Dayton violence interruption program set to begin this summer
A violence prevention program held a meeting Thursday evening to discuss slowing down crime in younger populations.

Cure Violence Global, also known as CVG, is a program that says they have helped other cities reduce their gun violence from 60 percent to 30 percent.

'This is accomplished by hiring members of the community who have had similar life experiences to those at highest risk of committing acts of violence,' the CVG website says. 'Staff are trained as community health workers and receive extensive education and coaching in evidence-based methods of mediation, persuasion, behavior change, and norm change — all of which are essential for limiting the spread of outbreaks of violence.'

Dayton residents showed up to the event, and are eager to see change.
'I think it's well worth trying out,' Julian Pruitt from Dayton said.
Pruitt believes with the right mentors and guidance, the program will be impactful.
Mayor Jeff Mims said that having these community leaders be the example could show youth that things can be changed.
'Break up a fight, mediating the disagreement between even adults, for a young person to maybe see some adults change their attitude in the middle of a disturbance,' Mims said.
The program will focus on target neighborhood areas that are hit hardest by violent crime.
The implementation of the program is not free.
'We're probably $450,000 that we're looking at in terms of getting this situation kicked off,' Mims said.
Mims is hoping to have this program start by the beginning of the summer 2025.

14 people sentenced after GA dog fighting ring bust
A judge has sentenced 14 defendants in a large-scale federal dog fighting case in Southwest Georgia to a total of 343 months in prison. According to court records, defendants from three states all gathered on a property in Donalsonville, Georgia, on April 24, 2022, where they held a dog fighting event. Someone called 911, and police arrived and saved 27 dogs that night, including one found in the blood-soaked fighting pit with severe injuries, who died soon after it was found. Police also seized a distribution-sized amount of methamphetamine. Cell phones that were seized at the event contained evidence of some of the participants' participation in the dog fighting 'industry,' including large text message chains about dog fighting, fight reports, and dog fighting videos and photos, including one of a dog that had been hanged to death in a garage. Police seized and rescued 78 pit bull-type dogs during their investigation, including 51 recovered during search warrants executed with arrest warrants. Gainesville Fire Department to stage fake fire during training exercise on Monday
Gainesville residents may notice emergency vehicles and what appears to be smoke near the downtown area on Monday, but don't fret. It's just a training exercise. The Gainesville Fire Department will conduct field training on Monday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. They will simulate a commercial fire near downtown Gainesville. Man dies after tree falls on top of car in northeast GA
The Georgia State Patrol has identified a man who was killed in a car wreck over the weekend. [DOWNLOAD: Free WSB-TV News app for alerts as news breaks] On Saturday, around 6:48 p.m., GSP was called to the area of State Route 51 near Garrison Road in Banks County. When troopers arrived, they learned that Jason Keith Payne, 56, of Carnesville, was driving a 2000 Nissan Altima. Officials said that while Payne was traveling eastbound, a tree on the south side of State Route 51 fell across the road, hitting the top of the car. Payne was pronounced dead at the scene. According to GEMA, the 56-year-old is believed to have been killed when a line of storms moved through metro Atlanta on Saturday, bringing damaging winds and heavy rain. Gov. Brian Kemp shared his condolences in a post on X.
