‘The guilty won't be spared': Tripura Minister Kishor Barman sets up team to probe fake fee cards row in Govt college
'The issue was brought to the attention of the director and secretary of Higher Education. A team was formed to investigate the matter, and a report was sought. Anyone found guilty of fraudulent activities using fake fee cards will not be spared,' he told reporters during his first visit to Maharaja Bir Bikram University (MBBU) in Agartala on Wednesday after taking charge as Higher Education Minister.
The allegation was raised by a few students of Ramthakur College of Agartala in the West Tripura district, where fake fee cards were purportedly used during undergraduate admissions this year.
'After taking charge as Higher Education minister, I conducted a review meeting at the state level. After the meeting, a decision was taken to visit all the universities under the Higher Education Department or state government to assess their present situation, their facilities, their problems, and the progress of the universities regarding the implementation of the National Education Policy and the kind of infrastructure required to adhere to the norms,' Barman said.
Barman took stock of the infrastructure at the university and later interacted with the authorities and students of the MBB University, named after the state's last ruler, Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Debbarma. During the interaction, the students and faculty laid thrust on ways to improve the quality of the institute through state-of-the-art amenities.
The minister said that as part of strengthening the university, there are plans to bring additional colleges, which are presently under Tripura University (central university), under MBB University. The government will also implement the decisions taken in the budget to develop the institute, he said.
The minister said that he also plans to visit private academic institutions to assess whether better things can be implemented there.

Recalling Karunanidhi's initiatives for the uplift of the poor and society as a whole, he said: 'Carrying forward his legacy, our Dravidian Model government has implemented schemes such as the Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thittam, Naan Mudhalvan, Pudhumai Penn, Makkalai Thedi Maruthuvam, and Innuyir Kappom. Several States across the country have followed our initiative.'

‘Not prepared for fourth year': DU's push for 12-hour shifts at colleges sparks criticism
Amid the rollout of the fourth year undergraduate programme (FYUP) under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 from this academic session at Delhi University, the varsity's push for 12-hour shifts has drawn criticism from teachers and students. Expressing myriad concerns, faculty unions are demanding the university withdraw the advisory and hold wider consultations as the classes for the new session begin Monday. In a notification dated July 31 notification, the university asked colleges to extend their hours and operate from 8 am to 8 pm to 'ensure availability of faculty and staff during the period,' suggesting a staggered deployment to accommodate additional academic requirements. However, faculty representatives argue that this blanket approach ignores the realities on the ground. 'The order clearly shows that we are ill-prepared for the fourth year,' said Abha Dev Habib, Secretary of the Democratic Teachers' Front and Associate Professor at Miranda House. She added, 'Teaching distribution and timetables must be planned in advance during the vacation itself if classes are to begin smoothly. Pushing this on August 1, with classes beginning August 4, leaves teachers scrambling. It also means that first-year teaching is now pushed toward guest faculty, which is no way to welcome students to a university.' Safety is emerging as the biggest worry. Many DU campuses are located in areas where traveling at odd hours feels unsafe to students and staff. 'This latest DU notification is extremely problematic. It is extremely dangerous from the safety perspective of students and teachers in many areas of Delhi,' said Dr Mithuraaj Dhusiya, an elected member of DU's Executive Council. 'Making students sit from 8 am to 8 pm is neither feasible nor practical. It just shows that DU is not prepared for the fourth year of NEP — neither on infrastructure nor manpower.' Rudrashish Chakraborty, Associate Professor of English at Kirori Mal College and Delhi University Teachers' Association (DUTA) Executive member, called the measure 'anti-teacher and anti-student.' 'It forces colleges to adopt a draconian system. The notification expressly instructs colleges to prepare a staggered timetable of a minimum five hours per day for every teacher, even if there is no space for teachers to sit and work,' he said. Chakraborty also flagged the potential impact on evening colleges, which traditionally cater to students who work during the day. 'It is not clear how this will impact evening colleges. Are they going to schedule their classes from 8 pm to 8 am? Or are they going to be dismantled altogether as institutions?' Faculty members also warned of an emerging hierarchy under the new system. 'The university has said that only senior faculty should teach and supervise the fourth-year students. This is a vicious attempt to create a division between so-called senior and junior colleagues, which will undermine collegiality and disrupt teaching culture,' Chakraborty added. 'We cannot implement structural reforms like this through last-minute orders without preparation, safety measures, or teacher training,' said Habib. Although the strength of students was not as high on Friday when colleges held orientations, better attendance is expected on Monday, officials said.

First witness testifies against Sheikh Hasina in trial for 2024 Bangladesh protest violence
The first witness in the trial of Bangladesh's fugitive ex-prime minister Sheikh Hasina gave evidence on Sunday, a man shot in the face during protests that toppled her last year. (File Photo/AP) Hasina, 77, who has defied court orders to return from India to attend her trial on charges amounting to crimes against humanity, is accused of ordering a deadly crackdown in a failed bid to crush the student-led uprising. Up to 1,400 people were killed between July and August 2024, according to the United Nations. The first witness, among the 11 cases that the prosecution is expected to present to the court, was Khokon Chandra Barman, whose story reflects the violence of the protests. The 23-year-old wears a mask to conceal his face, which was ripped apart by gunshot during the culmination of the protests on August 5, 2024, the same day that Hasina fled Dhaka by helicopter. "I want justice for the ordeal I've been going through, and for my fellow protesters who sacrificed their lives," he told the court. Barman lost his left eye, while his right eye was damaged, as well as his lips, nose and teeth. A video showing Barman's blood-covered face was played in court, with the opening statements aired on the state-run broadcaster. Prosecutors have filed five charges against Hasina -- including failure to prevent mass murder -- which amount to crimes against humanity under Bangladeshi law. "Sheikh Hasina was the nucleus around whom all the crimes committed during the July-August uprising revolved," chief prosecutor Tajul Islam told the court on Sunday. Hasina is on trial in absentia alongside two other accused. One, her former interior minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, is also a fugitive. The other, Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, the former inspector general of police, is in custody. He has pleaded guilty. Attorney General Md Asaduzzaman said he wanted a "fair trial", speaking to reporters outside the court. "People were killed and maimed -- we demand the highest punishment for the crimes committed," Asaduzzaman said. Amir Hossain, the state-appointed lawyer for Hasina, noted that Barman was shot during the chaotic final day of the weeks-long protests. He pointed out that several police officers were also killed in clashes with protesters and it was "unclear who actually shot Barman". Hossain said he was not in contact with Hasina, who has refused to accept the authority of the court. The trial continues.
