The real locations behind West Virginia's appearance in ‘Captain America: Brave New World'
CLARKSBURG, W.Va. (WBOY) — Although reviews are mixed on the latest entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, West Virginians might have been surprised to see their home state make an appearance in 'Captain America: Brave New World.'
This article contains minor spoilers about the driving plot of 'Captain America: Brave New World,' but will not spoil any of the movie's big reveals.
'Captain America: Brave New World,' focuses on Sam Wilson, the newly-minted Captain America, and his friend Joaquin Torres, who recently stepped in to fill the now-vacant role of the Falcon. Following an assassination attempt on the newly-elected President Thaddeus Ross, Wilson and Torres begin searching for the person behind the plot to kill the president.
Eventually, their search leads them to a location known as 'Camp Echo One,' which Wilson points out is situated in a secluded location in West Virginia. As Captain America and the Falcon approach the facility, the camera pans to a sign on the side of the road that says the two are entering a radio quiet zone, exactly like West Virginia's real-life National Radio Quiet Zone (NRQZ).
Two large radio telescopes are prominent features of Camp Echo One, and Wilson comments on this during the movie, saying the radio telescopes must be a front for something more secretive. The two telescopes bear a striking resemblance to the 100-meter Green Bank Telescope at the U.S. National Science Foundation's Green Bank Observatory (GBO) and are no doubt a nod to the world's largest steerable radio telescope.
How does Green Bank get snow off its telescope?
However, there is another government facility in the NRQZ that could be a better comparison to the secretive Camp Echo One installation—the Sugar Grove Research Station in Pendleton County.
Sugar Grove Research Station, previously known as Sugar Grove U.S. Naval Radio Station or the Navy Information Operations Command Sugar Grove, was a communications research and development base for the U.S. Navy and other government agencies, according to the West Virginia Encyclopedia.
Because of this, very little public information exists online about the Sugar Grove station except that the Navy ceased operations at the site in 2015, though the National Security Agency (NSA) still operates part of the facility.
According to the WV Encyclopedia, the nature of the facility was revealed as part of Edward Snowden's controversial leaking of government documents in 2013, which revealed a large-scale surveillance program targeting U.S. citizens was being carried out by the U.S. government; for years, the site was allegedly being used to monitor satellite communications and cell phone traffic.
Today, the Sugar Grove campus appears to still be for sale by the Sugar Grove LLC. According to the property website, the Sugar Grove Station campus features housing for up to 400 residents, sports fields and courts, a swimming pool, a water treatment facility, a water tower, surveillance equipment like CCTV cameras and security checkpoints, administration buildings, a police and fire station, a youth activity center and even a bowling alley.
A map of the facility and labels of each building are available on the property website, along with interior pictures of many of the site's buildings.

The timeline order on Disney Plus makes it much easier to follow along and see when each of these titles are intended to take place. With several other installments in the works or headed to theaters, including The Fantastic Four: First Steps and the next two Avengers movies, it'll be interesting to see how these new titles will alter the timeline. Teachers travel to Morgantown to gain insight on oil and gas industry
MORGANTOWN, (WBOY) — More than 40 science teachers from across three different states took a trip to Morgantown Thursday to learn how they can teach their students about the oil and gas industry. The pilgrimage came as part of the Gas and Oil Association of West Virginia's 7th annual Science Teacher Workshop and teachers hope to take knowledge about the industry back with them in order to implement the subject into their curriculum. Look out for 'Skittles of the bird world' in West Virginia this summer 'A lot of times we end up with too many folks who are at the twilight of their careers so we arte constantly trying to get younger and younger people to take interest in the science, the STEM programs, get interested in the oil and gas industry at a young age so they can study it and hopefully end up employed and stay in this region,' Jim Crews with Marathon Petroleum said. Crews said that teachers who missed out on this year's workshop can still contact the Oil and Gas Association and get the training needed to implement the subject into their school's curriculum. 'Summer House' star West Wilson says it's 'weird' and 'bizarre' to navigate the attention on his personal life
When Summer House star West Wilson was in Toronto earlier this year, he shared with Yahoo Canada that he never watched last season's reunion, where he famously got frazzled having to address his relationship with costar Ciara Miller. This time around for the Summer House Season 9 reunion (on Hayu in Canada), Wilson came prepared with notes. "I don't think I'm very good at funnelling my thoughts," West told Yahoo Canada. "TV kind of helps, ... where everything is condensed." "This show is therapeutic in a way where you kind of have to deal with what's going on." Early in the Summer House reunion, we looked back at how Wilson was greeted by Miller in the house in Season 9, with Wilson also facing questions about what he said to The New York Times about their relationship, defending how he handled the breakup. Wilson apologized to Miller in this season's reunion, but she was quick to point out that if Wilson could comment on their relationship to the media, he should be able to talk to her honestly, face-to-face. While they don't get to a point of close friendship, there was a sense of understanding by the end of the reunion. With Wilson being relatively new to the reality TV space, there's certainly a lot to get comfortable with, not just in terms of sharing ones personal life on TV, but managing reactions and responses from fans of the show, and rumours spreading about who he could be romantically connected to next. "Weird to navigate. It's fun, until it's not," Wilson said. "It's bizarre. And nothing I've really been involved in has been that serious, but it's kind of become talking points, I guess, whether that's my fault or just how the internet works." "It hasn't been dating or breakups or anything. So it's all very juvenile. ...I think because I had a public breakup already, people are going to care no matter what. ... I feel like I'm still learning. A lot of this stuff I think I'm learning it by the day, for better or for worse. ... Now you have to be hyperaware of people being nosy, people doing research, people just caring more than I do." While several Summer House fans weren't on Wilson's side for how he handled the breakup with Miller, one interview he did earlier this year resulted in a lot of praise for the reality TV star and sports reporter. Back in March, Wilson spoke to Uncloseted Media about "manfluencers," toxic masculinity and voting for Kamala Harris in the last U.S. election. Wilson said he was "softly promoting" his liberal stance on political issues in the last American election, but stressed that he really wanted to make "positive" actions in addressing these topics publicly. "When I get negative feedback on stuff like this, ... it always makes me feel better about what I said to begin with," he explained. "So almost kind of like soft-launching where I stood politically, getting shit talk back, kept me moving forward, and more comfortable and confident in what I believe in." "I do think because I'm a white dude who has a cowboy dad and I'm from Missouri, I think a lot of people expect me to be a ... Trump-y redneck. ... I'm not a confrontational person, ... but I think now, it's not even really politics, it's just being a human. A lot of the feedback I've gotten that says, 'Thanks for doing this. Not a lot of people in your position do talk about it.' Made me feel good. If I can do anything positive right now, it's that."
