Politics Over IPL Final? Trinamool's Big Charge Against BCCI's Decision

The West Bengal government on Sunday criticised the Board of Control for Cricket in India's (BCCI) decision to relocate the playoff and final matches of the Indian Premier League (IPL) from Kolkata to Gujarat, claiming that it was influenced by political considerations.
"I previously addressed the media during a press conference regarding the political motivations behind the decision to relocate the playoffs and final matches from Eden Gardens. Recent developments have further illuminated this issue," State Sports Minister Aroop Biswas claimed in a statement issued late on Sunday evening.
"The satellite data utilised by the BCCI and the IPL governing body, which was presented as a meteorological assessment, indicated a likelihood of rain in Kolkata during this period. Consequently, the playoffs and final were moved to Gujarat," Mr Biswas said.
However, it has become increasingly evident that this satellite report was not solely based on weather conditions but was influenced by political considerations, he claimed.
"Today, it is clear that cricket fans in Kolkata have been unjustly deprived of this significant sporting event due to political motives. The same satellite that forecasted potential rain in Kolkata failed to recognise the possibility of rain at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Gujarat," Mr Biswas said.
He said this "discrepancy underscores" that the decision was not driven by meteorological factors, "but rather by a politically motivated agenda aimed at sidelining Bengal."
The BCCI had earlier announced that the second qualifier and the IPL final, scheduled to take place on June 1 and 3, respectively, will be held at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad instead of Kolkata's Eden Gardens.
Mr Biswas had said last week that the BCCI's decision violated the IPL's rule that the previous year's champions' home ground would host the final.

Chinnaswamy Stadium, where a stampede claimed the lives of at least 11 fans and injured several others. After RCB's long-awaited first IPL title win on June 3 in Ahmedabad, the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) had organised a felicitation ceremony in Bengaluru on Wednesday. Thousands of fans gathered outside the Chinnaswamy Stadium, hoping to catch a glimpse of their heroes. However, as the crowd swelled, the situation became unmanageable. Police resorted to a lathi-charge to control the crowd, leading to panic and chaos. Seven people were killed in the resulting stampede, while several others were rushed to Bowring Hospital and Vydehi Superspeciality Hospital for treatment. "People will not forget this —or Virat Kohli. While people were dying outside, there was a celebration inside. It's truly shocking and disheartening. The families of the dead should consider suing RCB and the state government for ₹100 crore for this tragic is also shirking responsibility," former Indian cricketer Madan Lal told IANS. Earlier in the day, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah addressed the media after the incident and announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh for the family of the dead. Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar defended the arrangements, stating, 'We had arranged for 5,000 police personnel. We couldn't use force on such a young, vibrant crowd.' The authorities have confirmed that the bodies of two persons are at Bowring Hospital and that of four others at Vaidehi Hospital. Six people are being treated in the ICU of the Vaidehi Hospital and three are admitted to the ICU. The government of Karnataka had earlier cancelled the victory parade from Vidhana Soudha to Chinnaswamy Cricket Stadium, citing security reasons.
