 84km stretch of National Expressway-7 in Bengaluru, with further works underway in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. The ambitious upgrades are expected to finish by 2026.

Hurricane Erin: NJ Announces State Of Emergency, Outer Banks Face Coastal Flooding

Last Updated: As of Thursday morning, the hurricane was located approximately 285 miles east of Cape Hatteras, according to the NHC. Hurricane Erin continues to pose a serious threat along parts of the US East Coast as it tracks northeastward, prompting emergency measures in multiple states. On Thursday, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy declared a state of emergency due to the risk of flash flooding, high surf, and dangerous rip currents. Although the hurricane has moved away from the coast of North Carolina, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) said in an 8 am ET advisory that Category 2 storm conditions still persist along the North Carolina and mid-Atlantic coastline. Erin's sustained winds have reached nearly 100 miles per hour, with even stronger gusts expected. A storm warning has been issued from Beaufort Inlet, North Carolina, to Chincoteague, Virginia. As of Thursday morning, the hurricane was located approximately 285 miles east of Cape Hatteras, according to the NHC. In his official statement, Governor Murphy warned of continued risks in the Garden State. 'As the storm moves past New Jersey over the next 24 hours, we are expecting high surf and rip currents, coastal and flash flooding, and a high erosion risk in parts of the state," he said. Along the Outer Banks of North Carolina, the most severe high tide is expected Thursday evening. The storm surge is forecast to bring inundation levels between 2 and 4 feet, particularly during the high tide cycle. The hurricane is projected to gain speed as it moves further out to sea on Thursday and Friday. It is expected to pass south of Atlantic Canada over the weekend. Local outlet The Island Free Press, which covers the Outer Banks region, reported 'extreme ocean overwash" during Thursday morning's high tide in northern Buxton, north of Hatteras Village, and northern Ocracoke Island. Floodwaters also inundated parts of Hatteras Village. More than 2,000 residents and tourists have evacuated from Ocracoke and Hatteras islands, following official orders. The storm surge has caused significant damage, breaching protective sand dunes and rendering Highway 12, the region's only main access road, impassable. Hurricane Erin originated on August 11 from a tropical wave off the Cape Verde Islands, intensifying rapidly and being officially upgraded to hurricane status on August 15. It has since become one of the fastest-intensifying storms of the Atlantic hurricane season. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Chandigarh roads crumble amid fund crunch

1 2 3 4 Chandigarh: If you've been wondering whether Chandigarh's roads are auditioning for a pothole documentary, you're not alone. With no resurfacing done for three straight years — thanks to a cash-strapped Chandigarh municipal corporation — the city's streets have gone from smooth to disastrous. Forget the cozy inner lanes; even the main sector-dividing roads, market stretches, and routes to Mohali and Panchkula are now riddled with craters. Paid parking lots? Also in ruins. It's not just a bumpy ride, it's a full-blown obstacle course. The monsoon has added drama to the mess. Rainwater fills the potholes, turning them into invisible traps. "To save their vehicles, people swerve into opposite lanes. It's like playing chicken with traffic," said Ashok Kumar of Sector 44, who's clearly had enough of the daily dodge-and-drive routine. Southern sectors like 44/45, 32/33, and 40/41 are leading the race to rock-bottom. Villages like Kaimbwala, Palsora, and Khuda Lahora aren't far behind, with stagnant water and crater-sized potholes parked right outside homes. And here's the kicker: the municipal corporation did prepare a Rs 50 crore road resurfacing estimate in 2023–24. But it never came out of paper. In 2024-25, they didn't even bother preparing one. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Use an AI Writing Tool That Actually Understands Your Voice Grammarly Install Now Undo The 2022–23 plan also fizzled out. It's been three years of budget blues and zero blacktop. City's road network Total road length: Chandigarh has approx 2,600 km of road networ MC's share: Around 1,860 km of roads fall under the Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh Administration's share: The remaining 760 km are maintained by the Chandigarh administration Annual resurfacing norm: MC is expected to resurface one-fifth of its road length every year, but that's mostly on paper Road design philosophy: The city follows the "7Vs" concept, categorizing roads by their function and traffic role. V-3 road transfer row Raising serious questions over the decision of the MC general house to transfer V-3 roads (sector dividing stretches) from the MC's engineering dept to UT counterpart, the Chandigarh administration asked the civic body to explain the relevant provision of the municipal act and rules through which the transfer of V-3 roads should be done. The move came following the legal assessment of the law department of the Chandigarh administration on this subject, which forced the local bodies department to give a written reply based on the relevant provisions. Significantly, despite the huge opposition from both opposition parties, Congress and AAP, the BJP-led MC approved the agenda in March's general house to transfer the V-3 roads to the Chandigarh administration. Residents Voice Frustration "The condition of roads in Chandigarh is extremely poor. It reflects a serious lapse on the part of the authorities responsible for maintenance and resurfacing. Chandigarh, once known for its financial surplus, now appears to be struggling. Potholes are widespread, and the lack of timely repairs is unacceptable. Residents pay among the highest taxes in the country and deserve better infrastructure. There is growing public concern over the use of funds and the functioning of the Municipal Corporation. " Baljinder Singh Bittu, chairman of the Federation of Sectors Welfare Association of Chandigarh (FOSWAC) "Chandigarh's roads, once a source of pride, are now a cause for concern. In southern sectors, the road conditions are so poor that vehicle breakdowns and accidents have become common. At night, the risk increases due to poor visibility of potholes. Even parking lots are in disrepair. There is a perception that both the Municipal Corporation and the Chandigarh Administration are failing to manage the city effectively. " Pardeep Chopra | secretary, Citizens' Association, Sector 21 "It is disappointing to see the decline in road infrastructure. Chandigarh's roads are now in worse condition than those in neighbouring cities like Panchkula and Mohali. Immediate resurfacing is needed across the city. The absence of even basic patchwork reflects serious financial and administrative shortcomings. Many residents believe that corruption within the municipal corporation is contributing to the problem.
