Govt taking steps to curb cyber crimes: Scindia

New Delhi, Jul 30 (PTI) The government is taking various measures, including setting up Digital Intelligence Platform, to curb cyber crimes and international spoof calls have also come down, Union Communication Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said on Wednesday.
He told the Lok Sabha that the communications and home ministries have taken four to five major measures to deal with cyber crimes.
The Digital Intelligence Platform (DIP) brings various stakeholders together.
It has coopted 620 institutions, including 570 banks, police institutions of 36 states and investigating agencies, Scindia said during the Question Hour.
Elaborating on the measures taken, the minister also said that international spoofed calls have come down by 97 per cent.
A Fraud Risk Indicator (FRI) software is being used wherein the data about individuals doing fraud with banks are categorised into various categories. The details are provided to all the banks and the transaction of such individuals are blocked, he said.
Responding to a supplementary question, Scindia said state-owned BSNL and MTNL are back on the road to recovery.
The minister mentioned about the review meeting of BSNL this week and said a business plan will be prepared, especially for each business circle. PTI RAM DV DV

PTI Congress MP Shashi Tharoor New Delhi: Senior Congress parliamentarian Shashi Tharoor on Thursday said President Trump's 25% tariff on India may be a "bargaining tactic" and India has every right to resist unrealistic demands and wished the Indian negotiators luck and courage. He felt that if America is completely unreasonable with its demands, India has the strength to diversify its markets elsewhere. "If a good deal is not possible, we may have to walk away," he felt. Talking to journalists about the Trump tariff and about the India-US trade negotiations, Tharoor said: "It is a challenging negotiation. We are negotiating with many countries. The US is not the only country we are negotiating with. We have ongoing negotiations with the EU, we already concluded a deal with the UK, and we are talking with other countries also. If we can't compete in America, we may have to diversify our markets outside of America. We are not out of options. If America is completely unreasonable with its demands, we have to move elsewhere. That is the strength of India. We are not a totally export-dependent economy like China. We have a good and strong domestic market. We must give strong support to our negotiators to find the best deal possible. If a good deal is not possible, we may have to walk away..." Tharoor, a former union minister, said while the 25% US tariff may be a bargaining tactic, there is a possibility that during negotiation it may come down. If it doesn't, Tharoor added, then it will "certainly damage our exports because America is a very big market" with the Indian exports accounting for about 87 to 90 billion dollars. However, he added, India can't allow the US tariff to hit the interests of key Indian sectors, including agriculture and farmers. "For example, we can't risk farmers' lives to make America happy. America should understand our needs also".

Croatia holds military parade as it marks 30 years since key war victory
Zagreb, Jul 31 (AP) Thousands watched a military parade in Croatia's capital on Thursday marking 30 years since a key war victory as the country looks to further boost its forces with a possible loan from a new European Union defence fund. A flyover in Zagreb by French-made Rafale jets was a highlight of the show that included 3,400 army personnel along with police units, emergency service teams and war veterans. Navy battle ships sailed simultaneously by the Adriatic Sea port of Split. Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic said that 'we have passed a big process of transition from eastern to western technology in order to be compatible with the capabilities of those armies who are our partners and allies." Croatia joined the EU in 2013, four years after becoming a member of NATO. Back in August 1995, Croatia recaptured lands that had been held by minority Serbs since their rebellion in 1991 against the country's independence from the former Communist-run Yugoslavia. The Operation Storm offensive presented a turning point in the war and also triggered a mass exodus of ethnic Serbs from Croatia. Tensions persist in relations with Balkan rival Serbia, which backed the ethnic Serb rebellion in the 1990s'. Serbia plans to hold a commemoration ceremony for the Serb victims of the offensive, and Belgrade has cautioned Serbian citizens against traveling to Croatia in early August. A military parade in Belgrade is planned for September. Political analyst Zarko Puhovski said he believed the military parade was designed both to garner popular support for further defense spending amid security concerns in Europe fueled by Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, and as a message of strength in the region. 'It's just putting on a show, to put military equipment on display," Puhovski told The Associated Press. 'This will be presented as Croatia's effort to join the overall trend of increased militarization in Europe." Croatia is among eighteen EU countries that have applied for billions of euros from the bloc's program of cheap loans aimed at helping Europe provide for its own security. Plenkovic has said that Croatia could seek 1.8 billion euros (USD 2 billion) from the fund. Mega drug haul probe now adds up to 435cr
Mumbai: The probe into the mega Rs 390 crore mephedrone haul by Mumbai police led to seizure of another consignment of the contraband worth Rs 44 crore from Powai on Thursday, an official said. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Police had seized more than 187 kg mephedrone worth Rs 382 crore following a raid in Mysuru in neighbouring Karnataka last week. The probe into the case began in April this year after a man was held with 52 gm of mephedrone in Sakinaka in western Mumbai, and his interrogation led police to three more persons, from whom 4.5 kg mephedrone worth Rs 8 crore was recovered. Eight persons have been arrested in the case so far. "Based on the interrogation of the arrested accused, a further consignment of 22 kilograms of mephedrone worth Rs 44 crore was seized from Powai along with chemicals worth Rs 16 lakh used in manufacturing the contraband," official said. The total haul in the case now stands at more than 210 kg of mephedrone worth almost Rs 435 crore, the official informed. Further probe into the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act case is underway to unravel the peddling network as well as the supply chain of items used to manufacture mephedrone. PTI
