BNP Paribas Falls Further Behind on Valuation as BBVA Tops It

Mint2 days ago
(Bloomberg) -- BNP Paribas SA, long the European Union's most valuable bank, has dropped to fifth place, highlighting how its stock is trailing peers.
The market value of Spanish rival BBVA SA rose to €91.8 billion ($107 billion) at 11:26 a.m. in Madrid on Friday, above the €90.4 billion for BNP Paribas. Banco Santander SA has the highest valuation among EU lenders, followed by UniCredit SpA and Intesa Sanpaolo SpA.
BNP Paribas has benefited less than many competitors from the end of negative interest rates in Europe a few years ago, partly because of a higher share of fixed-rate loans in France compared to Spain and Italy. Long-time Chief Executive Officer Jean-Laurent Bonnafe is now focusing on boosting profitability at the lender's large domestic retail business.
European bank stocks have been on a tear since the beginning of the year, with many hitting the highest level in more than a decade. Lenders have been boosted by higher interest rates and, more recently, prospects of a public sector investment spree across the region.
But while BNP Paribas similarly hit a multi-year high earlier this year, its overall increase has been less strong than for many of its peers, especially in Spain and Italy. The bank is now one of just a few major ones in the EU whose price-to-book ratio, which is a common valuation indicator, has remained below 1.
The price-to-book ratios for France's other big listed banks, Societe Generale SA and Credit Agricole SA, are below 1 as well.
BNP Paribas' stock has risen about 35% this year to date, compared with roughly 55% for the industry. BBVA is up about 68%.
The Spanish bank's shares have rallied around 17% since the end of July alone after it unveiled higher payout targets. BBVA, whose formal name is Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria SA, is also seeking to buy the smaller domestic rival, Banco Sabadell SA.

Donald Trump wants more big fat pickup trucks on streets of Europe and Japan

One of the key differences in car buyers' preferences in the US and Europe is the size of the vehicles. While the consumers in the US, Australia prefer mammoth-sized SUVs and pickup trucks, car buyers in Europe, Japan prefer smaller, fuel-efficient cars. This is pickup trucks don't find much traction in the European market. Now, US President Donald Trump wants to change that picture. He wants to put the large pickup trucks to dominate the skinniest streets of Europe. In an interaction with CNBC, Trump has said that if there were no trade barriers in place, pickup trucks would have found a strong place in markets like Japan and Europe. However, in reality, the problem is not with tariffs but with the taste of the consumers, the size and the practicality of those vehicles. In a nutshell, cultural preferences and infrastructure, not trade barriers, are the main hurdles for the sales growth of pickup trucks in Europe and Japan. Be it Japan or Europe, consumers overwhelmingly prefer smaller and more fuel-efficient cars like the Toyota Corolla, Volkswagen Golf, and Renault Clio. On the other hand, despite enjoying lower tariffs, carmakers like Ford, General Motors and Stellantis see their market share abroad remains tiny. Speaking about this, Trump reportedly told CNBC, 'They're taking our cars. They're taking the very beautiful Ford F-150, which does very well. And I'm sure we'll do very well there, and other things that do very well here will also do well there." Trump's comments come after he promised, but is yet to impose a tariff cut on Japan from the current 27.5 per cent to 15 per cent. However, even if that goes down, it doesn't mean other challenges will be over since roads are narrow, the parking lots are tight, and the fuel is prohibitively expensive. Japan recorded 3.7 million car sales in 2024. Just 570 of them were Chevrolet, 420 were Cadillac, and 120 were Dodge. Ford hasn't sold a car there in almost a decade. On the other hand, Jeep is the most popular U.S. brand in Japan and has been for over a decade. Check out Upcoming Cars in India 2025, Best SUVs in India. First Published Date:

Volkswagen to pull the plug on ID.5 EV, blame it on sluggish sales

Volkswagen is planning to shelve its ID.5 electric car from the OEM's EV lineup as early as 2027. Introduced in 2021, the swoopy electric SUV seems to end its run with a seven-year life cycle, as the automaker has no plan to bring a second-generation iteration of the model. The reason behind the decision to drop the model from the product lineup is possibly sluggish sales, as the ID.5 failed to gain traction in European markets. British automotive publication Autocar UK has reported that Volkswagen will drop the ID.5 from its product portfolio in 2027. The report claimed that consumers in the European markets prefer more spacious and conventionally styled ID.4 over the ID.5, which is a reason why the brand never tasted upbeat sales for the latter model. Also, not launching the ID.5 in the United States further limited its potential. In the first half of 2025, Volkswagen Group's global EV sales rose 47 per cent to about 465,000 units, giving the company an 11 per cent share of the global market. What's more interesting is that the ID.5 actually tops the Volkswagen Group's EV sales charts for the first half of the year, but only because its numbers are combined with those of the ID.4. Also, discontinuation of the ID.5 raises questions about the fate of the Ford Capri. Ford revived the iconic nameplate on its own coupe-styled electric crossover in 2024, but production was soon reduced in response to rapidly deteriorating market conditions for electric vehicles. Now it is to be seen how Ford reacts to the discontinuation of the ID.5. The discontinuation of Volkswagen ID.5 seems to be part of the brand's broader effort to cull underperforming models. Volkswagen has already shelved the Passat sedan, recently ended Arteon production, and is rumoured to drop the Touareg in 2026. The T-Roc Cabriolet, too, will bow out in 2027. The plans for a smaller minivan to replace the ageing Touran has also been scrapped. Check out Upcoming EV Cars in India. First Published Date:
