BBB warns consumers of possible REAL ID scams

Yahoo04-05-2025

JOPLIN, Mo. — The deadline to get your REAL ID is almost here, and the Better Business Bureau is warning consumers to watch out for ID scams.
Starting Wednesday, May 7, you'll need a REAL ID to fly domestically and to enter federal facilities.
A REAL ID can only be obtained in person at your local DMV or license office.
Any website claiming you can get one online is most likely fake.
The BBB hasn't gotten any reports of REAL ID scams yet, but that doesn't necessarily mean they're not out there.
'Something that we do see that's similar are passports and passport renewals. People get in a hurry because they've got a trip coming up, and they start looking online on how to expedite that, and scammers create websites to take advantage of that and confused consumers. So while we haven't seen anything with READ ID yet, it is a possibility because of all the conversation and confusion,' said Pamela Hernandez, BBB Springfield Regional Director.
A REAL ID will have a gold star in the corner, and requires more documentation to get than other kinds of ID.
You can learn more about the requirements from your state's Department of Revenue website.

BBB: thousands of dollars lost due to scams targeting vacationers

HONOLULU (KHON2) – A warning to travelers — as summer adventures heat up, so do scams targeting vacationers. The Better Business Bureau is warning travelers about a fake website and call center posing as Expedia that has already cost consumers thousands of dollars. Tips for families traveling with loved one with Alzheimer's According to BBB's Cameron Nakashima, the BBB has received reports of travelers mistakenly modifying existing Expedia bookings through a lookalike site that closely resembles Expedia. The site — often found through online search ads — claims to offer flight and hotel reservations. Several travelers reported booking flights or calling to modify tickets they thought were purchased through Expedia. But after payment, victims are left with fake confirmation numbers, no real bookings and no way to recover their money. Reported losses range from $1,500 to $4,000. So here are Nakashima's tips to avoid these types of travel scams: When you need to make a reservation or edit a booking, start by going directly to official websites, not through search ads. Type the web address manually whenever possible. Or use the company's official app. Or if you're not sure, you can go to the company's listing on to find their official contact information. Keep your money safe. Whenever possible, make an online payment with a credit card so that it is easier to dispute charges if fraud occurs. If ordering tickets through a third-party booking service or an airline you are not familiar with, always research the company at to see ratings and complaints before making a purchase. California DMV warns of new vehicle registration support scam

Above: FOX 5 report on how to get a REAL ID in California. SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — The California Department of Motor Vehicles is urging drivers to be wary of a new online scam offering assistance to renew vehicle registration at a discounted rate. DMV officials say the latest scam uses social media posts to advertise help that could save people up to 50% on vehicle registration renewal fees. Those who respond are asked to give their license plate, Vehicle Identification Number and the customer's full name, as well as to make a payment through an online platform like CashApp. System error may have affected traffic court notices in California. Are you impacted? According to the department, requests for these details or payments will never be made through unofficial channels. They further encourage drivers to only conduct business with the DMV or with an authorized business through the Business Partner Automation Program. A list of businesses that participate in this program can be found on the DMV's website. An example of what the advertisement looks like can be found below. 'The safest way to renew your vehicle registration is directly through the official DMV website,' DMV Director Steve Gordon said in a release earlier this month. 'We do not offer discounts, and we never conduct official business through social media or other unofficial channels.' To avoid falling victim to this scam and others that have been circulating in recent months, the DMV encourages Californians to take these precautions: Steer clear of offers offering discounted DMV services — the department does not offer special deals through unauthorized third-parties or on social media. Do not respond to unsolicited or suspicious texts. Verify the source if you are unsure whether something you come across is official or if you have concerns. Officials encourage Californians do this by contacting the department's customer service team at 800-777-0133. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
