Rugby-'Big boys' Barrett, McKenzie can handle Mo'unga return, says NZ coach Robertson
(Reuters) -New Zealand coach Scott Robertson has welcomed the internal competition Richie Mo'unga's return will bring while offering cold comfort to the players who may lose the race for the All Blacks' coveted number 10 jersey.
After a trophy-laden stint in Japan, Mo'unga will come home to New Zealand next season and bid to recover the starting flyhalf position in the leadup to the 2027 World Cup in Australia.
That could see Beauden Barrett and Damian McKenzie make way for a player who won seven championship trophies under Robertson at the Canterbury Crusaders.
Robertson said everyone was just "really, really pleased" with the return of Mo'unga.
"New Zealand rugby is pleased in general that he's coming back into our game," he told reporters on Tuesday.
"He's going to be around for a Rugby World Cup. He's served our country for a long time and he's going to come back and do it again."
Mo'unga left New Zealand for Japan on a lucrative, three-year deal with Brave Lupus Tokyo after helping the All Blacks reach the 2023 World Cup final in France under former coach Ian Foster.
Robertson used McKenzie initially as starting flyhalf in his first season last year but twice World Rugby Player of the Year Barrett has since supplanted the Waikato Chiefs playmaker.
Asked about how Barrett and McKenzie might be affected by Mo'unga's return, Robertson said the team came first.
"They're big boys," added Robertson.
"That's professionalism, we're here to compete. The jersey is bigger than everyone.
"Everyone knows it's always earned."

Pogba watches as Monaco start Ligue 1 season with a win
PARIS: Paul Pogba watched as Monaco easily beat Le Havre 3-1 in their Ligue 1 opener on Saturday as Lyon won away at Lens. On Friday French giants Marseille suffered a first-day upset 1-0 at 10-man Rennes. In Saturday's late game last season's fourth-placed team Nice fell 1-0 at home to Toulouse, but Monaco and Lyon avoided upsets. Georges Mikautadze scored the only goal as Lyon won 1-0 in northern France while 2018 World Cup winner Pogba's appearance in the locker room at the Louis II Stadium was one of the highlights of the first half of Monaco's game. Dressed in a vintage Monaco jersey, a cap on his head, and a big smile on his face, Pogba saw his team quickly take the measure of an outclassed Le Havre. Midfielder Pogba signed a two-year contract with Monaco from Juventus this summer in a bid to relaunch his career back home in France. The former Manchester United player had made only 12 appearances across the last three seasons due to injuries, suspension and an extortion case in which he was the victim. However, to see Pogba in a Monaco jersey, fans will have to wait a little longer, along with Guinea-Bissau forward Ansu Fati, the club's other big summer signing. Adi Hutter's hosts proved dominant, particularly in midfield opening after 32 minutes after Gautier Lloris bundled Aleksandr Golovin's powerful cross into his own net.
