KFSHRC's Organ Transplant Center of Excellence Wins Innovation Award
King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center (KFSHRC) Organ Transplant Center of Excellence (OTCoE) has received the Innovation Award in the Regional Institute Category at the Abu Dhabi Global Healthcare Week (ADGHW) 2025, in recognition of its pioneering contributions to transplant innovation and regional impact on patient care. Consultant of Transplant, Hepatobiliary, and Pancreatic Surgery Dr. Yasser Al Nemary accepted the award on behalf of OTCoE during the ADGHW ceremony held at the ADNEC Center in Abu Dhabi.
Since 2011, OTCoE has performed more than 6,600 organ transplants, including kidney, liver, lung, and pancreas procedures, reaching a record high with 1,096 organ transplants. It has also achieved several surgical firsts, including the world's first fully robotic liver transplant and the region's first robotic pancreas transplant performed on a type 1 diabetes patient, SPA reported.
With over 5,000 kidney transplants completed and 500 successful paired kidney exchanges under its pioneering Kidney Paired Donation Program, OTCoE is a regional and global reference for multidisciplinary collaboration and patient-centered innovation.
"This award affirms our drive to transform organ transplant through innovation and precision, powered by a team relentlessly committed to advancing patient care," said OTCoE Executive Director Dr. Dieter Broering.
The ADGHW Innovation Awards celebrate transformative achievements in healthcare, spotlighting institutions that improve patient outcomes, expand access, and drive progress through innovation.
For the third consecutive year, KFSHRC has been ranked first in the Middle East and Africa and 15th globally in the list of the world's top 250 Academic Medical Centers. According to the 2025 Brand Finance rankings, it is recognized as the most valuable healthcare brand in the Kingdom and the Middle East. Additionally, it was included in Newsweek magazine's World's Best Smart Hospitals list for 2025.

The MSU, unique in the Middle East, is fully equipped with a specialized medical team including a neurologist, cardiologist, respiratory therapist, emergency nurse, radiologist, and paramedic, along with a CT scanner. This advanced capability significantly enhances the efficiency of on-site diagnosis and treatment. The Ugandan pilgrim received critical treatment within an impressive 16 minutes, one-sixth of the internationally accepted standard time of 60 minutes for such cases. His condition has since improved, and he is now undergoing medical rehabilitation to complete his Hajj rituals. This rapid and efficient response exemplifies Saudi Arabia's integrated healthcare system, which aims to boost service quality and accessibility with the highest efficiency. Such efforts align directly with the objectives of the Health Sector Transformation Program and the Pilgrim Experience Program, key pillars of Saudi Vision 2030, focused on providing advanced healthcare and ensuring pilgrims perform their rituals safely.

KFSHRC Implants Region's First Smart Brain Device to Improve Neurological Disease Management
The King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center (KFSHRC) in Riyadh has performed a one of a kind procedure in the Middle East, implanting an innovative smart device inside the brain to improve control over chronic neurological disorders, according to a KFSHRC press release. The device detects abnormal electrical activity and delivers precise electrical impulses to affected areas—helping reduce symptoms, minimize reliance on medication, and improve patients' quality of life, autonomy, and health stability. This innovation empowers patients to better manage neurological symptoms and potentially reduce medication doses by up to 50%, alleviating side effects and enhancing daily life, particularly for individuals living with Parkinson's disease, epilepsy, and movement disorders, SPA reported. The device's built-in artificial intelligence instantly analyses brain signals to detect abnormal activity patterns and automatically responds by delivering targeted electrical stimulation to restore neural balance. This enables highly precise, adaptive treatment that adjusts to the patient's condition in real time—without the need for continuous manual intervention by a medical team. While the device begins to show benefits within the first few weeks after implantation, optimal outcomes require a fine-tuning period of one to three months, during which the electrical responses are calibrated based on real-time brain signals captured by the device. The procedure uses minimally invasive techniques that take only three to five hours, avoiding large surgical incisions. This reduces recovery time, minimizes complications, and supports a quicker return to normal daily life. "This achievement highlights KFSHRC's ongoing progress in harnessing artificial intelligence and medical innovation to deliver high-precision, specialized care, meeting patient needs while shaping an advanced therapeutic model for the region and beyond," the release read.
