Sinner targets golden era after Wimbledon win over Alcaraz

The Sun2 days ago
JANNIK SINNER has declared his best tennis is still ahead after dethroning Carlos Alcaraz to win his maiden Wimbledon title. The Italian world number one overcame his Spanish rival 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 in a gripping final, avenging his French Open defeat last month.
Sinner's victory ended Alcaraz's two-year reign at the All England Club and marked his fourth Grand Slam triumph. The 23-year-old has now reached the last four major finals, winning three, but insists he is far from peaking.
'I don't think I'm at my best because at 23 I don't think you can be in your best shape ever. So hopefully I can keep improving,' Sinner said. 'I keep looking up to Carlos because even today I felt like he was doing couple of things better than I did.'
The win carried extra significance for Sinner, who had lost five straight matches against Alcaraz before Sunday's breakthrough. Their rivalry has dominated men's tennis, with the pair sharing the last seven Grand Slam titles between them.
Sinner admitted the mental challenge of bouncing back from his Roland Garros collapse, where he squandered a two-set lead and three championship points against Alcaraz, had been immense.
'This is the part where I'm the proudest because it really has not been easy,' he said. 'Only me and the people who are close to me know exactly what we have been through on and off the court.'
Coach Darren Cahill believes the Sinner-Alcaraz duel could define the next decade of tennis, though cautioned against premature comparisons to the Federer-Nadal-Djokovic era.
'It's difficult to compare this rivalry to what we've just had. It's been a golden age in tennis with Novak and Roger and Rafa,' Cahill said. 'These guys still have a ways to go, but they've started incredibly well.'-AFP

Rugby-Springboks number eight Jasper Wiese banned for four matches

(Reuters) -South Africa No. 8 Jasper Wiese has been suspended for four matches following a headbutt on Italian prop Danilo Fischetti in the Springboks' 45-0 victory on Saturday, ruling him out of the side's eagerly-anticipated clash with New Zealand at Eden Park. Wiese, who is the Springboks' first choice option at the back of the scrum, a position where they have several injury concerns, will sit out Saturday's fixture against Georgia in Nelspruit, and the first three matches of the Rugby Championship. South Africa start the defence of their southern hemisphere title with two home games against Australia, before a visit to Auckland, where they have not beaten New Zealand since 1937. Wiese will be available for the second test against New Zealand in Wellington on September 13. The burly back row received a permanent red card from referee Andrew Brace after a headbutt on Danilo Fischetti as the two squared up during a stoppage in play after 21 minutes of Saturday's test in Gqeberha. (Wikimedia Commons pic) SINGAPORE: The women's 10km open water race at the world swimming championships in Singapore has been postponed because of poor water quality, governing body World Aquatics said today. A review of the course at Sentosa Island found water quality levels 'exceeding acceptable thresholds', with organisers making the decision to postpone 'in the utmost interest of athlete safety'. Advertisement The women's 10km race was set to take place this morning but has been pushed back to Wednesday, when the men's event will also be held. 'World Aquatics regrets the inconvenience caused by the postponement and acknowledges the commitment and preparation of all athletes, coaches and teams,' World Aquatics said in a statement. 'The health and safety of participants remain the highest priority in all competition-related decisions.' World Athletics said tests had 'consistently' shown the water quality to be acceptable but that a sample taken on Sunday went over the limit. Pool swimming events at the world championships begin on July 27. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? World's oldest marathon runner dies aged 114 in road accident

NEW DELHI, India (AFP): India's Fauja Singh, believed to be the world's oldest distance runner, has died in a road accident aged 114, his biographer said on Tuesday (July 15). Singh, an Indian-born British national, nicknamed the "Turbaned Tornado", died after being hit by a vehicle in Punjab state's Jalandhar district on Monday. "My Turbaned Tornado is no more," Fauja's biographer Khushwant Singh wrote on X. "He was struck by an unidentified vehicle... in his village, Bias, while crossing the road. Rest in peace, my dear Fauja." Singh did not have a birth certificate but his family said he was born on April 1, 1911. He ran full 42km marathons till the age of 100. His last race was a 10km event at the 2013 Hong Kong Marathon when 101, where he finished in one hour, 32 minutes and 28 seconds. He became an international sensation after taking up distance running at the ripe old age of 89, after the death of his wife and one of his sons, inspired by seeing marathons on television. Although widely regarded as the world's oldest marathon runner, he was not certified by Guinness World Records as he could not prove his age, saying that birth certificates did not exist when he was born under British colonial rule in 2011. Singh was a torchbearer for the Olympics at Athens 2004 and London 2012, and appeared in advertisements with sports stars such as David Beckham and Muhammad Ali. His strength and vitality were credited to a routine of farm walks and a diet including Indian sweet "laddu" packed with dry fruits and home-churned curd. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute on social media. "Fauja Singh was extraordinary because of his unique persona and the manner in which he inspired the youth of India on a very important topic of fitness," said Modi on X "He was an exceptional athlete with incredible determination. Pained by his passing away. My thoughts are with his family and countless admirers around the world." – AFP Fauja Singh ji, 114 years old, a living example of determination and spirit. At 93, he ran a full marathon ,defeating every odd life threw at him. A man who never gave up, yet lost to a tragic road accident. Rest in peace legend.
