Big change for Woolworths shoppers as digital trolleys launch in Victoria and Queensland after trial run in NSW

Woolworths has revealed a big change for shoppers in Queensland and Victoria as its digital trolley initiative is launched in selected stores.
The Scan&Go trolleys were first introduced in August last year as a trial across ten NSW supermarkets, including locations in Kellyville, Lane Cove, North Parramatta and Windsor.
Alongside the launch in Victoria and Queensland, Woolworths has confirmed the digital-era shopping method will now make its way into additional NSW stores.
The Scan&Go system operates by attaching a tablet-like device, which can be retrieved from a charging wall at the front of the supermarket, to an existing shopping trolley.
Customers can then scan and bag their items as they make their way down the shopping aisles.
The system means shoppers can also track their purchases in "real time", which can help stick to a grocery budget.
Customers just need to take their items to a self-serve checkout to pay.
Shoppers can unlock the tablet devices from the charging wall with their Woolworths Everyday Rewards card.
Woolworths said the Scan&Go trolleys will land in an additional 25 stores across Victoria, Queensland and NSW.
In Victoria, shoppers will be able to use the system at Chirnside Park, Malvern, Mornington East, Rye, St Helena, Thrift Park, as well as Moonee Ponds from September.
Queensland Woolies shoppers will see the trolleys in Burleigh Heads, Caloundra, Capalaba Park, Currimundi, Nambour, Noosa, Northlakes and Warner.
For NSW customers, the trolleys will be accessible in Neutral Bay Village, Richmond, Menai, Mortdale, Revesby, Hornsby, Rutherford, Erina, Green Hills and Kotara.
The Scan&Go trolleys are already available in the NSW stores of Windsor, Kellyville, Oran Park, Kellyville Grove, Kellyville North, Lane Cove, The Ponds, Warringah Mall, Schofields Town Centre and North Parramatta.
In a statement on Thursday, Woolworths360 managing director Rob McCartney described the Scan&Go trolleys as a convenient option for shoppers.
"After the initial roll out to ten stores across New South Wales, customers have told us using the Scan&Go Trolley has resulted in a faster and more convenient shopping experience," he said.
'We have noticed that over seventy percent of Scan&Go Trolley users are repeat customers, which supports our expansion into Victoria and Queensland respectively.
"To add, young families in particular have told us Scan&Go Trolley is helping them balance their budget, as they can track their spending in real time."
The Scan&Go system was originally introduced as an app in 2018.

A man who launched a new business at 50, which is now stocked in Woolworths stores across the country, is living proof it's never too late to follow your dreams, says his daughter. Sam Barak started allergen-free food company Well & Good in his garage in Melbourne back in 2005 after discovering a family friend's child had been diagnosed with coeliac disease and had very limited food options. Approximately 1 in 70 Australians are estimated to have coeliac disease. Today the condition appears to be more common, though it's likely that is due to a combination of increased awareness and better diagnostic testing. Mr Barak it seems was ahead of the game, forging a food brand that created products for those who unable to eat everyday ingredients because of allergies and special dietary needs. 'He turned our family garage into a test lab kitchen, he put a sink in and some plumbing. He was a food developer and had worked in the industry a long time,' his daughter Shila, who is the brand's business development manager, told 'All the stars aligned.' The then 50-year-old dad started the gluten free business, and was 'made fun of' by his children for the idea. But, in the last 20 years, all three have been employed by the booming business as it catering for those with allergies soared in demand. The business employs 30 staff, has its own manufacturing bakery in Bayside and has been available in supermarkets such as Woolworths since just before Covid. Landing the huge supermarket deal has opened a whole new door for the business and allowed more people to access its product range. Kati Keksi, who runs Your Gluten Free Guide, regularly shares news of new gluten free products in Australian supermarkets. She's recently shared the fact that Woolworths now stocks Well & Good's Rustic Ciabatta, Soft White Roll and Pizza Flour Mix. Social media users were quick to share an outpouring of love for the brand. 'Pizza mix is fantastic. And I've used the bread mix for pizza too,' one said. One added: 'The lemon coconut cake is delicious!!' 'I have got the pizza mix at my local Woolies the last two weeks. I forgot I brought it last week to try it and brought it again this week. Well I guess I am well stocked for a while,' one shared. One said: 'Yeah hotdog buns or just long buns would be great.' 'We regularly order this brand online. They are quick and reasonably priced if you buy in bulk,' one said. One commented: 'What in the world is going on New items coming left and right Love it! and freeze.' 'I just talked to my family about what am I going to do when I have soup and I want bread to dip … I made soup yesterday and I now see this HAHAHA happy for the gf community, not happy this drop wasn't released sooner,' one said. It's hard to make a name for yourself in the food industry — let alone in a space as small as the allergen market. Shila said this is partially because of her father's tenacity and hard working nature. 'He does 18 hour days sometimes. He's an intense, committed, hardworking human being,' Shila said. 'We all work together well in our team.' Another reason is the fact the business has been 'really reliable' and manufacture its own products — something Shila said is a 'big difference' in comparison to other retailers. It also does food service 'quite well'. 'We've been successful because we've been consistent, we've always worked on improving our products and listening to our consumers. We're very emotive. We really put the consumer first,' she said. 'Not everyone's going to love our products, and we don't always get it right, but we always try to make amends if we don't.' Mr Barak is turning 70 this year, and his daughter said the 'legend' is living proof that it is never too late to chase your dreams. Looking ahead, Shila said she'd really love to see Well & Good do more in retail, such as offering more 'finished product'. Currently the brand's Lemon Coconut Cake Mix is one of its most popular items. 'It's not new to us but it's a flavour we kind of got to market first, and there wasn't a lot of that flavour around,' she said. 'And now I'm started to see that absolutely everywhere.' She said its plain, self raising flour is hands down its most purchased product, saying it was formulated in a particular way so it was very close to the original. Shila was tight lipped on any new products that the business was working on, but said the aim was to help everyone access a wide range of food. Shila said the market for gluten free products is growing incrementally, as more people are diagnosed with coeliac disease, but also people who just want to expand their food options. Well & Good will be featured at the Gluten Free Expo in Sydney on August 16 and 17 at Randwick Racecourse. Shila revealed the expo was set to be buzzing with a lot of exhibitors. She revealed Well & Good would be sampling its new pizza bread and essentially its whole cake range.

