A plea for painting: David Hockney 25, at the Fondation Louis Vuitton, reviewed
The exhibition begins with a roomful of the paintings that made Hockney famous in the 1960s: his graffiti-style canvases, packed with secret codes and illicit kisses. The next gallery is full of the very different paintings that made him even more famous: swimming pools in sunshine and boys sprawled on beds. Gays straight on, square to the picture frame – images, pure and simple; no hidden hints, no text.
This gallery also contains a couple of the portraits that further spread his fame. Sadly, none of the drawings for these are included. In his painting of Christopher Isherwood, his bushy eyebrows curtain his eyes, but in the drawing, you see one pupil glaring out. The intensity of the writer's intelligence is lost in the softer brushwork, but caught in Hockney's darting, edgy line. Hockney is a superb draughtsman, and drawing is something he does all the time, but you'd barely know it from this exhibition. The occasional portrait sketch is included, and these are among the most moving images in the show, above all the drawing of his sister Margaret in 2013.
The main part of the exhibition is, nevertheless, an extraordinary visual feast: vast landscapes, panoramas and flowers in acrylic. And between the gallery displays, there are films and records of other projects – his opera sets and obsession with the history of perspective. One aspect of his work, apart from drawing, is however unfortunately nearly absent: photography. Only one is included, at the very end: 'Pearblossom Highway' (1986), a fascinating assembly of over 800 snaps of everything he could see from the litter at his feet to the mountains in the distance. The technique he then developed of collaging multiple images to create a whole scene explains why so many of his wall-size paintings are made up of mosaics of smaller eyefuls.
Photography is a key to understanding Hockney's art. It was his first interest in visual mechanisation, which flowered later with his work with iPads. I was once in his studio in 1995 when he was making a print of a photo he'd just taken of a vase of sunflowers propped up next to a painting that he'd done of the same subject as a get-well card. The painting, due to a trick of perspective, looked as though it was standing in front of the photo, radiating brightly in real space. I said he should call the print 'Photography is dead. Long live painting.' He did.
This whole exhibition can be seen, in a way, as a plea for painting, during an era when painting was being marginalised. But there is room for his iPad work too. The drawback here is that handcraft on the iPad is limited; lines drawn on it can express a kind of feeling I guess, but textures brushed in with a stylus usually look impersonal, manufactured. There's a room of these works near the end. My attention was held by one of a group of winter trees standing in a field of white tulips (one red). Their presence reminds us of the Hockney quote that's blazoned on the side of the building as we go in: 'Do remember they cannot cancel spring'. The work is called 'Small Trees' (2023).
Then, in a tiny dark room at the very end, there are four paintings painted specially for this show. And words are back in them, too. In his painting 'After Blake' – hanging below the steps that repeatedly spell out the phrase: 'Less is known than people think' – red curtains part to tell us 'It's the now that is eternal'. He painted himself painting himself in the centre of 'Play Within a Play Within a Play and Me with a Cigarette' (2024-25), between some daffodils and the bare sprig of a tree. There are no words in this picture, except for those on his lapel badge which read 'End Bossiness Soon'. Hockney is again spelling out what he really thinks and feels, as he did when he started, in his shadowy, pleading, gay graffiti. In this self-portrait, his eyes, for the first time, are lowered. They seem to say: let me be myself, as I face death; the deeply moving closing of an extraordinarily creative life.

Our new allotment is a place to bury hopes and dreams
T he idea was plucked from the top drawer of the parenting cupboard. Child C was spending too much time on the iPad. Plan A was to travel back to 1955 and kill baby Steve Jobs, but that was quickly dismissed on moral but mainly technological grounds. Plan B involved a different kind of time machine. When I was 11 I got an allotment. I don't know why — perhaps I liked the idea of having my own bit of land or maybe, because this was the 1980s, I thought I could flog some of the produce. I definitely remember enjoying it, though. I'd go up there after school and do battle with the goosegrass, which was much more fun than homework and, after a while, I had created a proper oasis. My butternut squash was the envy of the allotment association and life was just better before iPads.

Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 13 Your Apple gadgets have some handy AI tricks that you might be missing out on Credit: Apple 13 You can create a fun emoji for your bedtime stories Credit: Sean Keach 13 Then you can generate an entire bedtime story based on your virtual character Credit: Sean Keach The Sun can reveal five clever tricks that work using Apple Intelligence, and they only take a few seconds each. The only note is that you'll need an Apple gadget that actually supports Apple Intelligence. That includes: iPhone 15 Pro iPhone 15 Pro Max iPhone 16 iPhone 16 Plus iPhone 16 Pro iPhone 16 Pro Max iPhone 16e iPad Pro (M1 and later) iPad Air (M1 and later) iPad mini (A17 Pro) MacBook Air/Pro (M1 and later) iMac/Mac Mini (M1 and later) Mac Studio (M1 Max and later) Mac Pro (M2 Ultra) Apple AI Trick #1 – BEDTIME STORIES Your iPhone can create bedtime stories for kids. It's a perfect parenting hack. Just go into Messages, bring up the keyboard, tap on Genmoji, then create a funny character. Maybe it's a squirrel with a shovel or an elephant in a chef's hat. This will be your character. Now go into Notes, tap on Writing Tools, then choose Compose with ChatGPT, and ask for a short story about your elephant chef – and say they're going on an adventure. It'll create the story, which you can then illustrate by dropping the Genmoji at the top. Or you could even go into Apple's Image Playground app and make a full picture, then paste that in instead. It's perfect for bedtime because you can have a different story every night. Apple interview with Greg Joz Joswiak on new artificial intelligence, screening, hold assist, carplay, liquid glass and ios updates Apple AI Trick #2 – HOLIDAY PLANNER Another easy trick is letting Apple's AI plan your holiday – or at least the itinerary. This one works on iPhone and iPad, but we tried it on Mac. Just double-click the Command button on your keyboard to bring up Siri. Then type in your request, like asking for a three-day hiking trip in the Cotswolds. 13 You can type to Siri and ask for help with holiday planning Credit: Sean Keach 13 Siri can use ChatGPT to generate a holiday itinerary in seconds Credit: Sean Keach You could even ask for a budget-friendly holiday with cheap activities to save money. Let Siri send your request to ChatGPT and it'll make a full itinerary that you can drop straight into a document. And you can even generate a fun AI pic to go with it too using Apple's Image Playground feature. Apple AI Trick #3 – SKETCH EXPERT I'm hopeless at drawing, but AI isn't. HOW DOES CHATGPT WORK ON IPHONE? Here's the official guidance from Apple... "Siri can tap into ChatGPT for certain requests, including questions about photos or documents," Apple explained. "And with Compose in Writing Tools, you can create and illustrate original content from scratch. "You control when ChatGPT is used and will be asked before any of your information is shared. Anyone can access ChatGPT for free, without creating an account. "ChatGPT subscribers can connect accounts to access paid features within these experiences." Picture Credit: Apple There's a clever trick that turns your own sketches into art – and it works using the Apple Pencil on an iPad. Draw something rough in the Notes app – we sketched a terrarium – and then write what it is next to it. Now go into the Apple Pencil menu, choose the AI button, and circle your creation. And in just a few seconds, it'll transform what you've drawn into a proper sketch. You can even swipe through several options to find the perfect one. 13 Even a very average sketch can be transformed using Apple's AI Credit: Sean Keach 13 You can convert your drawings into impressive pieces of art in the Notes app Credit: Sean Keach It's a nice way to illustrate your notes quickly. Another handy tip: if you draw a shape like a square, circle, or star, and leave the Apple Pencil tip pressed to the screen at the end, it'll neaten it up for you. So your rough circle will snap to become perfectly round in an instant. This also works with drawing arrows too. Apple AI Trick #4 – PHOTO CLEAN-UP Fourth is Clean Up, which is built into Apple's default Photos app on your iPhone. 13 You can use Clean Up to remove almost any object from a scene Credit: Sean Keach It's a handy way to scrub unwanted objects from your pics. Maybe you've snapped Big Ben but there's a tourist in the way, or someone has photobombed your perfect selfie. Just go into the photo, tap on the edit button, and then choose the Clean Up option. Then you can tap on, rub over, or circle the object that you want to delete. 13 If you spot something unwanted in your photo, just get rid of it virtually Credit: Sean Keach 13 Just circle, scrub or tap the object that you want to remove Credit: Sean Keach 13 Clean Up will delete the object in seconds – replacing it with background Credit: Sean Keach Give it a few seconds and it should vanish from view, replaced by what the AI thinks should've been in the spot. If it doesn't work perfectly on the first go, you can give it a few more passes with Clean Up to get it right. And you can always revert back to the original image at any time if you don't like the edited version. Apple AI Trick #5 – SHOPPING HACK Lastly, there's a handy trick called Visual Intelligence that's great for shopping. First, you'll want to load it up. One way is to go into Settings > Action Button and set it to activate from your Action Button. Or if you have an iPhone with a Camera Control button, you can just hold that down instead. Now snap a pic of an object. We tried it on a Labubu, which is a massively popular collectible toy. 13 You can scan almost anything using Visual Intelligence – and then see if Google can find it online Credit: Sean Keach 13 You can find the cheapest prices or lookalike alternatives for loads of products, including clothes and furniture Credit: Sean Keach But it also works just fine on clothes or furniture that you like too. The AI will identify what it's seeing, and then show you a load of places that you can buy it online. You can then find the best price for the exact item you're looking at. And it'll usually also surface similar-looking items if you snap clothes or furniture, so it's a clever way to find cheap 'dupes' of expensive items that you like.
