Iraq, Saudi Arabia discuss security risks after Israeli strikes on Iran

Baghdad ( – Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein and Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan held a phone conversation on Saturday to address escalating regional tensions following Israel's recent attacks on Iran. The Iraqi Foreign Ministry reported that both ministers reviewed the broader regional impact of the strikes and stressed the importance of enhancing diplomatic efforts around Iran's nuclear program, including the continuation of constructive dialogue. Iraq also participated in the UN Security Council meeting in New York held in response to Israel's strike on Iranian nuclear sites, which has raised alarm over Middle East stability and international peace. In addition, Iraq lodged an official complaint with the United Nations earlier in the week, denouncing Israel's use of Iraqi airspace to conduct military operations as a violation of national sovereignty and a serious threat to regional security.

Iraq reopens Al Qaim border crossing with Syria

Baghdad ( – Iraqi authorities announced that the Al Qaim border crossing with Syria has officially reopened to both travelers and commercial cargo, marking a significant step toward restoring bilateral ties and regional connectivity. Situated in Iraq's western Anbar province, approximately 400 kilometers from Baghdad, the Al Qaim crossing is one of the most important land gateways between the two neighboring countries. It had remained shut since December 2024 due to heightened security concerns in Syria. The reopening follows months of diplomatic recalibration after the collapse of the Bashar Al Assad administration, which had strained Baghdad-Damascus relations. Iraqi officials say the decision reflects a broader effort to normalize cross-border movement and stabilize trade and security cooperation in the region.

Iran-Israel attacks force shutdown of key Iraqi gas field

Shafaq News/ Kuwait Energy has suspended operations at Iraq's Siba gas field in response to the escalating conflict between Iran and Israel, a source at Basra Gas Company reported on Saturday. The shutdown order, issued to both Iraqi and foreign staff, halts all activity at the site, located east of Basra, which typically yields around 50 million cubic feet of gas and 1,200 barrels of liquefied gas daily. Basra Gas Company is set to meet with Kuwait Energy to clarify the reasons behind the decision. The suspension comes as Israel continues its large-scale airstrikes on Iranian nuclear and military targets. Tehran has retaliated with massive missile barrages, launching over 300 projectiles into Israeli territory.
