Why This 70-Year-Old Maserati Is Stealing the Show at the 2025 Mille Miglia
This isn't just any classic Maserati. This specific car, chassis no. 2043 is a proper legend. Think of it as the Tom Brady of the Mille Miglia. It has more appearances in the original, terrifyingly fast speed race (five consecutive times from 1953 to 1957) than any other Maserati in history. And it wasn't just showing up for a nice drive, being piloted by champions like the world-famous Luigi Musso.
Its return to the famous "Freccia Rossa" route, 70 years later, is a truly special moment for racing fans. To make it all official, the car is currently undergoing its Certificate of Authenticity process with Maserati Classiche, the brand's program for verifying its iconic models.
The A6 GCS/53 offered up clever engineering packed under that gorgeous bodywork. The short-stroke, twin-ignition "Superquadro" engine was the double espresso shot of 1950s engines. Small, potent, light, and built to rev to the moon. With twin overhead camshafts and a geartrain, this was Formula 1-level technology for a road-racing sports car producing around 170 horsepower at 7,300 rpm.
Its whole purpose in life was to take over the super-competitive 2.0-liter sports car category. While it never won the Mille Miglia outright, it was the scrappy underdog that consistently punched way above its weight. In its first major outing at the Mille Miglia, it snagged sixth place overall and first in its class. It was fast, it was beautiful, and it carved out a special place in the hearts of fans for being a tenacious competitor.

Of course, Maserati didn't just bring their grandfather to the party alone. Accompanying the historic A6GCS/53, Maserati has designated several vehicles from its current range to serve as official support cars for the 2025 Mille Miglia. This contemporary lineup includes the GranCabrio, the GranTurismo Trofeo, and the Grecale Trofeo. Each one is sporting a special livery to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Trident logo, making this a full-on family reunion.
The Maserati A6 GCS/53 is the star of this show because it possesses something that new cars, for all their power and technology, simply don't have yet: a story. It's a rolling, breathing piece of history, a physical link to a golden era of motorsport when drivers were heroes and the cars were breathtakingly dangerous.
The A6 GCS/53 represents the very soul of Maserati. It's for the true enthusiast, the person who understands that while horsepower figures are temporary, legacy is forever. The new models are fantastic, but the A6 GCS/53 is a visceral reminder that true greatness isn't just engineered, it's earned over decades.

Non-Existent Tesla Roadster Claimed To Be "Last Best Driver's Car":TDS
The latest car news, reviews, and features. Good morning and welcome to The Down Shift , or TDS for short. The Down Shift is a new weekday early morning quick rundown of the latest news that's bubbling. It's meant to be something that can be easily glanced at while drinking that first cup of coffee. Each day TDS will start with a quick paragraph, maybe an update on what I'm driving, and then about five headlines each summarized in a sentence with a link for those seeking to read more and go deeper into the stories. The formatting will absolutely evolve, and feedback in both the comments and via email are welcome at tips@ TDS is light, it's quick, and it's meant to pair with your coffee. I'm already one cup into the day. Lets get into it. 🚘 What I'm driving: I just spent a long weekend with the 2025 Lexus LC 500 Convertible and it makes the most lovely sounds. 🔋 Tesla's Vice President of Vehicle Engineering Lars Moravy claimed in front of a crowd at X Takeover 2025 that the upcoming Tesla Roadster, which debuted in 2017, will be the 'last best driver's car.' 💰 Audi had a 'challenging' first half of the year due to 'tariffs and expenses,' and the result will be a 'fundamental realignment of Audi,' according to the automaker. ⚙️ Santo Ficili, CEO of both Maserati and Alfa Romeo, said a 'few-off' set of cars could come from the Trident and the manual transmission might even be revived. 🌎 As the midwest gets pummeled with heat and storms the EPA reportedly drafted a plan to end the agency's ability to fight climate change and remove limits on tailpipe emissions. 🏎️ With the results of the F1 Belgian Grand Prix over the weekend it sounds like Max Verstappen won't be able to trigger his supposed exit clause with Red Bull for the 2026 season, if that was part of the champ's plans. Maserati Says People Have a 'Bad Feeling' About Electric Supercars
It's been a few months since Maserati canceled the fully electric MC20 after realizing customers 'are very keen on driving powerful ICE engines.' That's according to an official statement sent to Motor1 by a company spokesperson back in March. With that in mind, it's no surprise the Modena-based automaker is now channeling its efforts into gas-powered models. Davide Danesin, Head of Engineering, told Autocar that some people have a 'bad feeling' about supercars equipped with a battery. We'd add that the sentiment likely extends to most performance-oriented cars, from affordable hot hatches to seven-figure hypercars. He went on to admit that 'there are still customers looking for pure mechanical cars,' as evidencened by high-end buyers who had no interest in an EV version of the MC20. These concerns largely stem from the additional hardware EVs require, which increases complexity, adds weight, and introduces all the downsides that come with it. As a result, the plan is to give people what they want: a pure ICE