Double Olympic Gold Medallist Viktor Axelsen Withdraws From BWF World Championships
Viktor Axelsen, double Olympic gold medallist, has withdrawn from BWF World Championships because of injury rehab.
Double Olympic gold medallist Viktor Axelsen has withdrawn from the upcoming BWF World Championships, citing rehabilitation from injury. The tournament is scheduled to start on August 25 in Paris and the star Danish shuttler took to Instagram to inform of his absence.
Axelsen has been out of competitive badminton since undergoing surgery three months ago to treat a herniated disc.
Axelsen confirmed that he has not recovered in time to compete in the upcoming tournament in Paris.
'After careful consultation with my medical team, I've been advised to dedicate more time to my rehabilitation. As a result, I unfortunately won't be able to get tournament-ready in time to compete safely at the upcoming World Championships," Axelsen wrote on his Instagram story.
'While it's tough to miss such a big event, I'm not discouraged. On the contrary, I'm highly motivated to keep pushing forward with my rehab and set myself a new goal to come back stronger," Axelsen said.
Axelsen, 31, hasn't competed on the tour since suffering a second-round exit at the European Championships in April.
Axelsen started the year with a title victory at the India Open in New Delhi but faced a surprise first-round exit at the All England Open. Once ranked inside the top 5 earlier this year, Axelsen has now slipped to World No. 18.
A world champion in 2017 and 2022, the star Danish shuttler was knocked out in the quarters by HS Prannoy at last year's edition of the tournament, held in Copenhagen.
Axelsen will now shift his focus to a full recovery and plan his comeback with an eye on the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
Having won gold in Tokyo and defended his title in Paris, Axelsen will now be aiming for a historic hat-trick in Los Angeles.
From India, Lakshya Sen and HS Prannoy are expected to represent the country in the men's singles.

" Woakes Hai Kya Tu?": Shreyas Iyer Takes Hilarious Dig At England Pacer In Video With PBKS Teammate
Punjab Kings (PBKS) captain Shreyas Iyer was recently seen enjoying a game of indoor cricket at his apartment alongside his 2025 IPL teammate Shashank Singh. The duo engaged in round two of light-hearted Super Over challenge, with Iyer needing to survive 6 balls against Shashank's bowling. IPL 2025 was a memorable season for the Kings as they made it to the Playoffs and the final after a hiatus of 11 years. However, they lost against Royal Challengers Bengaluru by six runs in the summit clash. In the video posted on Instagram, the friendly contest began with Shashank briefing his skipper on the field setup. The conversation between the duo went on as follows: Shashank: "Yeh bhi out nahin hai?" (This is not out either?) Shreyas: "Sirf appreciate kar, six hai yeh. (Juat appreciate, it's a six.) Shashank then warned him:"Ab aayega short ball." (The short ball is up next.) Iyer humorously asked Shashank, "Woakes hai kya tu?" (Are you Woakes), when he mentioned about bowling a short ball. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Punjab Kings (@punjabkingsipl) For the unversed, England pacer Chris Woakes troubled India batters with his short deliveries in the recently-concluded five-match Test series. The Punjab kings franchise shared the entertaining video on Instagram, showcasing the fun bonding session between the two teammates. Talking about Iyer, the ignored India star is reportedly set to make a comeback in the international team from the Asia Cup 2025, which will kick-start from September 9. Shreyas Iyer was India's top-scorer in the Champions Trophy (243 in 5 matches) win. Though, the Punjab Kings captain has represented India in all formats, currently he only plays in ODIs. "We need Iyer's class and experience in the middle order in all formats. It's something which we missed in England during the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. The selectors are aware that Iyer is an excellent player of spin bowling, which will be crucial in a home season that involves four Tests - two each against West Indies and South Africa," sources told TOI.

Sanju Samson Breaks Silence On Leaving Rajasthan Royals: 'It Really Means...'
Last Updated: Amid the rumours of parting ways with Rajasthan Royals, Sanju Samson broke his silence on his bonding with the franchise. People have been keen to know about Sanju Samson's future with Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League (IPL) ever since the news about his split with the franchise surfaced. If a few media reports are to be believed, the wicketkeeper-batter from Kerala has expressed his desire to part ways with Rajasthan Royals, whereas Chennai Super Kings are willing to have him via an all-cash deal. Amid all the rumours and speculations, Samson broke his silence on his bonding with the Royals. In a conversation with Ravichandran Ashwin in the latter's YouTube podcast, 'Kutti Stories', the Kerala cricketer explained how his association with RR changed his life. 'RR has meant the world to me. A small child coming from a village in Kerala, wanting to show his talent. And then Rahul sir and Manoj Badale sir gave me a stage to get up and show the world what I am made of. That time, they trusted me throughout. The journey with RR has been really great, and I'm very grateful to have been in a franchise like that. It really means a lot to me," Sanju told Ashwin. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Please keep discussions respectful and constructive. Ashwin Quips on Generational Gap With Vaibhav Suryavanshi: ‘I Debuted 18 Years...'
Last Updated: Former India spinner Ashwin has joked about 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi's impressive IPL debut, stunning everyone with his shot-making skills. Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has joked about how when he made his Indian Premier League debut 18 years ago, teenage star Vaibhav Suryavanshi wasn't even in his parents' imagination, while speaking to Sanju Samson about the 14-year-old and his shot-making skills. Vaibhav was snapped up by the Rajasthan Royals for ₹1.1 crore at the IPL 2025 mega auction, becoming the youngest cricketer ever to earn an Indian Premier League contract. On his Indian Premier League debut, Vaibhav launched his very first delivery for a six and went on to score 34 off just 20 balls. 'When he hit the first ball for a six, I was like, 'That's cool…he lucked out'. But then he just went on and on and on. Wow! The quality of the shots he was hitting shocked me," Vaibhav's IPL captain, Sanju Samson, said while speaking on Ashwin's YouTube channel. 'Let me tell you a small story, after the Rajasthan vs Chennai match in Delhi, I was talking to Panish (Shetty, RR lead analyst). You also joined us and left. It isn't just about his (Vaibhav's) hitting," Ashwin replied. 'I bowled one to him round the stumps and he smacked it through the covers. The next ball, I bowled a slower one. You (Samson) have kept wickets for me for a long time and you know I do that to see if he would go for the big one," Ashwin said. 'I pulled it a bit wide and he (Vaibhav) just waited and gave it a solid shot and the ball went through mid-on for a single. I remember thinking, 'What the hell, man… Where has this guy come from?" Ashwin added. 'He (Vaibhav) was 14 and I made my IPL debut 18 years ago. He was not even in the imagination of his parents… That was quite crazy. I saw Jos Buttler talking to Jofra Archer about it. About how it was to get smashed around by a 14-year-old in the nets," Ashwin said. On April 28, 2025, Vaibhav blasted a hundred off just 35 deliveries, becoming the youngest centurion in Indian Premier League history and setting the record for the fastest century by an Indian in the tournament. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
