Canadian Open: Home Hope Victoria Mboko, Naomi Osaka Set Up Championship Clash
Osaka posted a 6-2, 7-6 (9/7) victory over Denmark's Clara Tauson, while Canadian teenage sensation Mboko battled past Elena Rybakina in a 1-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7/4) come-from-behind win.
Naomi Osaka will take on home hope Victoria Mboko in the final of the WTA Canadian Open in Montreal after the two players secured their berth in the championship clash of the event.
Osaka posted a 6-2, 7-6 (9/7) victory over Denmark's Clara Tauson, while Canadian teenage sensation Mboko battled past Elena Rybakina in a 1-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7/4) come-from-behind win.
The 18-year-old wild card thrived on the crowd's energy, attributing her perseverance to ecstatic supporters after a fall left her with a sore right wrist in the third set of her first tour-level semi-final.
Mboko, who defeated top-seeded French Open champion Coco Gauff in the fourth round, didn't let it hinder her.
After losing an early break in the third set, she refused to back down, relying on her forehand and saving a match point as she broke Rybakina in the 10th game to level the set.
A couple of untimely double faults allowed ninth-seeded Rybakina to break back for a 6-5 lead, but the ninth seed from Kazakhstan was broken at love in the next game, setting the stage for tiebreaker drama.
'After I had that fall, I wasn't in the greatest spirits, but I'm happy that I kept my composure and was patient at the right moments," said Mboko, who won the last three points of a decider she described as 'stressful".
'Anything can happen," an exhausted Mboko beamed as the crowd's cheers rained down on her.
'Unfortunately, I fell, but I had everyone supporting me and pushing me."
Mboko started the season ranked outside the top 300 but had worked her way up to 85th by competing in lower-level tournaments.
She is assured of breaking into the top 40 regardless of the result against Osaka, a former world number one who has struggled to find consistency since returning from maternity leave in 2024.
Osaka looked re-energised this week after a coaching shakeup and breezed through the first set against Tauson.
However, Tauson twice regained a break in the second set, pushing it to a tiebreaker where she had chances to level the match after taking a 6-4 lead.
Unable to convert her set points, the Dane saved one match point to make it 7-7, but Osaka won the next two to seal the victory and reach her first final in a WTA 1000 level event since Miami in 2022.

Double Olympic Gold Medallist Viktor Axelsen Withdraws From BWF World Championships
Last Updated: Viktor Axelsen, double Olympic gold medallist, has withdrawn from BWF World Championships because of injury rehab. Double Olympic gold medallist Viktor Axelsen has withdrawn from the upcoming BWF World Championships, citing rehabilitation from injury. The tournament is scheduled to start on August 25 in Paris and the star Danish shuttler took to Instagram to inform of his absence. Axelsen has been out of competitive badminton since undergoing surgery three months ago to treat a herniated disc. Axelsen confirmed that he has not recovered in time to compete in the upcoming tournament in Paris. 'After careful consultation with my medical team, I've been advised to dedicate more time to my rehabilitation. As a result, I unfortunately won't be able to get tournament-ready in time to compete safely at the upcoming World Championships," Axelsen wrote on his Instagram story. 'While it's tough to miss such a big event, I'm not discouraged. On the contrary, I'm highly motivated to keep pushing forward with my rehab and set myself a new goal to come back stronger," Axelsen said. Axelsen, 31, hasn't competed on the tour since suffering a second-round exit at the European Championships in April. Axelsen started the year with a title victory at the India Open in New Delhi but faced a surprise first-round exit at the All England Open. Once ranked inside the top 5 earlier this year, Axelsen has now slipped to World No. 18. A world champion in 2017 and 2022, the star Danish shuttler was knocked out in the quarters by HS Prannoy at last year's edition of the tournament, held in Copenhagen. Axelsen will now shift his focus to a full recovery and plan his comeback with an eye on the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Having won gold in Tokyo and defended his title in Paris, Axelsen will now be aiming for a historic hat-trick in Los Angeles. From India, Lakshya Sen and HS Prannoy are expected to represent the country in the men's singles. tags : bwf world championships viktor axelsen view comments Location : New Delhi, India, India First Published: August 07, 2025, 20:42 IST News sports » badminton » Double Olympic Gold Medallist Viktor Axelsen Withdraws From BWF World Championships Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. 'Cut Him Some Slack': Dinesh Karthik Hits Out At Jasprit Bumrah's Critics
Last Updated: Dinesh Karthik has defended ace India pacer Jasprit Bumrah, requesting critics to recognise his significant impact on the game. Former India cricketer Dinesh Karthik has said that critics should cut some slack to ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah and it is not his mistake that India fail to win when he plays, adding that because he is so impactful that others pale in comparison to him, after India finished with a 2-2 scoreline in the five-Test series against England. Speaking to Cricbuzz, Karthik came to Bumrah's defence and emphasised his crucial role in the Indian cricket team. 'You have to look at it from Jasprit Bumrah's point of view. I think that these kinds of wins, the way the series has panned out, the way the young team has fought, will help him in his career," Karthik said. 'I believe Bumrah will be very proud of this young bowling attack and knowing him, he is not someone who shies away from pressure, big matches. Boss, he is in the ground, as a captain, any big moment, you go to Jasprit Bumrah, you want a wicket, go to Jasprit Bumrah, you want a 5-an over in a T20 match, you go to Jasprit Bumrah," Karthik added. 'Now this stat of when he doesn't play, India win. It's not his mistake. He is so impactful that others 'Bumrah started well, got five wickets in the first innings of the first Test. He did not play the second Test, but played in the third and the fourth. Again, in (one of) those two Tests, he got (a) five-wicket (haul)," Tendulkar said while speaking on Reddit. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Delhi government announces dedicated department for sports and youth affairs
Agency: PTI Last Updated: New Delhi, Aug 7 (PTI) Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Thursday announced the establishment of a new dedicated department for sports and youth affairs aimed at nurturing young athletes. She made the announcement while interacting with children from the Delhi Olympic Association, various government schools, and sports training centres at the Delhi Assembly. The chief minister also announced the establishment of sports coaching centres across Delhi to ensure that no athlete is left behind due to a lack of access or resources. 'Every child in Delhi, regardless of their background, will now have the chance to receive professional training and pursue their sporting dreams," she added. Gupta emphasised that the new department will focus exclusively on supporting and developing the potential of young athletes and the youth in the city. 'Our athletes deserve more than applause — they deserve infrastructure, respect, and long-term institutional support," she asserted. Gupta recalled how, upon assuming office, she was moved by the dedication of Delhi's athletes, who, despite their perseverance, lacked adequate recognition and institutional support. Under this new policy, Olympic medal winners from Delhi will receive cash awards of Rs 7 crore for gold, Rs 5 crore for silver, and Rs 3 crore for bronze, making these the highest cash rewards offered by any Indian state. Additionally, athletes will now have the opportunity to secure Grade A, B, and C government jobs, ensuring long-term career prospects. 'These initiatives are not merely incentives," she noted. 'They are foundational tools to empower our youth and help them chase their dreams with dignity and support. Our stadiums, long neglected, will also be renovated with state-of-the-art facilities, and the newly formed department will oversee all such developments," she added.
