Atletico beaten by Espanyol in La Liga opener

MADRID: Espanyol staged a late comeback to grab a shock 2-1 win over Atletico Madrid on Sunday as Diego Simeone's men made a disappointing start to their La Liga campaign. Pere Milla scored a late winner as Atletico stumbled to defeat in Barcelona despite leading through Julian Alvarez's brilliant goal. Atletico have been busy in the transfer market, with notable arrivals including Alex Baena, David Hancko, Johnny Cardoso and Giacomo Raspadori, in a bid to challenge Barcelona and Real Madrid for the title. Angel Correa, Rodrigo De Paul and Cesar Azpilicueta have all departed as part of the rebuild after Simeone's team finished third, 12 points behind champions Barca last term. Barcelona kicked off their title defence with a 3-0 win at Mallorca on Saturday, while Real Madrid host Osasuna on Tuesday. Slovakia centre-back Hancko had the best chance of a cagey opening half-hour for Atletico but could only head straight at Espanyol goalkeeper Marko Dmitrovic. The visitors forged ahead in spectacular fashion in the 37th minute, though, as Alvarez curled a free-kick into the top corner, well beyond the dive of Dmitrovic. Alvarez went close to doubling Atletico's lead just before the hour mark when he crashed a shot against the post. Espanyol hit back 17 minutes from time as Miguel Rubio netted after a set-piece. Substitute Milla completed the turnaround, heading in Omar El Hilali's cross to snatch all three points for the home side in the 84th minute. Athletic Bilbao got off to a winning start as substitute Robert Navarro's late goal sealed a dramatic 3-2 victory over Sevilla. Nico Williams' penalty and Maroan Sannadi's strike put the Basque club two goals up at half-time at the San Mames. But Dodi Lukebakio fired in off the post on the hour to cut the deficit before Lucien Agoume drew Sevilla level with 18 minutes to play. Navarro had the final say in the 81st minute, though, giving Bilbao an opening win as they look to back up a fine campaign last term when they finished fourth to qualify for the Champions League. — AFP

Atletico Madrid stunned by Espanyol in La Liga opener

ESPANYOL pulled off a dramatic 2-1 comeback win over Atletico Madrid in their La Liga season opener. Atletico took the lead through a spectacular free-kick by Julian Alvarez in the 37th minute. Alvarez nearly doubled the advantage before the hour mark but struck the post instead. Espanyol equalised late through Miguel Rubio after a set-piece in the 73rd minute. Substitute Pere Milla sealed the victory with an 84th-minute header from Omar El Hilali's cross. Diego Simeone's side, which finished third last season, had several new signings in action, including Alex Baena and David Hancko. Atletico's defensive reshuffle saw Angel Correa, Rodrigo De Paul, and Cesar Azpilicueta depart in the summer. Barcelona began their title defence with a 3-0 win over Mallorca, while Real Madrid face Osasuna on Tuesday. Elsewhere, Athletic Bilbao secured a thrilling 3-2 victory over Sevilla with Robert Navarro scoring the late winner. Nico Williams and Maroan Sannadi had put Bilbao two goals ahead before Sevilla fought back through Dodi Lukebakio and Lucien Agoume. Navarro's 81st-minute strike ensured Bilbao started their campaign with a win as they aim to build on last season's Champions League qualification. - AFP

JDT's new faces make instant impact

Fierce battle: JDT's Teto Martin (front) vying for the ball with UM-Damansara's Saiful Iskandar Adha Saiful Azlan. — Bernama PETALING JAYA: Johor Darul Ta'zim coach Xisco Munoz says his side are only just finding their rhythm despite a commanding 5-0 win over UM-Damansara in the FA Cup round of 16 first-leg tie, a result that highlighted the champions' depth. 'It's very important because some players never played together before, and they had a good connection tonight,' said the Spaniard after the match. 'I'm happy with the players who debuted – they understood our style, they gave intensity, and most importantly, they showed ambition.' At the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium in Iskandar Puteri on Saturday, Argentine wingback Jonathan Silva proved the catalyst, breaking the deadlock with a sharp finish in the 44th minute before doubling the lead 10 minutes into the second half. From there, JDT's new faces stepped into the spotlight. Spanish forward Teto Martin marked his debut with a goal in the 78th minute, while national striker Joao Figueiredo (90th) and young winger Celso Bermejo (91st) capped the rout. For Munoz, the result was less about the scoreline and more about the progress of his reshaped squad. Several players were handed their first starts, and the coach was eager to emphasise that the performance showed signs of chemistry developing. 'Once we scored the first goal, the game became more open. After that, we had more chances, more intensity in the wide areas, and the team played with better rhythm.' The coach also singled out Bermejo, the 20-year-old debutant who scored within minutes of coming on. 'He came in with ambition, and for a striker, the most important thing is to score. It gives confidence, and for us, it shows we have players pushing every single day to give their maximum.' Still, Munoz stressed that August was far too early to talk about peak form. With multiple competitions ahead – including the AFC Champions League where JDT face three Japanese clubs – the Spaniard underlined the need for patience. 'In my life, when I learn something, it's because I make a mistake first. So we will make mistakes, but we will improve,' he said. 'Every day, we try to build better connections, better solutions, and the most important thing is that when you are in JDT, you must always give your maximum.'