The numbers The Australian sharemarket hit a fresh record high every day this week and is closing in on the 9000 milestone, with Friday's session carried by energy, banking, and mining giants. The S&P/ASX 200 gained 64.8 points, or 0.7 per cent, to close at 8938.6, with each day this week finishing higher than the last. Friday's gains came despite a middling session on Wall Street driven by a disappointing report that said US inflation at the wholesale level was worse last month than economists expected. The lifters Financials were one of the best-performing sectors of the day, climbing nearly 1.1 per cent. The big banks, which were mixed earlier in the day, all finished higher: Westpac gained 2.1 per cent, ANZ Bank rose 1.8 per cent, NAB added 0.8 per cent and even the Commonwealth Bank rose 0.6 per cent. Mining was another outperforming sector, finishing 1.1 per cent higher. Rio Tinto gained 1.4 per cent and Fortescue rose 1.3 per cent, while BHP lifted 1.1 per cent. Loading Energy stocks also rose (1.1 per cent). Santos added 1.8 per cent and Woodside added 0.2 per cent. Petrol and diesel supplier Ampol jumped 7.7 per cent after announcing a major expansion plan with the acquisition of British fuel giant EG Group's Australian petrol station network. If the $1.1 billion deal gains regulatory approval, Ampol, formerly known as Caltex Australia, would add EG's 500 fuel sites to its business, enabling it to fast-track the roll-out unstaffed, self-service petrol stations under its U-GO brand.

For anyone who's ever wandered the aisles searching for a niche cooking ingredient or mustered the courage to ask a store assistant where the pickles are, the supermarket's 'Product Finder' feature is the tool you've always wished existed. It's understood to have launched in October last year and is now available in 300 Woolworths stores across New South Wales. It allows shoppers to locate items instantly, without needing to rely on the laminated aisle directories. How it works By switching the app into 'in-store' mode and setting your local Woolworths as your preferred store, you'll then see the Product Finder tile on the home screen. Customers can then either type or speak the name of the item they're looking for. The app will then display the product, along with related items, and tell you exactly which aisle it's in. If you're happy to share your phone's location, there's an even more advanced option. The app can show you a detailed map of the store and function like GPS, guiding you straight to the product you're after. It even integrates with Olive, the supermarket's AI voice assistant, so shoppers can verbally ask where to find something without touching their screen. Woolworths say it's a tool built for convenience A Woolworths spokesperson told that, 'Over one million Woolworths customers now rely on the Woolworths app as an essential part of their shopping routine as they use it to manage their shop both online and in our aisles. 'Once users have set their preferred store in the app, customers can access their local store floor plan to easily navigate and find their favourite products more quickly and conveniently,' they said. Shoppers respond Reactions from shoppers have been mixed. Some say they'll stick to asking a store employee for help or referring to the printed directories at the end of the aisles. However, others have praised the feature as a 'game-changer' that'll 'help cut down time and mental effort' while shopping. 'There's nothing worse than pacing up and down the aisles looking for something specific, only to realise it's back in the first aisle I looked in,' one person told 'I sometimes use the laminated cards, but they don't have everything on them and only show the basics, so this will be great,' another said. A third shopper added: 'I would definitely use it in a store I am not familiar with. How handy'. And a busy mum-of-three said it would be 'perfect for those moments when you're rushing into a store for a specific item – something you don't usually cook with or a new product'. Given that Woolworths stocks an average of 20,000 products in each store, this new feature is sure to become popular.