experience via the company's Nettuno V-6. Beyond that, a manual gearbox could even make a surprising return. Maserati hasn't sold a three-pedal car since the mid-2000s. Yet, Danesin sees a stick shift as a real possibility for a limited-run model: 'By doing a purely mechanical car, it does make sense to have a mechanical gearbox with a shifter. It fulfils perfectly our approach and the mindset. So honestly, I think one day we'll do it.' Alfa Romeo and Maserati CEO Santo Ficili reiterates that the two Italian brands will collaborate more closely in the future, hinting at the prospect of a jointly developed gasoline supercar. The tie-up would follow the 33 Stradale, which partially borrowed the carbon tub and aluminum subframes at both ends from the MC20. Autocar speculates that a Maserati-branded supercar would likely be a Granturismo-based GT featuring an upgraded version of the twin-turbo 3.0-liter engine, delivering more than the 621 hp available in the MC20 and its MCPura successor. The added power would likely come without any electric assistance. An equivalent Alfa Romeo is reportedly also in the pipeline, helping to achieve economies of scale and make a solid business case. However, the brand's marketing boss, Cristiano Fiorio, recently said a follow-up to the 33 Stradale shouldn't be rushed, as volume-oriented models are the current priority . We shouldn't fault automakers for channeling resources into hybrids and EVs. Increasingly strict emissions regulations make it harder to justify investing in gas-powered sports cars, especially those with large-displacement engines. Another challenge facing car companies and their customers is the higher taxation on pure ICE vehicles in certain parts of the world, particularly in Europe. To give you a weird example: the BMW M3 is €17,350 ($20,000) more expensive than the M5 in Ireland, due to the latter's lower emissions (at least on paper) from its plug-in hybrid setup. British expat amazed by $2 Aussie roadside scene: 'Never seen anything like it'
A British expat who recently made a home for herself in Far North Queensland was stunned by a roadside feature that she now believes should be everywhere around the world. Anita, originally from London, said she was "genuinely impressed" after stumbling upon an unmanned bright yellow trailer on the side of the road filled to the brim with bananas selling for $2 per kilogram. "I've never seen anything like it," she told Yahoo News. Fruit and vegetable stalls on regional roadsides across the country are a common sight for Aussies, with similar set-ups selling avocados, mangoes, lychees and in other parts of the country strawberries and mandarins. The Cairns banana stall is one of 11 in the area operated by the Banana Brothers. Owner Tony Trafford told Yahoo News the produce comes directly from local farms, and customers regularly tell him they "taste better" than store-bought bananas. "You don't get $2 snacks anywhere now," he said. "The stand is completely unmanned and runs on honesty. You can weigh your bananas on a little scale or just grab one," Anita said. Young expat amazed by 'brilliant' roadside feature Anita, who recently moved to Cairns with her partner, said she was getting her bearings in her new home when she came across the stand, which "stood out" on the roadside. "The bananas are organic and straight from a local farm, which makes it feel like a healthier and more authentic way to get your fruit," she said. "It's also just a fun experience and way more memorable than picking something off a supermarket shelf." She'd love to see other countries adopt the idea. "I'd love to see these kinds of stands become a normal thing all around the world. It would be amazing to see something like this back home in England," she said. Tony explained that the unmanned trailers operate on an honour system. Those without cash can use a built-in EFTPOS machine to pay with their cards. He explained that thefts do happen, including one prolific Maserati driver allegedly caught red-handed stealing large amounts of bananas and fleeing the scene. "Most people do the right thing, which we rely on," he explained, adding cameras do operate at all his sites across Cairns to deter opportunistic thieves. Queensland's $600m banana industry Far North Queensland makes up for 94 per cent of Australia's banana production, valued at around $600 million, according to the Queensland Government. Due to strict quarantine regulations, all of the bananas sold in Australia are locally grown. Earlier this year, Queensland's banana crops "copped a flogging" following unprecedented rain in the area. Luckily, only a small percentage of flooded farms' banana crops were destroyed following the deluge, but many faced four to five months of recovery after the trees' roots became waterlogged. But as locals waited for the water levels to subside, the town of Innisfail appeared to have nothing in its local Coles store except bananas. In one photo shared online, no other produce, except for the 18 boxes of the fruit, can be seen in a photo of the store's produce section. Anita moved to Australia with her partner two years ago, and after travelling around she believes Cairns is one of the best places she's ever lived. "The winter weather alone is a winner," she said of the tropical climate. "Being surrounded by the Great Barrier Reef, tropical islands, mountains, and the Daintree Rainforest honestly feels surreal. I still can't believe I get to call this place home," she said. Do you have a story tip? Email: newsroomau@ You can also follow us on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Twitter and YouTube.
