KSRTC's open-top double-decker elevates tourism experience
Industries Minister P Rajeeve flagged off the service in a function held at the Ernakulam Boat Jetty on Tuesday evening. The daily evening trips, designed to offer unparalleled panoramic views of the city's coastal front, promise to transform how visitors and locals alike experience the city's breathtaking vistas.
The refurbished bus has 39 seats in the upper deck and 24 seats in the lower deck. Tickets have been priced at Rs 300 per person for the open-top upper deck, to soak in the picturesque coastal scenery of Kochi from an elevated perspective. At the same time, those travelling in the lower deck will be charged only Rs 150 per person.
'There will be only a single trip in a day. The 'City Tour' will start daily from the Ernakulam KSRTC bus stand at 5pm and return to the stand by 8pm. The bus will ply 29km during the three-hour city tour,' said R Udayakumar, chief traffic officer of KSRTC Budget Tourism Cell.
The double-decker can also be rented out by tourists who arrive in groups or for small celebrations. 'The bus can be booked for operation at any time other than the slot for the daily trips for Rs 15,300. Advance booking can be done either through the corporation's online website or by contacting 9447223212."
As the double-decker cruises along key routes, passengers can enjoy and capture unforgettable moments of Kochi's iconic landmarks, bustling streets, and serene backwater fronts. The unique initiative by KSRTC's Budget Tourism Cell aims to replicate the success of similar 'City Tour' ventures in the state capital.

MU issues physical marks cards to graduates
Mangaluru: Mangalore University has fulfilled the long-pending demand for physical marks cards for candidates who graduated under the National Education Policy-2020, where marks cards were issued digitally. PL Dharma, vice-chancellor, and H Devendrappa, registrar (evaluation), said that after obtaining special permission from the higher education department and with the support of UT Khader, speaker of assembly, the university has met the demand for issuing physical marks cards. This announcement was made during the first general academic council meeting held on Friday. Dharma stated that marks cards were already sent to the respective colleges. A total of 13,517 marks cards for undergraduate students out of over 18,000 candidates were printed and issued. In the postgraduate section, a total of 1,637 marks cards were printed and issued. "Close to 5,000 undergraduate marks cards have not been issued due to errors in the data. We are trying to rectify this and issue them at the earliest. The data received from UUCMS contains errors," said Dharma, adding that the university is not charging for the issuance of mark cards. The issuance of physical marks cards will bring much-needed relief to graduates who faced inconvenience due to the digitally issued ones. Dharma mentioned that many graduates complained as they were unable to secure jobs or pursue higher education abroad. During the meeting, the revised syllabus of various courses, autonomous status for Mahatma Gandhi College, Udupi, revised sitting fees, travel allowances, and other allowances for syndicate members and officials were discussed. The cash-strapped university has increased the syndicate member sitting fee from Rs 5,000 to Rs 8,000. Internal probe under progress for Belapu Mangalore University allegedly diverted about Rs 8.5 crore funds sanctioned for the development of the PG centre in Belapu in Udupi district. Instead of utilising the funds for the project, the university used them for an international hostel and other activities, violating the govt order. Dharma said that an internal inquiry in this regard is in progress. One report has already been submitted. "We still need at least Rs 12 crore to complete the Belapu project and have already spent about Rs 38.3 crore. We have planned to start unique courses, including one related to marine and coastal security," he said.

Property tax notices issued despite GMC repeal, councillors stage protest
Ghaziabad: Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation (GMC) councillors on Friday staged a sit-in protest at the corporation's head office in Navyug Market over hiked property tax notices to residents, even though the "board repealed the proposal". The hiked property tax came into effect on April 1. GMC officials, meanwhile, said the process of issuing notices is "system-generated". "If anyone has deposited a hiked property tax, it will be adjusted to older tax slabs," the GMC officials said. But the protesters are not convinced. Councillor Manoj Goyal said, "The GMC board, which met on June 30, unanimously called for bringing the existing property tax — which was applicable before April — and the board passed the proposal, which meant GMC would not collect hiked property tax and would not issue notices to residents. However, the corporation has been issuing notices, which is a violation of the municipal act." " Meanwhile, GMC officials said there is another issue involved — a case has been filed in Allahabad high court against GMC's decision to impose an increased property tax and the court's decision is pending. "We are awaiting the court's decision and only after that can the system-generated billing system be updated as per old tax slab rates," a GMC official said. The property tax rates before April 1 were between Rs 0.32/sq foot on properties with less than 12m of road width, Rs 0.48 to Rs 2 for roads 12–24 metres wide and Rs 0.65 to Rs 2.41 for wider roads. The revised rate is between Rs 0.75/sq foot to Rs 4/sq foot. In March, the board passed the proposal to link tax with the DM circle rate. GMC calculates tax based on the annual rental value (ARV) of a property.
