Nationwide protests planned against Trump's immigration crackdown and health care cuts
The 'Good Trouble Lives On' national day of action honors the late congressman and civil rights leader John Lewis. Protests are expected to be held along streets, at court houses and other public spaces. Organizers are calling for them to be peaceful.
'We are navigating one of the most terrifying moments in our nation's history,' Public Citizen co-president Lisa Gilbert said during an online news conference on Tuesday (July 15, 2025). 'We are all grappling with a rise of authoritarianism and lawlessness within our administration ... as the rights, freedoms and expectations of our very democracy are being challenged.'
Citizens on corporate power
Public Citizen is a nonprofit with a stated mission of taking on corporate power. It is a member of a coalition of groups behind Thursday's protests.
Major protests are planned in Atlanta and St. Louis, as well as Oakland, California, and Annapolis, Maryland.
Lewis first was elected to Congress in 1986. He died in 2020 at the age of 80 following an advanced pancreatic cancer diagnosis.
He was the youngest and last survivor of the Big Six civil rights activists, a group led by the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. In 1965, a 25-year-old Lewis led some 600 protesters in the Bloody Sunday march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama. Lewis was beaten by police, suffering a skull fracture.
Within days, King led more marches in the state, and President Lyndon Johnson pressed Congress to pass the Voting Rights Act that later became law.
'Get in good trouble, necessary trouble, and redeem the soul of America,' Lewis said in 2020 while commemorating the 1965 voting rights marches from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama.
Chicago will be the flagship city for Thursday's protests as demonstrators are expected to rally downtown in the afternoon.
Betty Magness, executive vice president of the League of Women Voters Chicago and one of the organizers of Chicago's event, said the rally will also include a candlelight vigil to honor Lewis.
Much of the rest of the rally will have a livelier tone, Magness said, adding 'we have a DJ who's gonna rock us with boots on the ground.'
Protest against deportations
Pushback against Mr. Trump so far in his second term has centered on deportations and immigration enforcement tactics
Earlier this month, protesters engaged in a tense standoff as federal authorities conducted mass arrests at two Southern California marijuana farms. One farmworker died after falling from a greenhouse roof during a chaotic raid.
Those raids followed Trump's extraordinary deployment of the National Guard outside federal buildings and to protect immigration agents carrying out arrests on Los Angeles. On June 8, thousands of protesters began taking to the streets in Los Angeles.
And organizers of the June 14 'No Kings' demonstrations said millions of people marched in hundreds of events from New York to San Francisco. Demonstrators labeled Trump as a dictator and would-be king for marking his birthday with a military parade.

She made a similar statement last month, calling it a common side effect of vigorous campaigning and physical interaction with supporters. Trump himself has previously claimed the bruise is a result of his dedication to meeting voters. 'It's from shaking hands with thousands of people,' he told Time magazine in December 2024. In April, the White House released the president's official health report, which claimed there were no major medical concerns. The report said Trump's 'blood flow to his extremities is unimpaired,' and that there were 'no concerning lesions or growths.' It also noted 'minor sun damage' to his skin but claimed his joints and muscles showed 'no swelling.'

He said that today, cooperation plays an active role in 98 per cent of rural areas, and the next 100 years will belong to cooperation. Shah said that cooperatives contribute approximately 20 per cent to the country's procurement of paddy and wheat, while 35 per cent of fertilizers and 30 per cent of sugar production is done through cooperatives. Over 20 per cent of fair price shops are also run through cooperatives. He added that 31 crore people are connected to cooperation through 8.5 lakh cooperative bodies. Meanwhile, former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot questioned the Home Minister over the alleged delay in Udaipur's Kanhaiya Lal case, pointing out that his government caught the culprits within four hours but the case is still pending even after three years. 'When will the family of the late Mr Kanhaiya Lal get justice? I want to ask Amit Shah ji, you have come to Rajasthan, you are welcome, but at least in today's meetings, give an answer to the people of the state, why hasn't this incident resulted in punishment for those people yet, why hasn't there been punishment till now? It's possible that if the Rajasthan government had handled it — if the SOG or the ATS had handled it — it's possible that by now they would have been punished with life imprisonment or the death penalty, something would have happened, but punishment would have been ensured, it was such a big case.'

Rahul Gandhi to inaugurate second death anniversary of Oommen Chandy
Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi will inaugurate a public meeting marking the second death anniversary of former Chief Minister and Congress leader Oommen Chandy here on Friday. Making the occasion an opportunity to mobilise its cadres ahead of the upcoming crucial elections, the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee has organised elaborate arrangements at Puthuppally, where the event is being held. KPCC president Sunny Joseph will preside over the event. During his visit, Mr. Gandhi will pay his respects at the tomb of the late Congress leader at St. George Orthodox Church at Puthuppally. He will also hand over the keys of 11 houses built by the Oommen Chandy Foundation to the beneficiaries and also launch the KPCC's charitable initiative in memory of Oommen Chandy, titled 'Smrithi Tharangam.' The Meenadom Sports Turf, a sports arena being developed as part of an anti-drug campaign, too will be inaugurated during the event. The organisers said a huge venue having a seating capacity of 10,000 people had been set up to accommodate the attendees. Meanwhile, the Manna Charitable Trust, headquartered in Thiruvananthapuram, will also organise various programmes and charity activities during July and August as part of Oommen Chandy's second death anniversary. According to Chandy's daughter and managing trustee of the trust, Mariya Oommen, free medical camps will be organised in all 14 districts as part of the initiatives. The visit of Mr. Gandhi to Kottayam is anticipated to significantly energise the party's rank and file ahead of the local body elections later this year and the Assembly elections next year.
